They were in fact Everton FC’s biggest rivals. Bootle were the first team to win the Senior Cup competition and narrowly missed out on becoming a founder member of the football league, to Everton.

In 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the new Football Alliance, which soon became the second division (now the championship!). That season was the most successful as we finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where we lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after one season and seemingly disappeared due to financial problems. Bootle FC’s place in the football league was taken by Liverpool FC.

Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic. was later formed with the new team initially playing in the Liverpool Leagues. In 1948 the club moved to nearby Bootle Stadium and were elected to the Lancashire Combination 2, which was won at the first attempt. However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew and folded during the 1953–54 campaign.

In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton and played in the local leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination (which we won on numerous occasions) the club reverted back to it’s It’s better known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973; and a year later joined the Lancashire Combination, which we won in 1976 and 1977. Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in our first season, and we were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when we unfortunately dropped into the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination as Bucks Park was consigned to history. In 2006 the club, with a new ground, were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship. In 2009/10, our first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a NWCFL highest placing of 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012.

2013 saw Bootle come so close to promotion, narrowly missing out with three games to go, and eventually finishing 3rd again. However they put that disappointment aside to win the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first time in 124 years. 25 Hello to all supporters players committee of both Bootle FC and our visitors Everton and welcome all to the Delta taxis stadium.

The Senior Cup is a special competition for the reason of games like this. I was lucky enough to be part of the Bootle Squad that played Everton a few years ago and it is a great MATCHDAY PRICES occasion for our club. 1ST TEAM: £5 ADULTS This is an occasion that a number of our players will savour, especially our younger lads who haven’t experienced a game £2 CONCESSIONS like this before, so it will be a good test of their character. It was good to get back to winning ways on Saturday and overall I was pleased with UNDER 16’S FREE the performance, at St Helens. We controlled the game for long periods and looked solid in defence and midfield.

We just lacked that bit of creativity in the final third and the ball wasn't sticking up top in the first half. So we made a change just after half time and things began to click. The most disappointing aspect of the afternoon was to concede and not keep a clean sheet. Centre forwards defending in their own penalty box don’t go well together but at the end of the day, getting three points is the main thing.

I was impressed with young Chris Lowe again on Saturday. He is only 17 and is FREE ENTRY FOR ALL currently playing out of position at right-back, and he did really well. It’s not easy playing in the North West Counties at 17 but he has coped brilliantly.

We would love a chance to retain the RESERVE & YOUTH GAMES: cup we won earlier this season and I’m sure we will give Everton a good LEAGUE GAMES: £1 ENTRY game tonight and hopefully the right SELECTED GAMES FREE ENTRY result. Please show your support - the players and I are extremely grateful of Joseph WWW.BOOTLEFC.CO.UK it. Thanks Joe Doran BUCKS 5IVES 5 A-SIDE AND 7 A-SIDE TOP GRADE 3G PITCHES FOR HIRE

BOOTLE FOOTBALL CLUB

BAR & FUNCTION ROOM FOR HIRE ANY OCCASION CONTACT LENA ON 07928994441 6 23 Bootle are gearing up for a big night at the Delta Taxis Stadium, hosting Everton in the semi-final of the Liverpool Senior Cup. The Bucks are hoping that the game will attract the same level of interest as a tie at the same stage of the competition back in February 2010.

On that occasion, a club record crowd saw a young Everton reserve side win 4-2, and among the Everton side were three players - Hope Akpan, James McCarten and Luke Garbutt – who had all been on the bench for Everton's Europa League tie with Bate Borisov at the previous December.

The trio featured in that game when then Toffees manager fielded an inexperienced side, as Everton were already guaranteed a place in the last 32 of the competition.

This time around, the team that Everton field is likely to once again offer a tough challenge to Bootle, but manager Joe Doran insists that everyone at the club is really looking forward to the game. “It's great to draw them again”, he said. “The first time we played them we got our record attendance at the new ground (Delta Taxis Stadium) of 1078.

"That game was originally arranged for November, and was eventually played in February, and we had sold about 500 tickets in advance, so we knew we were in for a good crowd then and it was a really good event. It helped to put us on the map a bit with the local community. We don't have big advertising budgets or anything like that, so a lot of the locals didn't really know about us or know that we had a new ground at the time. We got a lot of exposure in the Liverpool Echo and on local radio, and that helped us a lot”.

As far as the game itself is concerned, Joe believes that the team’s success in last year’s competition will give them an extra incentive on Monday night. "Normally I would say that drawing Everton, or Liverpool or Tranmere, maybe Southport too, would be like a cup final for us. But we are holders of the Liverpool Senior Cup, so I've got to keep the lads focused on winning the game, because there's no reason why we can't win it. It's 11 v 11 at the end of the day. Obviously they will have a good side with a lot of quality, but if we can maximise all the opportunities we get, there is no reason why we can't win,I went to watch them in the earlier round against Marine, and although they were saying it was their youth team, if that was right then their 18 year olds are a lot bigger and stronger than you would expect.

"So I think they fielded a mixture of youth team players and Under 21 players. As it happened, their under 21s were playing at Southport on Monday night so we went and watched them as I’d expect some of those players to feature.

