Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are a manual on mind control, meditation and mental discipline—a manual for spiritual freedom. Crisp and pithy in rendition, the sutras have an aphoristic quality and urge deeper reflection and dedicated application. Across various philosophies the denotation of yoga varies. Patanjali uses the term ‘yoga’ to denote a complete cessation of mental modifications so that consciousness rests within itself in the state of moksha or liberation. This teaching has been delivered through emphasis on practice rather than mere philosophy. This is verily a manual for us to operate the mind and thus our life. The Yoga Sutras are divided into four padas or chapters. The first chapter, the Samadhi Pada on which this volume is based, focuses on concentration of the mind and the practical aspects necessary for attaining meditative absorption. The second chapter, the Sadhana Pada, is about attaining and holding that single-pointedness through reining in the agitations of the mind by cultivating dispassion, discrimination and dedication. The third chapter, the Vibhuti Pada, focuses on the technique of samyama which is the combination of concentration, meditation and communion for the liberation of the spirit, while the fourth chapter, the Kaivalya Pada, is a metaphysical disquisition which deals with various subjects 5 as a sort of explanation of some of the themes dealt with in the earlier chapters. It is fitting to draw the reader’s attention to the clarity and simplicity with which Swamiji Maharaj comments on these sutras. Swami Krishnananda was the living embodiment of that awareness to which the sutras and all spiritual texts guide. It is commonly said that Sanskrit, the language of the Gods, is by far the only one that has transcended, to some extent, the limitations of vivid expression and bears in it the ability to express the nuances of spiritual processes and the resultant experiences that the great Sages and Masters have experienced and conveyed to us. That Swamiji Maharaj is able to bend the limited English language to yield to his knowledge is a completely humbling experience. These Yoga Sutras of Patanjali spoken by Swami Krishnananda are being made available to the public for the first time. It is our desire to retain the original lectures in their spoken form to a large extent. The are some unique twists of phrases and application of words that are uniquely Swamiji in origin and it has been sought to allow those to be as they were intended, without undermining the reverence to the English language. Consequently the lectures have been edited in very few places to render them the way Swamiji Maharaj himself spoke them. 6 Chapter 1 THE AIM OF YOGA The whole of our life is a successive series of efforts – whether it is the effort that I put forth, or that which someone else puts forth. All these efforts have a common background, although the efforts of human beings are variegated and there is also an apparent diversity of the aims behind the efforts. The farmer’s effort is towards producing harvest in the field; the industrialist’s effort is towards production of goods and such other items in his field; the effort of the schoolmaster or the professor is in another direction; and so on and so forth. We have an apparent diversity of aims, motivated by a diversity of efforts. But this is a great illusion that is before us, and we live in a world of illusions which we mistake for realities. The illusion arises on account of our inability to see beyond a certain limit of the horizon of our mental perceptions. The farmer forgets that the production of the harvest in the field is not the only aim, or rather the ultimate aim, of his efforts. It has another aim altogether connected with certain others, and so on and so forth, in an endless chain which cannot easily come within the comprehension of an untutored mind. The stomach does not eat for its satisfaction. We know very well why the stomach eats. The stomach may say “I eat”, but it does not eat; the eater is somebody else, though it is thrust into the stomach. The legs do not walk for their own sake. What do the legs gain by walking? They are walking for some other purpose – somebody else’s 7 purpose, not their own. Nor do the eyes gain anything by seeing; the eyes see for somebody else. Likewise, there is an inherent and underlying basic aim which is transcendent to the immediate purpose visible in front of any particular individual who puts forth effort, just as the legs do not walk for their own sake, the eyes do not see for their own sake, the stomach does not

While the practice of yoga can indeed increase physical strength and flexibility and aid in calming the mind, what’s the point if we’re still rigid, weak and stressed-out in day-to-day life? There are five Yamas: Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulne ss), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (right use of energy), and Aparigraha (non-greed or non-hoarding) 2. NIYAMA – Positive duties or observances The second limb Niyama, usually refers to duties dir‐ ected towards ourselves, but can also be considered with our actions towards the outside world. The prefix ‘ni’ is a Sanskrit verb which means ‘inward’ or ‘within’. There are five Niyamas: saucha (cleanliness), santosh a (contentment), tapas (discipline or burning desire or conversely, burning of desire), svadhyaya (self- study or self-reflection, and study of spiritual texts), and isvarapranidaha (surrender to a higher power).

