Kiseleff 32 Bucharest Romania , Herastrau Anyone who still thinks that Bucharest is a city of concrete and cement has clearly never been to the city’s lung, the incomparable Herastrau Park. Quite simply, this glorious park, spread over 187 hectares around Herastrau lake is one of the jewels in Bucharest’s crown, which might explain why half of the city chooses to spend its summer Sunday afternoons here. Herastrau was laid out from 1930-36 on what had until then been mainly marshland around the (natural) lake. The Village Museum - which occupies a large part of Herastrau and which is one of its most popular attractions was created at the same time. As early as the late 19th century, however, parts of the lakeshore served as a promenade for Bucharest’s wealthy, and the area surrounding the lake had long since become the most fashionable in the city. Indeed, the residence of Romania’s royal family, the Elisabeta Palace, is found inside Herastrau (although it is closed to the public). The name Herastrau has been in general use since the early 1960s. Herastrau was long neglected in the wake of the Romanian revolution of 1989, as the priorities of a country in transition lie elsewhere. In recent times however, the park has enjoyed much investment and has for a couple of years now once again been able to claim the title of the city’s best.

  • Cultural Studies USES of the THRONE HALL in the FORMER
SWEDISH JOURNAL OF ROMANIAN STUDIES Cultural studies USES OF THE THRONE HALL IN THE FORMER ROYAL PALACE IN BUCHAREST FROM 1947 TO 2019: A SOCIAL SEMIOTIC PERSPECTIVE Marina-Cristiana ROTARU Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest, Romania e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate, from a socio-semiotic perspective, the manner in which the political regimes installed after the forced abdication of King Mihai I (on 30 December 1947) used the Throne Hall in the former royal palace in Bucharest to meet their own needs. In December 1947, Romania was illegally turned from a constitutional monarchy into a popular republic, with the help of the Red Army. Then, the popular republic was transformed into a socialist republic, in fact, a communist dictatorship. In December 1989, the communist regime collapsed and was replaced by a post-communist one, a regime which did not seem willing to leave behind the communist ideological legacy, manifest, in the 1990s, in the brutal repression of anti-government protesters in University Square in Bucharest, or in the Romanian Mineriads of 1990 and 1991. The political regimes that succeeded to power after 1947 deprived the Throne Hall of its monarchic symbolism and used it in ways incongruent with its inherent function, albeit for official purposes. The manner in which the communist regime made use of this particular place is indicative of its intent and success in reinventing traditions or adapting older traditions to its ideological goals, in order to alienate Romanians from their recent past, in disrespect for the nation’s heritage.

  • Spring 98 4/16 Final
AUSTRIANCENTER STUDIES FOR AUSTRIAN STUDIESNEWSLETTER Vol. 10, No. 2 Spring 1998 WU Vienna, U of Minnesota train executives for global economy by Daniel Pinkerton Since 1992, the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Man- agement (CSOM) and the Vienna Economics University (WU) have had a formal student exchange. By 1999, however, CSOM and WU hope to offer a joint Executive MBA that would require successful candidates to work with faculty from both institutions. Management students with an interest in the emerging Central and East European markets would be clear winners, since the combination of WU, Austria’s premier business school (and one of the best in Europe), with the CSOM, whose rankings continue to rise (currently, it is among the top 25 national business schools), would create a formidable international program. The Executive MBA at WU would become CSOM’s third “offshore” degree granting program, following the Executive Master’s program at Olsztyn University of Agriculture and Technology, Poland, established in 1995, and the Executive MBA program at Warsaw School of Eco- nomics, established in 1996. (Both Polish programs were developed in partnership with the Humphrey Institute’s Center for Nations in Transi- tion; see a related story on that Minnesota institution on p. 3.) The suc- cess of the Warsaw Executive MBA program in particular led CSOM to capitalize on its WU connection and explore the possibility of establish- ing a second offshore program there. After all, WU was Austria’s top business school and Vienna was renowned as the gateway to East Cen- tral Europe. “We knew from the beginning that we wanted to have more than just a simple exchange of students with WU,” said Professor Mahmood Zaidi, CSOM’s Director of International Studies.

  • Editing Method for the Bulletin of the Transilvania
Bulletin of the Transilvania University of Brașov Series IV: Philology and Cultural Studies • Vol. 12 (61) No. 1 – 2019 https://doi.org/10.31926/but.pcs.2019.61.12.1 National identity in King Michael’s anniversary speech in the Romanian Parliament Oana ARDELEANU1 In this study, I examine the construction of national identity in King Michael’s 90th anniversary speech, held in the Romanian Parliament in October 2011. This speech represents the quintessence of all His Majesty’s efforts to promote Romania as one lawful European member that earned its place next to the other European countries not only by returning to democracy in 1989 but also through its constant endeavour to promote the core values of the European Union. Using theories on national identity rooted in linguistics and sociology, in this study I investigate if and how national identity was emphasised and linguistically constructed in this speech. Given the political situation in Romania and the European context, the King’s speech comes as an attempt to unite people around a common goal: to create a stronger Romania for the future generations, in which a strong national identity might play a crucial part. Through the analysis, it became obvious to various extents that the speech emphasised and linguistically constructed national identity. Keywords: national identity, King Michael, political speech, construction of national identity 1. Introduction Even though the idea of autochthonous national identity is widely debated throughout Europe, the idea of an “identity” that might be considered “national” seems to be only a subjective construction. The term ‘identity’ is a fluctuating phenomenon.
