We hope that this Services Guide will be a useful resource for both residents and visitors to the Goyder region. Email : [email protected] See also Concessions, Rates. 1 Updated May 2017 AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS Australia Day Awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year are presented at community events held on Australia Day. Nominations are called in early September for the four Wards and will be received up to the first week in November (Check at Council offices or Council’s website for the closing date). Nomination forms are available from the Council offices and/or can be downloaded from Council’s website. B BABY CHANGE FACILITIES Burra: Located in the Mary Warnes Room, Market Square (next to the Burra & Goyder Visitors’ Centre). Open Mon-Fri 9.00 am-5.00 pm, Weekends 10.00 am-4.00 pm. Eudunda : Located in South Terrace (opposite Eudunda Hotel/Motel). BACKYARD BURNING See Permits. BADGE DAYS See Permits. BARBECUES Burra : 2 electric barbecues at the Thomas Pickett Reserve, Burra Creek (opposite Paxton Square Cottages). 1 electric (coin operated) barbecue at the Burra Creek Reserve, adjacent to the Senior Citizens’ display garden. Eudunda : 2 free electric barbecues in Centenary Park gardens in the centre of Eudunda. Terowie : 1 Electric barbecue located in Pioneer Park, Main Street (next to the Playground), North Terrace Booborowie : 1 Electric barbecue located in Booborowie Recreation Ground, North Terrace (next to swimming pool). Mount Bryan : 1 Electric barbecue located in Sir Hubert Wilkins Reserve, Railway Parade Robertstown: 1 Electric (coin operated) barbecue located in Park, Commercial Street, next to the Community Centre. The Council area is divided into 4 Wards – Hallett, Burra, Robertstown and Eudunda. Local Government elections are held every four years. Council Elected Members Refer to list on page 20. Council Staff Refer to list on page 19. Council Meetings Meetings commence at 1.00 pm, with public question time being allocated between 1.00 pm – 1:30 pm. Council meetings are normally held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month commencing at 1.00 pm in the Council Meeting Room, Burra. The public are welcome to attend all Council meetings. Committees and Working Parties Council Committees and Working Parties meet regularly to discuss various issues and to make recommendations to the full Council. Meeting Agendas/Minutes Agendas and Minutes are available for viewing and/or purchase from the Council offices and are also posted to Council’s website. 5 Updated May 2017 Council Logo The logo concept depicts the iconic farmhouse ruin and the rolling hills of the Goyder Region. The farmhouse ruin is a reflective historic legacy of the region’s agricultural progress and its relationship with Goyder’s Line. The colour palette of the rolling hills reflects the changing seasonal landscape across the region and has been given a modern touch with stylised illustration. The early European settlers in the Colony of South Australia brought with them much faith. Faith in a new beginning; faith in political and religious freedom; faith in a better future for their children. As still evidenced by the many churches and chapels that enhance the towns, villages and countryside of the Clare Valley they brought with them implicit faith in Christianity. This was a diverse faith as many settlers, being free to do so, followed the beliefs of their past experiences. Whilst some of the diversity has lessened, much remains and is evidenced by the variety of church buildings remaining. A Church Lost - Wesleyan Chapel, later Methodist Church, Penwortham c.1890 In the vey early times these were simple, humble gathering places but as fortunes improved more substantial structures were built. In this Winter 2010 edition of our Newsletter we look at some of those that have been lost and some of those that have been converted. The churches, lost, converted or remaining and the congregations that have gathered within them over the past 160 years are a vital part of our history and heritage. SUMMARY Street Trees in Eudunda 2 Oxigen Landscape Architects June 2006 Introduction This report has been prepared to assist in the identification of street trees in Eudunda, their management and recommendations for replacement if appropriate. It provides suggestions for each street and a list of suitable species that can be trialled in addition to those currently found in the town. The report was prepared by Oxigen Pty Ltd, Landscape Architects for the Regional Council of Goyder. The plant descriptions and some images are taken from “Shrubs and Trees for Australian Gardens”, by E.E. Lord, “Encyclopaedia Botanica”, “Gardener’s Companion to Eucalypts”, by I. Holliday and G. Watton, “Eucalypts of South Australia” and the “Flemings Nurseries” website. The photographs of the existing street trees were taken in May 2006. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Like other towns in S.A’s midnorth, Eudunda’s early settlers were quick to clear native vegetation in the district to provide timber for building and firewood. Having compiled the book “Redruth Cornwall to The Burra SA”, I wish to stress the importance of compiling family historic records. Following the publication of my book, I was invited to an annual get-together by the “Genealogy Society of South Australia”, of those who published family histories during the year. They commented on each particular publication, offered helpful advice, and stressed the importance of such records, not only of the family records but the inclusion of the early development of the area of white settlement. The period we are looking at is from about late 1840’s, South Australia was proclaimed in 1836 and records were not very meticulously kept in those early years. Burra was the largest town outside of Adelaide at that time in South Australia. Many came from Cornwall in particular to work in the mine, but sought to find a livelihood in other industries such and farming and grazing. As the Humphrys book links with the Thomas history it fills a valuable record of that branch of the family. Of course each book follows a particular line of a family such as the Thomas descendants, so this researches the Humphrys family from 1717, for which they were fortunate to be able to trace that far back.