The game will be played to a finish on the night, and there will be no extra time if the teams are tied after 90 minutes, it will go straight to penalties. 7 EVERTON & NEXT UP AT HOME BOOTLE FOR THE BUCKS A HISTORY GLOSSOP NORTH END The present Derby Games are contested between Everton and their close neighbours Liverpool. Everton Football Club, founded in 1878, can trace its roots back to a Methodist chapel dedicated to St Domingo that once stood in the north end of Liverpool. Ben Chambers, at that time, ministered the chapel. Nevertheless, amongst the local congregation was a certain Thomas Evans, a For the Hillsborough Families Support group & The well-experienced football player who had learnt to play the association game back in his native Derbyshire. British Heart Foundation Tom Evans, under the watchful eye of the church elders, would have likely organized a series of impromptu soccer matches amongst the younger members of the congregation on a piece of land, laid out for public recreation, named Stanley Park. One year later the players severed their eccliasitacal roots and found new headquarters at the Queens Hotel in the district of Everton to which they changed their name. They continued to play their home matches on Stanley Park and, it was at this location, that they first played host to a team of players from St Johns, church in Bootle. Their curate, Alfred Keely, led the visitors.

The Reverend Keely had arrived in Bootle in spring of 1877 and, unlike his St Domingo counterpart, was well a versed in the game of . He had been born in Nottingham where, from as early as 1874, he is reported to be playing association football in the local newspapers. Alfred Keely won a place at Cambridge University were he played association football along with his friend William Chapman. Both men, on completing their MATCH studies, chose a living within the Church of England and were posted to churches on Merseyside. Alfred Keely was sent to St Johns parish on Brasenose Road, Bootle and immediately set about organising a football side from amongst the younger CENTRE members of his congregation.

The first recorded game between Everton and St Johns, took place on the 10th February 1880, at Stanley Park. The Everton side appeared to be made up of local players that were strengthened by one or two friends of Tom Evans. The make up of the Bootle side however, was completely different. The team included Alfred Keely along with his two brothers Erasmus and Edwin plus his friend William Chapman. The side also contained two local brothers by the name of Albert and Charles Allsop.

The style of play produced by Bootle St Johns proved far superior to that of Everton and, with a brace of goals from Edwin Keeley, they won the game 2 goals to 0. The sides met again, at the same venue, two weeks later and Bootle St Johns again proved superior by winning the game by 4 goals to nothing. Their next encounter took place, 1st march 1881, on Stanley Park.

Alfred Keely, through weight of his ecclesiastical duties, was forced to hand over the reins to Robert Sloane an experienced football player from Glasgow. The name St Johns was dropped from the title and the side became known simply as Bootle.

The meeting of the two clubs was now beginning to capture the interest of the indigenous population and over 500 of them gathered around the open playing area when, 14th January 1882, the two sides next met on Marsh Lane, Bootle. They were several new faces in the Everton line up while their opponents, apart from Sloane and Albert Allsop, were now made up of former local public school men and it was one such player, Harold Baxter, who gave Bootle an early lead. The rest of the game however, belonged to Jack McGill who, with two goals each side of the interval, gave Everton a 4-1 victory. Bootle now lost the services of their founder, Alfred Keely.

The Reverend Gentleman was assigned another parish in Wimbledon and his departure prompted an exodus of all the public school players from Bootle. Everton had their application firmly” on the table”. Victory, in the forthcoming cup-tie was vital for both clubs, as it would strengthen their claim to represent Merseyside UP THE BUCKS!! in the new venture.

However, it was Everton and not Bootle who were selected to become founder members of the new Football League.

The decision was a blow to the Bootle executive who though their claim to be included was just a strong as that of their neighbours. Nevertheless; there was no other town in England who had more than one team included amongst the twelve founder members. The Football League games now became the main attraction in Liverpool and large crowds became a regular feature on the Everton ground at Anfield. Jonny Holt decided his ambitions were best served by a move to the Football League and he left Bootle to join an Everton side that was also strengthened by the signing of Edgar Chadwick from Blackburn. Bootle, in order to protect their future, joined a combination that had been formed by the leading clubs who had been left outside the new Football League.

1010 19 A look back to 2010

One of the performances of the season saw Merseyrail Bootle come out 6-0 winners against Maghull Ladies

The last time these two teams met was only two weeks ago and on that occasion Merseyrail Bootle were not at their best and slumped to a 4-2 defeat, however due to Tranmere Rovers participating in the cup final, what was meant to be Merseyrail Bootle’s free weekend got rearranged for an away trip to Maghull, meaning Bootle could try and put their defeat behind them and get one back on Maghull.

With a smaller team of just 13 on Sunday 16th March, Merseyrail Bootle would have to work hard to get all three points but from kick off you could see Bootle Ladies were focused on the win.

Merseyrail Bootle kicked off the game and straight away set a high speed tempo with 1 and 2 touch football allowing them to take a few earlier opportunities which narrowly missed.

However once the girls got into their stride the goals started to flow. Siobhan Cliff was instrumental in all six goals, scoring two and creating the other four to get player of the match. As well as Cliff, on the score sheet was also Rachel Atherton, Leanne Cunningham, Georgia Mills and Isobelle Fitzsimons.
