Global Hip-Hop Icons Tip “T.I.” Harris & Nasty C Feature In PRESS RELEASE GLOBAL HIP-HOP ICONS TIP “T.I.” HARRIS & NASTY C FEATURE IN EXCLUSIVE KEYNOTE CONVERSATION AT MIDEM DIGITAL EDITION T.I. and Nasty C Paris, 22 May 2020 – Midem, home of the global music community, today announces that global hip-hop giants, T.I. and Nasty C, will feature in Midem Digital Edition, delivering a keynote conversation on 3rd June 2020 An Exclusive Keynote Conversation Between Hip-hop Icons In this exclusive and unique online conversation, T.I. and Nasty C will discuss their creative relationship as an illustrative example of the global nature of hip-hop today. The two giants of their genre will explore the significance of U.S hip-hop artists supporting and collaborating with other major hip-hop artists around the world. The keynote will be also the occasion to debate how brands could step up and do for hip-hop, and music in general, what they have always done for sports, given music has just as much global and universal reach and appeal as sport, just without the equivalent of an Olympics as a branding platform. Midem Director, Alexandre Deniot, welcomes this addition to the Midem Digital Edition programme, saying, “We’re delighted to have the chance to welcome stars like T.I. and Nasty C to our event. Insights into their collaborative creative process will be invaluable to our community, especially the emerging artists joining us, who will surely be inspired by this session. It’s vital for us all right now to be sharing best practices and any other tips that can nurture the careers of those entering the industry. Exploring the value of collaborations between hip-hop and brands will also be hugely inspiring to both the artist and brand communities, especially as a reflection of how these partnerships can cross continental borders, building relationships between the world’s high potential, growing markets.” The Speakers Tip “T.I.” Harris led the explosion of southern hip hop music and, specifically, trap, to a mainstream breakthrough with trailblazing album, Trap Muzik, released 15 years ago. With millions of albums sold and more than 35 million singles, T.I. has been awarded 3 Grammy Awards, 11 Billboard Awards, 3 BET Awards, 2 American Music Awards and more through the years. He is the visionary and creator of the first ever pop•up Trap Music Museum, which chronicles and celebrates the contributions of Trap music. He is looking forward to this conversation, saying, “Although I was looking forward to giving the keynote speech in Cannes this year, I’m glad Nasty C and I have the opportunity to participate at Midem virtually. Join us as we discuss why hip-hop has no borders and how brands and artists can work together on a global scale.” Nasty C is a multi-award winning South African rapper from Durban, dubbed “The Coolest Kid In Africa.” Recently signed to Def Jam Records in a joint venture with Universal Music Africa, he is gearing up for the release of his third album, Zulu Man With Some Power. This hitmaker has been the most streamed South African artist on Apple Music for four years in a row. He says, "Growing up in Durban, South Africa, hip-hop wasn’t the popular music played in my township. But I dreamed of making it. T.I. had such a major influence on me. From first hearing him on a school bus to now joining him on stage at Midem is evidence that hip-hop has no boundaries, no borders. The culture is a global phenomenon and I’m excited about our discussion." • Trap Spaces, Trap Music: Harriet Jacobs, Fetty Wap, and Emancipation As Entrapment
Trap Spaces, Trap Music: Harriet Jacobs, Fetty Wap, and Emancipation as Entrapment SEAN M. KENNEDY Set in a New York City trap house—an apartment that serves as the hub for an outlaw drug business—Fetty Wap’s 2014 song and video “Trap Queen” depicts the stacks of U.S. currency and the manufacture of product that are core aspects of the genre of trap music. But the song and video also portray an outlier to this strategic essentialism: namely, the loving romance at its center which challenges the mainstream common sense of the misogyny of rap. Likewise, the sonics of “Trap Queen”—upbeat, even joyful—contrast with the aural hardness of much of the genre. In these ways, “Trap Queen” is an important pop-cultural political intervention against both the enduring pathologizing of Black life and the sense of siege with which many Black people, especially poor ones, are perceived to live.1 But while Fetty Wap’s persona in “Trap Queen” can be understood as a homo- economicus figure (Wynter 123) of the informal economy—a breadwinner who can self-determine his own life, albeit within the narrow bounds of criminalized enterprise—that burdened self-possession is doubled for his female partner presented as a woman who will happily do anything for her “man,” from cooking crack to giving him a lap dance (see Figure 1). These labors are shown to be uncoerced. Nevertheless, the larger structures of the racial-capitalist formal economy essentially force many Black women into such gendered survival labor. Indeed, the situation of these women, which Fetty Wap’s “trap queen” only partially evokes, illustrates the thinness of freedom under liberal democracy of which emancipation from slavery is considered paradigmatic.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • Journal of Religion & Society
ISSN 1522-5668 Journal of Religion & Society The Kripke Center Volume 14 (2012) A Religious Hustle T.I. and Jay-Z’s Lyrical Narratives from “the Trap” to the Spiritual Sharon Lauricella and Samuel Kyereme, University of Ontario Institute of Technology Abstract The coexistence of the religious (or “holy”) and the secular (the “profane”) has been identified and celebrated in the context of hip hop and rap music; references to prayer and spirituality are present, while the “hustler” and “gangster” stereotype is simultaneously referenced and played out in this popular genre. This paper considers T.I. and Jay-Z as two different manifestations of the holy and profane in rap music. While both rappers identify with the concept of divinity in their work, their approach to the coexistence of the holy and profane is different. T.I. promotes worship of a Christian God, while Jay-Z wants to be worshipped as a human incarnation of the holy in rap. This analysis offers the first scholarly analysis of T.I.’s contribution to rap and religion, and suggests that Jay-Z’s self-appointment as the “God” of rap is an alternative construct of the traditional holy and profane identification in rap music. Introduction God give new beginnings, you can start right now (T.I., A Better Day, 2008). One of the nuances in hip hop – and also in Motown, blues, and music brought to North America from West Africa – is that the sacred and secular are not mutually exclusive. Reed shows that in rap and hip hop music, and also in other traditionally Black music genres, the “profane” (that is, the secular) can and does coexist with the “holy” (or, references to God or the Divine).

Dr. Susan Jasko was my advisor at California University of Pennsylvania since 2005 and encouraged me to stay in the Honors Program. Dr. Drew McGukin had the initiative to bring me to the Honors Program in the first place. Very few DJs can jump from club sets to high-profile festival performances, to Kanye West’s larger- than-life stadium shows with ease. In today’s DJ culture, A-Trak holds a truly unique place. He and partner Nick Catchdubs founded America’s most trendsetting new label, Fool’s Gold, launching the careers of artists such as Kid Sister and Kid Cudi. Fool’s Gold’s mission to merge all aspects of club music was already outlined in Trizzy’s original mixtape manifesto, Dirty South Dance, which set the tone for his own production. He is now one of the most sought-after remixers in electronic music, and his remixes for the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Boys Noize have become undeniable mainstays in DJ sets the world over. 2009 saw the release of two critically acclaimed DJ mixes, Infinity +1 and Fabriclive 45, as well as the birth of Duck Sauce, his collaboration with Armand Van Helden. The duo’s radio smash “aNYway” cemented itself as the dance anthem of the year, A-Trak’s first true chart- topper with two videos in international rotation and across-the-board support from Pete Tong to Busy P, David Guetta to 2manydjs. Duck Sauce’s 2010 follow up “Barbra Streisand” was even bigger, a whistling pop sensation that accumulated over 60 million YouTube views of its star-studded video while hitting platinum heights around the globe. They even covered it on X-Factor and Glee! Not bad for a kid whom many viewed as a 90’s turntablism prodigy.
