Volume compilation © 2011 Portland Press Limited Chapter 3 Communicating Biochemistry: Meetings and Events Ian Dransfield and Brian Beechey Scientific conferences organized by the Biochemical Society represent a key facet of activity throughout the Society’s history and remain central to the present mission of promoting the advancement of molecular biosciences. Importantly, scientific conferences are an important means of communicating research findings, establishing collaborations and, critically, a means of cementing the community of biochemical scientists together. However, in the past 25 years, we have seen major changes to the way in which science is communicated and also in the way that scientists interact and establish collabo- rations. For example, the ability to show videos, “fly through” molecular structures or show time-lapse or real-time movies of molecular events within cells has had a very positive impact on conveying difficult concepts in presentations. However, increased pressures on researchers to obtain/maintain funding can mean that there is a general reluctance to present novel, unpublished data. In addition, the development of email and electronic access to scientific journals has dramatically altered the potential for communi- cation and accessibility of information, perhaps reducing the necessity of attending meetings to make new contacts and to hear exciting new science.     COOPERATION AND DISCRIMINATION IN ACADEMIC PUBLISHING A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Boontarika Paphawasit Department of Economics and Finance College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences Brunel University London, UK June 2017 ABSTRACT This thesis consists of four essays in collaboration and discrimination. The first essay examines the role of collaboration as a determinant of publication productivity in the field of economics, measured by means of citations, journal rank, and journal impact factor. The analysis employs cross-sectional data of 1,512 journal publications published in 2012 in 16 economics journals. The findings show a positive effect of team size on publication productivity, whereas research teams consisting of only one gender perform better in terms of research quality than gender-mixed teams. The analysis also indicates a negative relationship between female-dominated teams and research productivity. The second essay examines the impact of physical attractiveness on productivity. As literature found a strong impact on wages and career progression, it can be either due to discrimination in favour of good-looking people or can reflect an association between attractiveness and productivity. We utilise a context of academic publishing where there is no or limited face-to-face interaction. Using data on 2,800 authors, the results suggest that physical attractiveness has significantly important benefits. The third essay also considers the effect of physical attractiveness, as assessed based on pictures of top scientists, on their probability of winning the Nobel Prize. In contrast, the results show that attractiveness is negatively correlated with the probability of being awarded the Nobel, with the magnitude of this effect being not negligible.

    Awards & Honors International Recognition of Kyoto University’s Research 誉Topic Professor Inaba receives the L’Oréal–UNESCO Award for Women in Science 2014 Professor Kayo Inaba at the Awarad Ceremony on 19 March 2014 Professor Kayo Inaba is one of the five Laureates of the L’Oréal–UNESCO Awards For Women in Science 2014, which were celebrated in Paris with events from 16th to 19th of March. The L’Oréal– UNESCO For Women in Science Awards, established by the world’s largest cosmetics company L’Oréal and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1998, aims to improve the status of women in science by recognizing outstanding research conducted by women researchers around the world. Since the establishment, the Awards have recognized women researchers, based on a long-term perspective, who have contributed to scientific progress. This year, Professor Kayo Inaba was awarded for her discoveries concerning the ‘decisive role of dendritic cells in the immune system of healthy and diseased subjects’. Although the history of vaccines can be traced back to the early 19th century, when the first successful vaccine for smallpox was developed, only recently have the mechanisms underlying immunological responses begun to be uncovered. Professor Inaba is known for her work on demonstrating the importance of dendritic cells, which act as “sentinels” Kayo Inaba completed her doctoral degree at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Science, and became the first female associate professor at Kyoto University in Faculty of Science. She was promoted to full professor in 1999. She became the University’s first female Dean in 2003, and was appointed Director of the Center for Women Researchers in 2007, and Vice-President for Gender Equality in 2013.

Located almost at the center of the Japanese archipelago on the Seto Inland Sea in Hyogo Prefecture, Kobe has developed along with the opening of the Port of Kobe in 1868. A Foreign Settlement that formed near the port became the doorway by which foreign cultures entered Japan. This settlement also played an important role in bringing a stylish and modern atmosphere to the entire city. Western clothes, furniture, cakes and shoes as well as heavy industries such as marine transport, industrial machinery, ship building and the iron and steel industries appeared one after another, spurring on the local economy. The population is 1,544,120 (as of May 1st, 2012). The weather is generally mild all year round with an average temperature of 16,8 C° and an annual rainfall of 1,624.5 mm(as of 2011). Kobe medical school School of Medicine originally was Hyogo Prefectural Medical College, which was built together with the establishment of Hyogo Prefecture. In March 1968, Hyogo Prefectural Medical College was nationalized and named Kobe University School of Medicine. After a 138 years of its history, it has become one of the core school and hospital in Kansai Area. A mission of medicine is to contribute realization of environment in which the people can live healthily and safely.

    Awards & Honors International Recognition of Kyoto University’s Research 誉Topic Kyoto University Alumnus Awarded Nobel Prize in Physics Prof. Isamu Akasaki, a graduate of Kyoto University’s Faculty of Science; professor of Nagoya University; professor of Meijo University, has been jointly awarded the 2014 Noble Prize in Physics. The prize motivation is “for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources.” The prize was jointly awarded to Prof. Akasaki together with Photo: Meijo Prof. Hiroshi Amano of Nagoya University, Japan and Prof. Shuji University Nakamura of the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. Prof. Isamu Akasaki Prof. Akasaki became interested in Kyoto University after hearing from a graduate of his high school who enrolled Kyoto University about the atmosphere of its laboratories, its culture of encouraging creativity, and its prominent researchers.1) After enrollment, he studied analytical chemistry under Prof. Masayoshi Ishibashi. As his student life progressed, he began to feel a desire to do or create something new, no matter how small. This award is conferred by the Emperor of Japan for meritorious deeds, or for excellence in the fields of science, art, or sport, including in scientific discovery and invention.