    Dhyana in Hinduism Dhyana (IAST: Dhyāna) in Hinduism means contemplation and meditation.[1] Dhyana is taken up in Yoga exercises, and is a means to samadhi and self- knowledge.[2] The various concepts of dhyana and its practice originated in the Vedic era of Hinduism, and the practice has been influential within the diverse traditions of Hinduism.[3][4] It is, in Hinduism, a part of a self-directed awareness and unifying Yoga process by which the yogi realizes Self (Atman, soul), one's relationship with other living beings, and Ultimate Reality.[3][5][6] Dhyana is also found in other Indian religions such as Buddhism and Jainism. New Light on Dhyana Yogi Harinam Baba Prem Tom Beal The western mind has often missed important subtitles when attempting to experience and understand the ancient teachings regarding meditation. For most people the goal of meditation is to relax, whereas in India meditation cannot be achieved without relaxing first. The second misconception is that the mind should be empty. An examination of the words Dhyana and mantra will illuminate this and clearly reduce the most common misconceptions regarding meditation. Roots of the words. The Sanskrit word for meditation is Dhyana, which comes from the verbal root dhi or dhya. Both roots mean to —think“, this is particularly true in the sense of inquiry, examination or introspection. In fact, in Vedic yoga, —dhi“ is a reference to the Buddhi or thinking and discerning mechanism of the mind. It would be correct to call the intellect the Buddhi in its lower function. Dhyana as meditation is not merely a quiet mind, though this can be a significant achievement. One of the initial goals of Dhyana should be proper or controlled thought. Clearly illustrated in Patanjali‘s yoga sutras, which states in the eight limbs that before meditation can begin one must possess concentration (Dharana). Concentration is not the removal of thought but the focusing of thought onto a single object or a single thought. An advanced state of the final three limbs (Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi) is often referred to as —one-pointed ness“. One-pointed ness is the continuous flow of thought, but each thought is in perfect harmony with the preceding thought.

    Page 1 of 21 PATANJALI’S YOGA SUTRAS. Patanjali’s yoga sutras are considered to be a central guide to yoga practice and experience. A guide that it is helpful to return to again and again as a reference point and map that can help to make sense of some of the territory we enter through yoga practice. It can give us a foothold when we first start out in our practice but perhaps much of it only starts to seem relevant and helpful after some experience and depth of practice. Just a reminder on a couple of ideas used in philosophy which may have a bearing on how we take the book: Dualism – where the nature of reality is described by separating it out into component parts: matter, energy and consciousness. Non-dualism – Where the apparent diversity of life is described as an illusion or mirage – all is ultimately connected at source – in this case consciousness. Patanjali is described as dualistic by some and non-dualistic by others! Perhaps the confusion is due to the fact that elements of nature and reality are separated to help explanation. The central question relating to this is whether there is an aspect of consciousness existing separately from matter and energy within a human being, a spiritual element if you like? This could be seen to be implied at times in Patanjali. Or does a base level of consciousness exist within us only as the deepest layer of our own mind? Personally I feel we can happily appreciate Patanjali from a Humanistic perspective as an exploration of layers of human life and depth psychology.

    Yoga Sutras – 4 books Book one: Samadhi Pada: a Portion on Contemplation. The first chapter of the Yoga Sutras defines yoga, the aim of practice, and the various problems that may crop up as one endeavors to reach the yoga state. The first book also talks about the process of separating our identity from our thoughts. We should concentrate and absorb our self into the Spirit (Purusha) instead of mis-identifying with our Prakritic self. Book two: Sadhana Pada, The Portion on practice. In this book, Patanjali explains how to attain the goal of Samadhi. This book explains the mind, suffering, and how to live a yoga lifestyle (classical yoga, renunciant). Patanjali explains the three paths of practice that The Bhagavad Gita teaches. Patanjali says we can use our Body/Karma/Action, our Mind/Jnana/Alignment, and our Heart/Bhakti/attitude. In 2:29, Patanjali outlines the eight limb path which is made up of yama (the don’ts), niyamas (the do’s), asana (postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sense withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (contemplation). In sutras 2.4 – 2.9, Patanjali defines the five afflictions (kleshas) that cause suffering. The primary klesha is ignorance, or misperception, which gives rise to the other four: ego consciousness (identifying with the small, limited, individual self), desire, aversion, and clinging to life (or fear). To reduce the kleshas, meditation is prescribed. Otherwise, actions will be conditioned by suffering and one’s experience in the world will be determined by the intention behind those actions. Here, the Sutras establish the cause and effect nature of existence and call on the yogi to recognize that actions have consequences.

Their views on purusa, prakariti, pramanas (sources of valid knowledge), bondage, and liberation. In this unit you will be explained what are the eight fold path of yoga, how liberation can be attained, how mind gets purified, how to control bodily act, and some more issues allied to Yoga School of thought. The Yoga philosophy speaks about the theory and practice for the realization of the ultimate truth concerning human being and the world. In Vedanta, yoga is understood as ‘union’, i.e. spiritual union of the individual soul with the supreme soul. This view is not explained clearly. Patanjali, who is the founder of the Yoga System says, yoga is a spiritual effort to attain perfection through the control of sense organs, gross body, subtle mind, intellect and ego.

It seems the consensus of opinion of the great minds of the world, and it has been nearly demonstrated by researchers into physical nature, that we are the outcome and manifestation of an absolute condition, back of our present relative condition, and are going forward, to return again to that absolute. This being granted, the question is, which is better, the absolute or this state? There are not wanting people who think that this manifested state is the highest state of man. Thinkers of great calibre are of the opinion that we are manifested specimens of undifferentiated being, and this differentiated state is higher than the absolute. Because in the absolute there cannot be any quality they imagine that it must be insensate, dull, and lifeless, that only this life can be enjoyed, and therefore we must cling to it. First of all we want to inquire into other solutions of life. There was an old solution that man after death remained the same, that all his good sides, minus his evil sides, remained forever.
