  • The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
PHILOSOPHY/THEOSOPHY T The purpose of this book is to bring together in a convenient and HE coherent form the many HERMES articles written by Prof. Iyer that dealt with this subject. In truth, meditation and self-study represent two HE OGA UTRAS T Y S sides of one human activity, something analogous to the operation of Y the systolic and diastolic movements of the human heart. The one is the OGA centrifugal movement of consciousness expanding to Universals beyond OF PATANJALI the limits of Self; the other is the centripetal movement focusing with laser-like precision upon the particulars within the limits of Self. They S represent roughly the sub-principles of Buddhi and Manas acting within the incarnated Manasic principle; for the spiritual aspirant they should U – in time - become as natural as breathing in and breathing out. These tr two aspects of the inbreathing and outbreathing within the neophyte’s consciousness are dealt with in the three treatises of The Voice of the A Silence, as well as in Prof. Iyer’s seminal article, Meditation and Self-Study. S Alas, most of us find this existential balance to be elusive, as there are OF many obstacles to such a natural and easy relationship to meditation and self-study, obstacles that have been self-created and reinforced over many P lifetimes of misdirected thought and attempts to short-circuit what is unavoidable in the spiritual path: the careful and painstaking unwinding of A the coils of self-induced delusions. These obstacles are detailed in the Yoga T ANJAL Sutras with surprising brevity and familiarity, suggesting to the perceptive reader that the author had so thoroughly studied and mastered the subject that he is able to reduce the issues to their fewest essential elements.

ימה ياما یاما Yama (Hinduism) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yama_(Hinduism) Yama (Hinduism) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In Hindu mythology, Yama (Sanskrit: यम ) is the lord of death, first recorded in the Vedas. Yama belongs to an early stratum Yama of Indo-Iranian theology. In Vedic tradition Yama was Death considered to have been the first mortal who died and espied the way to the celestial abodes, thus in virtue of precedence he became the ruler of the departed. In some passages, however, he is already regarded as the god of death. Yama's name can be interpreted to mean "twin", and in some myths he is paired with a twin sister Yam ī. Yama is assisted by Chitragupta who is assigned with the task of keeping complete records of actions of human beings on the earth, and upon their death deciding to have them reincarnated as a superior or inferior organism, depending on their actions on the earth (Karma). Yama is also the lord of justice and is sometimes referred to Devanagari यम as Dharma, in reference to his unswerving dedication to maintaining order and adherence to harmony. • A Working Glossary for the Use of Students of Theosophical Literature
A WORKING GLOSSARY FOR ■ THE USE OF STUDENTS T heosophical L it e r a t u r e THIRD EDITION. WITH AN APPENDIX ARYAN PRESS. NEW YORK. THE PATH, 144 MADISON AVE. l8 Q 2 . Digitized by b o o g i e Digitized by i ^ o o Q i e tij 2 0 j /fA. Pl^EFflTO^Y WOpDS. glossary is said to be “ a vocabulary explaining words which are obscure, antiquated, local, or pe culiar to some cult or special study ”. This little book is not a dictionary, because to be such it should con tain all the words of some language, which it does not. This is an attempt to furnish students of Theosophical lit erature who are not Sanskritists with a glossary— nothing else—of the many Sanskrit and other strange words found so often in books and writings published and written by mem bers of our Society. Readers will therefore understand that we are not offering them a Sanskrit grammar, nor a book that will make clear all that they wish to know about the proper pronunciation of Sanskrit words. The latter would be, in our opinion, a hopeless work, and is not attempted. Rarely is even a dictionary complete; and we do not claim that this Glossary contains every foreign word which may be met in Theosophical books, but it has all the important ones. In order to give some notion of the proper pronunciation of Sanskrit, but only by way of a guide and not as an au thority, a short table is put at the end of these paragraphs, which if carefully studied will help readers to come some what near to the right sound.

Such devotional service causes the heart to become softenned by various tastes and it is called bhava. Notes: In the second wave of the Eastern division of Sri Bhaktirasamrta sindhu three divisions of bhakti have been described-(1) sadhana bhakti, (2) bhava bhakti and (3) prema bhakti. Sadhana bhakti is of two types-(1) vaidhi bhakti and (2) raganuga bhakti. Raganuga bhakti is also of two types-(1) kamanuga and (2) sambandhanuga. All of this has been thoroughly analyzed up to this point. Now in this third wave the explanation of Bhava bhakti begins. The symptoms of uttama bhakti are that it is favorable to Krsna's pleasure (anukulya) and it involves the culture of activities in relationship to Krsna (Krsna anushilana).
