  • Reflections on the City–United Dynamic in and Around Manchester David Hand
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by E-space: Manchester Metropolitan University's Research Repository 12 Love thy neighbour or a Red rag to a Blue? Reflections on the City–United dynamic in and around Manchester David Hand I love Manchester United, they are great – I know because I watch them on Sky TV all the time. I once drove past Manchester on my way to a wedding … but I didn’t have time to get to a match … I love getting together with all my Man United supporter friends here in London to watch old videos of Bobby Charlton and George Best … I love all of Man United’s strips and I have bought them all for sitting in front of the telly … I once met a couple of blokes from Manchester but they supported a team called City … it’s unheard of someone from London would support City. I can’t understand why anyone would support a team that hasn’t won anything in years. Some people support a team just because they were born there – they must be mad! (MCIVTA, 2002) Any comprehensive coverage of the United phenomenon must eventually emulate the spoof Internet posting above and consider Manchester City. To an extent, the experience of City’s supporters in particular is defined (and lived) differentially in relation to what has latterly become the domineering presence of the United Other. The City–United dynamic is, therefore, a highly significant football and, indeed, social issue in Greater Manchester.

On a smaller scale, many football clubs and rugby clubs play in new stadia often located away from Sports stadia are familiar landmarks to all sports their traditional heartlands, or in stadia that have seen spectators, both the armchair and the more active major expansion and adaptation. These changes have varieties. That’s 46 years of incredible loyalty. In fact he’s only missed one friendly and that was through no fault of his own. An air traffic control strike prevented him from boarding a flight to Toronto – he had a match ticket and a flight ticket. Brian Clough lasted 44 days. Jock Stein lasted 44 days. Another 19 managers have come and gone (20 if you include Eddie Gray twice – although he’s far from gone, given his role as commentator on Yorkshire Radio with the brilliant Thom Kirwin, hospitality stuff and complete and utter devotion to Leeds United) and Brian McDermott is the latest man to depart Elland Road.

Turkish Journal of Computer and Mathematics Education Vol.12 No.3(2021), 4465-4472 Research Article ArticleResearch Article Influx of money and the Manchester City Success Story Ajinkya Kelkar (Symbiosis Institute of Business Management) Article History: Received: 10 November 2020; Revised 12 January 2021 Accepted: 27 January 2021; Published online: 5 April 2021 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: The Premier League in the 21st century has been the most popular league in football history. Known for its jaw dropping matches and unpredictability, the teams in this league are quickly establishing themselves as some of Europe’s finest football teams. One such team is Manchester City. In 2008 Man City’s fortune was overturned when the Abu Dhabi United Group decided to purchase Manchester city under its subsidiary City Football group. The new investors provided city with much needed financial backing because of which they were able to improve their training centre, grounds and medical facilities and It also enabled them tobuy young and established talent. In this study we will attempt to establish a relationship between the money invested by City Football Group in Manchester City and try to relate it to City’s success over the last couple of years Keywords: Manchester city, Money , Expenditure, Premier League, Football ___________________________________________________________________________ 1. Introduction Manchester city weren’t always the high pressing, technical passing and high goalscoring team like they have been for the past few years. In fact, in the 2000 – 2001 the Manchester city team under Kevin Keegan saw some pretty dark days. They finished 18th on the premier league table which meant relegation to the first division. After a hard-fought battle in the first division city managed to return back to the premier league within the year.
