They were in fact Everton FC’s biggest rivals. Bootle were the first team to win the Liverpool Senior Cup competition and narrowly missed out on becoming a founder member of the football league, to Everton. In 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the new Football Alliance, which soon became the second division (now the championship!). That season was the most successful as we finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where we lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after one season and seemingly disappeared due to financial problems. Bootle FC’s place in the football league was taken by Liverpool FC. Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic. was later formed with the new team initially playing in the Liverpool Leagues. In 1948 the club moved to nearby Bootle Stadium and were elected to the Lancashire Combination 2, which was won at the first attempt. However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew and folded during the 1953–54 campaign. In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton and played in the local leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination (which we won on numerous occasions) the club reverted back to it’s It’s better known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973; and a year later joined the Lancashire Combination, which we won in 1976 and 1977. Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in our first season, and we were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when we unfortunately dropped into the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination as Bucks Park was consigned to history. In 2006 the club, with a new ground, were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship. In 2009/10, our first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a NWCFL highest placing of 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012. 2013 saw Bootle come so close to promotion, narrowly missing out with three games to go, and eventually finishing 3rd again. However they put that disappointment aside to win the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first time in 124 years. 25 Hello to all supporters players committee of both Bootle FC and our visitors Everton and welcome all to the Delta taxis stadium. The Senior Cup is a special competition for the reason of games like this. I was lucky enough to be part of the Bootle Squad that played Everton a few years ago and it is a great MATCHDAY PRICES occasion for our club. 1ST TEAM: £5 ADULTS This is an occasion that a number of our players will savour, especially our younger lads who haven’t experienced a game £2 CONCESSIONS like this before, so it will be a good test of their character. It was good to get back to winning ways on Saturday and overall I was pleased with UNDER 16’S FREE the performance, at St Helens. We controlled the game for long periods and looked solid in defence and midfield. We just lacked that bit of creativity in the final third and the ball wasn't sticking up top in the first half. So we made a change just after half time and things began to click. The most disappointing aspect of the afternoon was to concede and not keep a clean sheet. Centre forwards defending in their own penalty box don’t go well together but at the end of the day, getting three points is the main thing. I was impressed with young Chris Lowe again on Saturday. He is only 17 and is FREE ENTRY FOR ALL currently playing out of position at right-back, and he did really well. It’s not easy playing in the North West Counties at 17 but he has coped brilliantly. We would love a chance to retain the RESERVE & YOUTH GAMES: cup we won earlier this season and I’m sure we will give Everton a good LEAGUE GAMES: £1 ENTRY game tonight and hopefully the right SELECTED GAMES FREE ENTRY result. Reflections on the City–United dynamic in and around Manchester David Hand I love Manchester United, they are great – I know because I watch them on Sky TV all the time. I once drove past Manchester on my way to a wedding … but I didn’t have time to get to a match … I love getting together with all my Man United supporter friends here in London to watch old videos of Bobby Charlton and George Best … I love all of Man United’s strips and I have bought them all for sitting in front of the telly … I once met a couple of blokes from Manchester but they supported a team called City … it’s unheard of someone from London would support City. I can’t understand why anyone would support a team that hasn’t won anything in years. Some people support a team just because they were born there – they must be mad! (MCIVTA, 2002) Any comprehensive coverage of the United phenomenon must eventually emulate the spoof Internet posting above and consider Manchester City. To an extent, the experience of City’s supporters in particular is defined (and lived) differentially in relation to what has latterly become the domineering presence of the United Other. The City–United dynamic is, therefore, a highly significant football and, indeed, social issue in Greater Manchester.

  • Global Game, Local Identity: the Social Production of Football Space in Liverpool
GLOBAL GAME, LOCAL IDENTITY: THE SOCIAL PRODUCTION OF FOOTBALL SPACE IN LIVERPOOL DANIEL EVANS A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO August, 2014 © Daniel Evans, 2014 ii Abstract Based on participant observation of matches and interviews with key informants in Liverpool, UK, this thesis sets out the situation of the globalized English Premier League and its consequences for football (soccer) fandom in Liverpool. I am looking at both the reliance on and resistance to a tourist based consumption of the game. Using a Lefebvrian theoretical framework I analyze how football space is created in Liverpool and how the supporters’ groups of different teams in the city work to both globalize and glocalize the football culture of the city, and are looking to reshape their relationship with football’s current economic and cultural space. As Liverpool increasingly relies on a tourist-based economy with sport as its focus, it is altering the relationship between supporters and their clubs, and with other fans. The monitoring of fan performances by both authorities and other fans can be considered through Foucauldian conceptions of power to continuously shift the dynamics between different groups of supporters. iii Acknowledgements As I spend much of this thesis discussing the formation of social groups and the importance of community, I must acknowledge the many people that helped me in the creation of this work. First, my informants, who helped me understand the football world in Liverpool: Paul Gallagher, Jay McKenna, John Bennett, Andrew Sherlock, Ros Merkin, James Benson, Mike Humphries, Chris Stirrup, Feargal McAvoy, and Steve Kelley.
