Global Game, Local Identity: the Social Production of Football Space in Liverpool
GLOBAL GAME, LOCAL IDENTITY: THE SOCIAL PRODUCTION OF FOOTBALL SPACE IN LIVERPOOL DANIEL EVANS A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO August, 2014 © Daniel Evans, 2014 ii Abstract Based on participant observation of matches and interviews with key informants in Liverpool, UK, this thesis sets out the situation of the globalized English Premier League and its consequences for football (soccer) fandom in Liverpool. I am looking at both the reliance on and resistance to a tourist based consumption of the game. Using a Lefebvrian theoretical framework I analyze how football space is created in Liverpool and how the supporters’ groups of different teams in the city work to both globalize and glocalize the football culture of the city, and are looking to reshape their relationship with football’s current economic and cultural space. As Liverpool increasingly relies on a tourist-based economy with sport as its focus, it is altering the relationship between supporters and their clubs, and with other fans. The monitoring of fan performances by both authorities and other fans can be considered through Foucauldian conceptions of power to continuously shift the dynamics between different groups of supporters. iii Acknowledgements As I spend much of this thesis discussing the formation of social groups and the importance of community, I must acknowledge the many people that helped me in the creation of this work. First, my informants, who helped me understand the football world in Liverpool: Paul Gallagher, Jay McKenna, John Bennett, Andrew Sherlock, Ros Merkin, James Benson, Mike Humphries, Chris Stirrup, Feargal McAvoy, and Steve Kelley. -

Success and Progression of Home-Grown Players in English Professional Football
Football Labour Migration: An Analysis Of Trends and Experiences of Northern Irish Players Christopher A. Elliott A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfilment Of The Requirements Of Liverpool John Moores University For The Degree Of Master Of Philosophy June 2017 Acknowledgements I would like to thank my Director of Studies Dr Martin Littlewood for his guidance and support throughout the production of this major project in fulfilment of Master of Philosophy (MPhil). Without your continued support and encouragement this major project would not have been a possibility and for this I am extremely grateful. I would also like to thank my wife Claire for her support and motivation throughout the completion of the thesis. Without your love, support and assistance this thesis would never have been a possibility. I would like to also thank Lynda Gallogly for her assistance; this was greatly appreciated and I am extremely grateful for all your help. In memory of Samuel Douglas Beacom 2 Abstract Rationale – Academic literature regarding football (and labour migration) to date has examined factors that influence migration trends and explanations as to why players potentially migrate (see Magee & Sugden, 2002; Elliott & Weedon, 2011). Whilst others (see Maguire & Pearton, 2000a; Elliott & Weedon, 2011) have examined player acquisition trends of clubs at specific time periods. However, there is a lack of research examining player acquisition trends over a longitudinal period thus prompting the current research and the perceived implications for indigenous home- grown players (and specifically Northern Ireland players). Study 1: Method / Results – A categorical database was created using both Excel (utilised for descriptive statistics) and the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS V.22; utilised for coding and refining of data) which enabled the efficient management and analysis of data (5072 players). -

Praise for Jeff Goulding’s Books Red Odyssey: Liverpool FC 1892–2017 ‘This eminently readable and beguiling addition to the Liverpool FC story should adorn every Red’s bookshelf.’ Racing Post ‘Celebrates the club’s incredible journey, recounting tales and memories that tell of friendships, rivalries and of course trophies. He brings to life this pre-war era using his extensive knowledge of the club’s history tallied with reports in local media and club folklore. Provides a complete picture of Liverpool’s colourful history. Here’s looking forward to Red Odyssey part two.’ It’s Round and It’s White ‘A history of Liverpool, but one written in an affectionate way, and from a personal perspective. Particularly informative on the pre-Bill Shankly years, which are much less well documented than the subsequent decades.’ Backpass Magazine We Conquered All of Europe: Red Odyssey II ‘We Conquered All of Europe brings things back to life. Although you know the ending you will still get that funny feeling as you go through this account of what was a wonderful season and how the past four years under Jürgen and company have seen Liverpool Football Club rise again.’ Red All Over the Land ‘Excellent as always. I’d highly recommend it.’ Dave Usher, The Liverpool Way ‘We Conquered All of Europe provides a unique first-hand view from around the stands, from not only Jeff but a plethora of supporters who you discover each find varying degrees of significance in moments which have transpired over the last four years. It’s a journey from the stands, grounded in emotion – with a touch of humour – which is then delicately intertwined with statements from the media and Klopp at the time, with views from former players Jamie Carragher, Jimmy Case and John Barnes also adding another valuable perspective. -

Bill Shankly - the Glenbuck Years
Bill Shankly - The Glenbuck Years BILL SHANKLY - THE GLENBUCK YEARS Researched and written by David P. Worthington BA (Hons), PG Dip, MA. Typeset by Elaine Bell, Baird Institute, Cumnock December 1997 __________________________________________________________________ The almost abandoned village of Glenbuck sits quietly and unpretentiously on the edge of the Ayrshire coalfield just of the main road from Muirkirk to Ayr. The settlement had started life as one that relied on agriculture; however, by around 1800 it had been dragged into the world of industrialisation. Glenbuck was home to 800 people with public housing built in for them. It also had an ironworks with its foundry and blast furnace, a limestone quarry, two dedicated ironstone pits, two coal mines and two pits that gave up both coal and ironstone. The ironworks were closed in 1813 but the coal miners remained enabling the locals to eke out a hard and difficult existence. It was against this background that John Shankly moved to Glenbuck from the nearby village of Douglas to seek work in the chosen profession of tailoring. He met and married Barbara Blyth who came from one of Glenbuck’s most celebrated families. Her brother Bob, a top class sprinter, played football for Glasgow Rangers, Middlesborough, Preston and Dundee before becoming player-manager and finally chairman at Portsmouth. A second brother, Billy played for Portsmouth, Preston, and Carlisle before joining Bob as an administrator and director, and then chairman of Carlisle. Bill, or Willy as he was more commonly known, was born to John and Barbara Shankly on the 2nd September 1913, the ninth of ten children, youngest of five boys.
