The Eight Foldpath of Yoga the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Refers to Eight
The eight foldpath of Yoga The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali refers to eight limbs of yoga, each of which offers guidance on how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. The word ‘yoga’ means to connect, unite or ‘yoke’. The thing we look to connect to is the true Self, also known as the ‘divine essence’, ‘ultimate self’, or atman. According to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, there is an eight-fold path leading to liberation, known as the ‘Ashtanga Yoga System’ or ‘8 Limbs of Yoga’ (the word ‘ashta’ means ‘eight’ and ‘anga’ means ‘limb’). 1. Restraints moral disciplines and moral vows This first limb, Yama, refers to vows, disciplines or practices that are primarily concerned with the world around us, and our interaction with it. While the practice of yoga can indeed increase physical strength and flexibility and aid in calming the mind, what’s the point if we’re still rigid, weak and stressed-out in day-to-day life? There are five Yamas: Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulne ss), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (right use of energy), and Aparigraha (non-greed or non-hoarding) 2. NIYAMA – Positive duties or observances The second limb Niyama, usually refers to duties dir‐ ected towards ourselves, but can also be considered with our actions towards the outside world. The prefix ‘ni’ is a Sanskrit verb which means ‘inward’ or ‘within’. There are five Niyamas: saucha (cleanliness), santosh a (contentment), tapas (discipline or burning desire or conversely, burning of desire), svadhyaya (self- study or self-reflection, and study of spiritual texts), and isvarapranidaha (surrender to a higher power). -

Last few decades have seen a 10 resurgence in the utility of Yoga and Meditation as a practice with growing scientific evidence 11 behind it. Significant scientific literature has been published, illustrating the benefits of Yogic 12 practices including asana, pranayama and dhyana on mental and physical well being. 13 Electrophysiological and recent functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies have 14 found explicit neural signatures for Yogic practices. In this article, we present a review of the 15 philosophy of Yoga, based on the dualistic Sankhya school, as applied to consciousness 16 summarized by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras followed by discussion on the five vritti (modulations 17 of mind), practice of pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, different states of samadhi, and samapatti. We 18 introduce Yogic Theory of Mind and Consciousness (YTMC), a cohesive theory that can model 19 both external modulations and internal states of the mind. -

When spiritual awareness grows, thoughts, concepts and values also change. So in this lesson we are going to study the concept of spirituality and how to transform this in our life. Mantra chanting is very ancient technique to maintain inner strength and tranquillity. So Raj Yog and Mantra vibration will also be the focussed in this lesson. We are also going to discuss how one can develop inner awareness and its importance. Without spiritual aspect life is incomplete and it is yogic philosophy which first purifies body discipline, mind and growing in spiritual life. The concept of Ashtang Yog or Raj Yog is very practical for Poorn swasthya (complete health). At last we will also know about the concept of meditation.
