LPD 21 USS

The 22nd reunion was held at the Crowne Plaza Riverfront Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida, October 7th through October 11th, 2009. The organization enjoyed a very successful reunion. The Memorial Service, St. Augustine and Jacksonville tours, Dinner Cruise, Welcome Aboard Dinner, and a Dinner Dance Banquet were well at- tended. We want to thank the reunion committee for a job well done.

The reunion committee worked hard in providing this annual opportunity for our shipmates to become reacquainted with old friends and shipmates. These reunions are a great opportunity to make new friends, or just reminisce sea stories of bygone days. The days of the battleship, the most feared dreadnaught on the high seas, are long gone, but the battleship sailors live on and on.

Newer and more deadly ships are joining the fleet providing firepower that we can- not imagine only conjecture. USS New Jersey Veterans Inc Officer & Directors

ANSWERS TO NAUTICAL QUIZ

1. MIDWAY ISLAND

Plaque from Midway Island honoring our brave fighting men.

2. ENSIGN GAY: Sole survivor of torpedo squadron 8 (CV-8, USS HORNET) at the battle of Midway. During an interview with Lieutenant Porter, October 12, 1943, Ensign Gay stated: Personally, I was just lucky. I've never understood why I was the only one that came back, but it turned out that way, and I want to be sure that the men that didn't come back get the credit for the work that they did. They followed Comdr. Waldron without batting an eye and I don't feel like a lot of people have felt that we made mistakes and that Comdr. Waldron got us into trouble. I don't feel that way at all. I know that if I had it all to do over again, even knowing that the odds were going to be like they were, knowing him like I did know him, I'd follow him again through exactly the same thing because I trusted him very well. We did things that he wanted us to do not because he was our boss, but because we felt that if we did the things he wanted us to do then it was the right thing to do.

The Zeros that day just caught us off balance. We were at a disadvantage all the way around. ______Ensign Gay received the Navy Cross for his heroism in the Battle of Midway and also the Presidential Unit Ci- tation given Torpedo Squadron 8.

3. Admiral Bull Halsey, having dinner with the crew on the Battleship USS New Jersey during WW II in the south Pacific Ocean.

When I come to the end of the day And the sun has set for me I want no rites in a gloom-filled room Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not too long And not with your head bowed low. Remember the love we once shared – Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take And each must go alone It’s all a part of the Maker’s plan, A step on the road home. When you are lonely and sick at heart Go to the friends we know And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds— Miss me, but let me go.

THE NAVY’S NEW PIRATE CATCHER

USS INDEPENDENCE LCS-2 We have all been hearing about the Navy’s new triple hulled ship. The USS Independence LCS-2 was launch sev- eral months ago. The ship was built by General Dynamics and is called a ‘littoral combat ship (LCS). This tri- maran can move huge weapons around faster than any ship in the Navy. Littoral means close to shore, and that’s where these ships will operate. They possess the capacity to launch heli- copters, tilt-winged aircraft, and armored amphibians assault craft. This tri-maran is the first of the new fire-breathing breed, ready to scoot out at a rumored 60 knots (68 MPH). It’s a speedy, heavily-armed carrier for helicopters and tilt-winged aircraft. The Pirates may want to find another profession.
