By showcasing work across all genres, and by emphasising festival speakers p. 31 screen talks and premieres, programmes have explored a wonderful diversity of film and video work related to Palestine. Celebrating the successes of established directors, Festivals have also aimed to surprise with less familiar content – whether rare archive works, experimental interventions, or pre- release sneak-peaks. In this respect, 2012 is perhaps our most expansive and the 2012 london palestine film festival is made exciting programme to date. possible through the support of the following funding and programme partners: The 2012 Festival maps nearly a century of filmmaking in Palestine. The latest Palestinian works include Opening Night premiere, Man Without a Cell Phone by Sameh Zoabi, and psychological drama Last Days in Jerusalem by Cannes-awardee Tawfik Abu Wael. The past is well served here too with a rare chance to find Palestine in the British imperial film archives and an exclusive book talk by Ella Shohat on the history and politics of Israeli cinema. Key rediscoveries include Susan Sontag’s only documentary, Promised Lands, and a remarkable French-Maoist Palestine manifesto – L’Olivier. More contemporary work is on show with two screen events tracing new directions in Palestinian short filmmaking, and an exhibition of cutting-edge video art running alongside the film programme. Global engagements with Palestine are also focal this year, with recent work by artists including Ursula Biemann, Mike Hoolboom, and Travis Wilkerson. The programme then reaches “Beyond Palestine” with two screen events exploring regional issues and film practices through powerful works on Syria and Western Sahara. With more than 50 works by artists from 16 countries, and with daily opportunities to discuss material with a stellar cast of guest speakers, we hope you’ll find this year’s Festival a rewarding excursion through a century of film on Palestine!     500 DUNAM ON THE MOON a documentary by RACHEL LEAH JONES 500 DUNAM ON THE MOON a documentary by RACHEL LEAH JONES SYNOPSIS 500 DUNAM ON THE M00N is a documentary about the Palestinian village of Ayn Hawd which was captured and depopulated by Israeli forces in the 1948 war and subsequently transformed into a Jewish artist's colony and renamed Ein Hod. It tells the story of the village's original inhabitants who, after expulsion, settled only 1.5 kilometers away in the outlying hills. Since Israeli law prevents Palestinian refugees from returning to their homes, the refugees of Ayn Hawd established a new village: “Ayn Hawd al-Jadida” (The New Ayn Hawd). Ayn Hawd al-Jadida is an unrecognized village, which means that it receives no services such as electricity, water, or an access road. Relations between the artists and the refugees are complex: unlike most Israelis, the residents of Ein Hod know the Palestinians who lived there before them, since the latter have worked as hired hands for the former. Unlike most Palestinian refugees, the residents of Ayn Hawd al-Jadida know the Israelis who now occupy their homes, the art they produce, and the peculiar ways they try to deal with the fact that their society was created upon the ruins of another. It echoes the story of indigenous peoples everywhere: oppression, resistance, and the struggle to negotiate the scars of the past with the needs of the present and the hopes for the future. Addressing the universal issues of colonization, landlessness, housing rights, gentrification, and cultural appropriation in the specific context of Israel/Palestine, 500 DUNAM ON THE M00N documents the art of dispossession and the creativity of the dispossessed.

The films are many and the project is ongoing. Why film? Film is often an extraordinarily effective tool. I found that many students in my classes seemed more visually literate than print literate. Whenever I showed a film, they would remember the minute details, characters names and sub-plots. Films were accessible and immediate. Almost the whole class would participate and debates about the film’s meaning were lively. Film showings also improved attendance at teach-ins. At the Truro, Massachusetts, Library in July 2014, the film Voices Across the Divide was shown to the biggest audiences the library has ever had, even though the Wellfleet Library and several churches had refused to allow the film to be shown. Organizing is also important. When a film is controversial, as many in this pamphlet are, a thorough organizing effort including media coverage will augment the turnout for the film. Many Jewish and Palestinian groups list films in their resources. This pamphlet lists them alphabetically, and then by number under themes and categories; the main listings include summaries, to make the films more accessible and easier to use by activist and academic groups. 2 1. 5 Broken Cameras, 2012.

While the story of armed Palestinian resistance is known, the equally important history of nonviolent resistance is largely untold. Perhaps the best-known example of nonviolent resistance during the mandate period, when the British exercised colo- nial control over historic Palestine, is the General Strike of 1936.     Photo exhibition « Breaking the Silence » December 1-17, 13h - 18h, 1030 Bxl, Les Halles (Rue Royale Sainte-Marie 22) Decembre 9, 2011 : after visiting the exhibition, we met Amira Hass, an Israeli journaliste Breaking the Silence has broken the silence but also the conventional methods of industrial information. Breaking the Silence’s method of collecting information finally verifies what the « respectable » media have never stopped denying : Palestinian information. After living in Gaza, the journalist and writer Amira Hass came to live in the West Bank, where she writes for the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz about life under the Israeli occupation. She is the only Israeli Jewish journalist who has been living for 17 years in the Occupied Territories among Palestinians and who lived there during the Second Intifada. She has written two books based on her successive experiences : Drinking the Sea at Gaza: Days and Nights in a Land under Siege (Owl Books, 2000) ISBN 0-8050-5740-4, and (with Rachel Leah Jones) Reporting from Ramallah: An Israeli Journalist in an Occupied Land (Semiotext(e), 2003) ISBN 1-58435-019-9 For years, she has been focussing on describing the policy of demographic separation and of closure that has been going on since 1991 – which has resulted in draconian restrictions on the Palestinians’ freedom of movement. Amira is going to tell us about how she sees the important work done by « Breaking the Silence ».
