Alumitetm Repair Almost Any Metal With Just a Propane Torch The original fluxless brazing rod for the fabrication, maintenance and repair of Aluminum alloys, Zinc Diecast, Pot Metal, and White Metal. Alumitetm is also an excellent general purpose high strength solder. Repairs aluminum boats, engine heads, motor housings, power mowers, farm and dairy equipment, blocks and crankcases, vacuum cleaners, carburetors, gears and pumps, jigs and fixtures, dies and matchplates, trophies and ornaments, models and patterns, antique car parts, windows and doors, and aluminum boat propellers. This can be done simply and effectively without flux using Alumitetm. IT IS ONLY NECESSARY TO HEAT THE ALUMINUM TO A TEMPERATURE THAT WILL MELT THE END OF THE SOLDER STICK AS IT IS DRAWN ACROSS THE HEATED ALUMINUM SURFACE. The solid end of the stick punctures and loosens the oxide and allows the solder to creep underneath. Many types of constructions are possible using this fluxless technique; however, it should be noted that THE ALUMINUM SURFACE MUST BE ACCESSIBLE TO STROKING BY THE Alumitetm Otherwise, use Kapp Lunar Flux to remove oxide and draw the solder into blind joints. T JOINTS For maximum strength, tin both members as described above and bring together. Heat the parts and flow a fillet of solder into the intersection. Run the solid end of the solder stick through the molten fillet to remove any trapped oxide. In many instances, adequate strength can be obtained without pre-tinning. Fillets are made by running solder along set-up members where contact is desired, letting the heat from the aluminum, NOT THE FLAME, melt the solder. When the members are not pre-tinned, the fillets alone support the joint load as the members are not joined to each other, but only to the fillets. BUTT JOINTS Ends are beveled and brought together. Follow tinning procedure, stroking both beveled surfaces of the joint (with tinned groove) with Alumitetm. LAP JOINTS Parts can be tinned and slid together while solder is still molten, or a generous fillet of solder can be applied to the edges of the lap joint, making sure of tinning by running stick through molten solder. MITERED JOINTS IN WINDOWS, DOORS, SCREENS, FRAMES Material is solidly jigged. A neutral flame is played over the joint area until Alumitetm will melt when drawn across the joint. Make sure of tinning action by running solid end of solder stick through molten solder deposit. After tinning, the joint may be built up and finished as desired. These joints are stable in the presence of humidity and have remained in perfect condition after many years of exposure. REPAIR AND CHANGE DESIGN OF ALUMINUM MATCH PATTERNS AND DIES The section to be worked is cleaned by filing or grinding, then tinned by heating the aluminum to a temperature that will melt the solder when rubbed on. When tinning, the Alumitetm rod should be kept out of the flame, letting the heat from the aluminum melt the solder. Build up with a soft flame. Pre-heating the entire match plate of the die to approximately 600oF facilitates the operation. TO WELD ZINC BASE CASTINGS WITH AlumitetmRemove plating, natural oxide, or foreign matter from surfaces to be joined. "V" out fracture and set up job solidly. Use #1 or #2 tip to pre-heat area surrounding fracture. Weld is then made by heating fracture directly with neutral flame until surface of base metal can be broken by touching it with Alumitetm rod. KEEP ROD AWAY FROM FLAME AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE WHEN STARTING WELD. Continue welding fracture by puddling the solder in the base metal. NEVER PLUNGE INTO WATER TO COOL. Finish as desired. TO WELD WHITE METAL WITH AlumitetmClean plating or scale from surface to be welded. "V" out fracture and set job up solidly. Pre-heat generally with neutral or acetylene flame. Heat directly until parent metal starts to melt, then dip solder rod in and out of molten puddle to desired build-up. STRIPPED THREADS Drill old threads out over size so when new fillet is added all drilling and tapping will be done in Alumitetm. This will make it easier to work with and will increase strength. After drilling, heat base metal from bottom of hole, up. Tin rod into wall of hole beginning at bottom and work up. Fill hole, cool, drill and tap as needed. KEEP FLAME IN MOTION. ALWAYS USE NEUTRAL FLAME. NEVER PLUNGE INTO WATER. COOL SLOWLY. Alumite joints are permanent, corrosion resistant, & stronger than joints made with other solders. alumitedata 062802 Page 16-18 MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET Page 1 of 3 Kapp Alumitetm Solder for Aluminum, Diecast, Zinc Alloys, Pot Metal and White Metal Trade Name: Kapp Alumitetm Solder Composition: Proprietary Ref.
