RESUMO Essa tese tem por objetivo investigar a biografia e os processos de produção, circulação, usos e apropriações dos bustos raciais, objetos tridimensionais, produzidos em gesso e papel machê, com a finalidade de representar as múltiplas raças humanas de modo hierarquizado, estereotipado e homogenizante. No século XIX recrudesceram os interesses na educação escolar, onde países que visavam se tornarem modernos investiam em novas tecnologias educacionais, divulgadas em eventos de proporções internacionais como as Exposições Universais. Os bustos raciais foram, na época, objetos que revolucionaram a maneira de ensinar sobre as raças humanas e, a partir de 1862 foram amplamente divulgados nos eventos internacionais. As instituições que serão analisadas, por possuírem em seus acervos os bustos raciais são: Centro de Memória Institucional do Instituto Superior de Educação (CEMI-ISERJ), do Memorial do Colégio Marista Arquidiocesano de São Paulo, Museu Metodista de Educação Bispo Isac Aço (MMEBIA), Museu Pedagógico José Pedro Varela e Museu e Arquivo Histórico La Salle (MAHLS). A análise dessas três etapas se justifica devido à sua produção conter diversificadas intencionalidades, por possuir circuitos de permuta e comercialização delineáveis, além de seus usos e apropriações serem presumíves, no entanto mutáveis. Para isso, pesquisei a documentação das próprias instituições possuidoras desses acervos raciais, além de ter investigado na rede mundial de computadores sobre as empresas produtoras e quem foram os compradores, sobre a circulação dessas peças e sobre os usos e apropriações destinados a elas. A tese visa responder como funcionou o circuito social/biográfico das imagens- artefato, os bustos raciais, desde sua produção, circulação, consumo e significação no cenário educativo brasileiro entre os séculos XIX e XX. ABSTRACT This thesis aims to investigate the biography and the processes of production, circulation, uses and appropriations of racial busts, three-dimensional objects, produced in plaster and papier-mache, with the purpose of representing the multiple human races in a hierarchical, stereotyped and homogenizing way. In the 19th century, interest in school education increased, where countries that aimed to become modern invested in new educational technologies, disseminated in events of international proportions such as Universal Expositions. Racial busts were, at the time, objects that revolutionized the way of teaching about human races and, starting in 1862, were widely publicized in international events. The institutions that will be analyzed, for having racial busts in their collections are: Centro de Memória Institucional do Instituto Superior de Educação (CEMI-ISERJ), Memorial do Colégio Marista Arquidiocesano de São Paulo, Museu Metodista de Educação Bispo Isac Aço (MMEBIA), Museu Pedagógico José Pedro Varela e Museu and Arquivo Histórico La Salle (MAHLS). The analysis of these three stages is justified due to the fact that their production contains diversified intentionalities, as it has delineated exchange and commercialization circuits, in addition to its uses and appropriations being presumable, however changeable. For this, I researched the documentation of the institutions that own these racial collections, in addition to investigating on the world wide web about the production companies and who were the buyers, about the circulation of these pieces and about the uses and appropriations intended for them. The thesis aims to answer how the social / biographical circuit of the artifact images, racial busts, worked, since their production, circulation, consumption and meaning in the Brazilian educational scenario between the 19th and 20th centuries. I had forgotten them for thirty years! It seemed to me, after reading them again, that they give a small glimpse of the life we lived at the time. I could not have believed that two years after this simple account of our world - of the French of Indochina - would collapse on 9 March 1945.2 1 Madame Beaucarnot deposited a typewritten transcription of her diary with Yvonne Fontain-Biggi, a friend who wanted to collect memoirs of time spent in Indochina. In turn, Ms. Fontain-Biggi deposited these papers at the Archives Nationales, Section Outre-Mer, in Aix-en-Provence. The diary is held at code 67 APOM, d. 2. “Fonds Biggi” The Lycée Albert Sarraut, in Hanoi, was the elite high school for northern Indochina.
