2009 Abstracts 2.46 MB 3 WELCOME It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Stuttgart on the occasion of the 22nd EMSOS Conference along with the 10th EMSOS Symposium for Nurses and Allied Health Professionals. This year’s EMSOS conference, held Thursday May 14 and Friday 15 2009 at the Haus der Wirtschaft in downtown Stuttgart, is preceded by an interdisciplinary training course »Bone Tumors in Children and Adolescents« on Wednesday, May 13, and followed by a sarcoma-patient support meeting and meetings of the COSS, CWS, and EURO-E.W.I.N.G. sarcoma groups on Saturday, May 16. We are very pleased to announce that researchers from 32 different countries have submitted a total of over 250 scientific abstracts for presentation at the 2009 EMSOS meeting. In addition, some of Europe’s and North America’s leading experts have agreed to hold key lectures on a variety of topics relevant to all those with a special interest in bone and soft tissue tumors. Key speakers include Ronnie Barr, Hamilton, CDN, Pancras Hogendoorn, Leiden, NL, Jeremy Whelan, London, UK, Ewa Koscielniak, Stuttgart, DE and Jörg-Thomas Hartmann, Tübingen, DE. We are particularly pleased to announce that Tom DeLa- ney, Boston, USA, will present the Campanacci Lecture on Proton and Charged Particle Radiotherapy for Challenging Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas and Richard Gorlick, New York, USA, the EMSOS Lecture on Current Concepts on the Molecular Biology of Osteosarcoma. Putting a special emphasis on children, adolescents, and young adults, these and other speakers will examine recent advances in the fields of tumor biology, local and systemic treatments for bone and soft-tissue sarcomas, and innova- tions in quality of life and follow-up programs. While we fit a lot of scientific content into EMSOS conferences, they are not all work and no play. To get the Stuttgart conference off on the right foot, the EMSOS-Board invites you to join them for a welcome party on Wednesday, 13 May in the excellent »Plenum« restaurant which is based in the parliament building of the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. On Thursday, 14 May, we hope you will join us for the annual EMSOS gala dinner. This year’s dinner has been given the motto »A taste of Stuttgart« and during the evening in what was formerly Germany’s largest cooperative wine press you will be able to enjoy some of the best Stuttgart wines, culinary dishes and entertainment. Stuttgart’s Lord Mayor, Dr. Wolfgang Schuster, has kindly invited those still in Stuttgart on the evening of Friday 15 May to a drinks reception at Stuttgart’s City Hall, following on from which the Allianz Insurance Company has invited us and those attending the national sarcoma survivor meeting organized by the German Childhood Cancer Foundation on the following day to a dinner at their headquarters. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION POINTS The Medical Council of Baden-Wuerttemberg has accredited the training course with 8 points, the EMSOS Conference with 16 points and the GPOH-Research Forum with 6 points. The »Arbeitsgemeinschaft Internistische Onkologie« (AIO) has accredited the EMSOS conference with 11 AIO points. The Nurses and Allied Professionals Symposium is recognized for 9 CME points by the German Society for Voluntary Further Education. All authors are expected to be by their poster during their poster session and also to be present during the poster presentations and awards ceremony which will take place during the afternoon of Friday, 15 May.     Abschluss der Schlichtung: Geißler plädiert für ein Stuttgart 21 Plus Heiner Geißler hat sich in seinem Stuttgart-21-Schlichterspruch für einen Weiterbau des Projekts ausgesprochen, aber deutliche Verbesserungen gefordert. Ein Abbruch des Bahnprojekts käme nach Ansicht Geißlers zu teuer. Schlussplädoyers Befürworter und Gegner des Bahnprojekts Stuttgart 21 haben in ihren Plädoyers am Ende der Schlichtung noch einmal eindringlich für ihre Positionen geworben. Dabei schlugen vor allem die Befürworter eher versöhnliche Töne an. So betonte Baden-Württembergs Ministerpräsident Stefan Mappus, die Tieferlegung des Hauptbahnhofs sei für die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des Landes enorm wichtig. Seitens der Landeshauptstadt, kündigte Oberbürgermeister Wolfgang Schuster an, man wolle auch künftig über ein Bürgerforum Bahnprojekt Stuttgart - Ulm mit den Stuttgartern im Gespräch bleiben. Außerdem wird die Stadt die bereits von der Bahn gekauften Gleisflächen einer Stiftung anvertrauen, um sie so vor Immobilienspekulationen zu schützen. Parallel soll die Bürgerbeteiligung für die Gestaltung des neuen Rosensteinquartiers fortgeführt werden. Der nachfolgende Beitrag bietet einen Überblick über die Abschlussplädoyers der Schlichtungsrunde: Dr.-Ing. Volker Kefer, Vorstand Technik, Systemverbund und Dienstleistungen, DB AG: Volker Kefer beschrieb in seiner Abschlussrede noch einmal die Vorzüge von Stuttgart 21. Durch das Projekt seien 12 Millionen zusätzliche Fahrgäste möglich, das Verkehrsangebot werde stark verbessert, zentraler Aspekt sei dabei die Neubaustrecke Wendlingen-Ulm. Das Konzept der Gegner, K 21, sei zwar technisch ebenfalls machbar, aber es berge noch viele offene Fragen. S 21 dagegen stehe auf einer gesicherten Grundlage. Durch zahlreiche Bohrungen, Feld- und Laborversuche habe man umfassende Kenntnisse über das Terrain, auf dem gebaut werden solle, gesammelt. S 21 sei durchgeplant, planfestgestellt und finanziert. Bei K 21 müsse dies erst noch gemacht werden, was bei der Realisierung einen Verzug bis 2035 bedeuten könne.

The typical clinical presentation is pain and swelling above the affected area. The most common sites of involvement are the mandible and the metaphysis of long bones. Histologically and biologically, desmoplastic fibroma mimics extra-abdominal desmoid tumor of soft tissue. Case Presentation and Literature Review: A case of a 27-year old man with DF in the ilium, including the clinical, radiological and histological findings over a 4-year period is presented here. CT scans performed in 3-year intervals prior to surgical intervention were compared with respect to tumor extension and cortical breakthrough. The patient was treated with curettage and grafting based on anatomical considerations. Follow-up CT scans over 18-months are also documented here. Additionally, a review and analysis of 271 cases including the presented case with particular emphasis on imaging patterns in MRI and CT as well as treatment modalities and outcomes are presented. Conclusion: In patients with desmoplastic fibroma, CT is the preferred imaging technique for both the diagnosis of intraosseus tumor extension and assessment of cortical involvement, whereas MRI is favored for the assessment of extraosseus tumor growth and preoperative planning.

    Surviving the Bobcat Fire By Robert Anderson As recently as December 9, our solar astronomer, Steve Padilla, was taking his evening walk and noticed the smoke of a hotspot flaring up in the canyon just below the Observatory. It was a remnant of the Bobcat Fire, which started nearby on September 6. The local Angeles National Forest firefighters were notified of the flareup, either to monitor it or extinguish it if needed. They have returned many times during the last three months. And we are always glad to see them, especially those individuals who put water to flame here and battled to save the most productive and famous observatory in history. On the sunny Labor Day weekend, when the Bobcat Fire started near Cogswell Reservoir in a canyon east of the Mount Wilson, the Observatory’s maintenance staff went on cautious alert. As the fire spread out of control, it stayed to the east burning north and south of the reservoir for days, threatening communities in the foothills of the San Gabriels. Nevertheless, all non-essential staff and residents were evacuated off the mountain just in case.
