Introduction This Implementation Plan sets out how we will work towards our priorities including economic growth, improving the environment and social inclusion by building on Rochdale’s planned and current transport projects, many of which are set out in the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 5-Year Delivery Plan (2020-2025). Lancashire Hot­Pot: Walsden & Todmorden Duration: 1½ Hours Walsden Cricket Club and Todmorden Cricket Club are located just inside the western boundary of Calderdale, but both play in Lancashire­based competitions: WCC in the Central Lancashire League and TCC in the Lancashire League. This walk takes you from ground to ground – from Scott Street to Centre Vale – and takes in much more besides. Leave your vehicle in Riggs Garden Centre car park, Rochdale Road, Walsden. Have a look round the giant store and then cross over the main road to visit the gift shop and café. Watch some play at Walsden cricket ground, just a few hundred yards up the road in the direction of Walsden itself. The history of WCC is dominated by Frank Scott – hence Scott Street (the name of the ground) and Scott House (one of the nearby blocks of flats). When you leave the ground re­join the main road, go over the railway bridge, but locate the short private road to the right of the last house on the opposite side of the road. Go down the path, ensure you close the gate at the end; go right and then drop down left onto the towpath of the Rochdale Canal. Head towards the church spire you see in the distance – in the direction of the centre of Walsden. The WCC logo Sauntering down the towpath, you will encounter joggers, walkers and fishing enthusiasts (look out for the Todmorden Angling Society plaque on your left). If you’re thirsty or hungry, you’ll be glad to know that the Cross Keys pub will soon appear on your left – feel free to pop in for a drink or a bite to eat! You’ll also spot a small stream on your left that starts to run parallel to the canal.

    How do I get PENNINE there and back? You can reach both ends of the Pennine Bridleway, and many places in between, by public transport. The BRIDLEWAY nearest rail station to Middleton Top, at the southern end of the trail, is Cromford. It is on the Derwent Valley line between Derby and Matlock. NATIONAL TRAIL Horse riders are advised to start at Hartington Station on the Tissington Trail. At the northern end the trail ends in Ravenstonedale, though there is an alternative link to the nearest train station in Kirkby Stephen, approximately 6km away, which is on the Settle to Carlisle line. How hard is it? The route runs through the Pennines so expect hills and changeable weather! The Trail is well maintained and signposted and provides an amazing long distance route through classic Pennine scenery with miles of off road tracks, safe road and river crossings, and no stiles or steps to negotiate. But don’t underestimate those Pennine hills; there are steep climbs, exhilarating descents and some challenging terrain. However, at the southern end the trail follows disused railway lines and provides an easily accessible route for all the family. Horse riders and walkers could expect to cover around A trail for all seasons 15 miles a day, cyclists as much as 30. Summer is the most popular time to enjoy the Pennine Bridleway, when the weather is more reliable and the days are long. From mid August the heather comes into flower, creating a purple blanket over the moors.
