    First Capitals of Armenia and Georgia: Armawir and Armazi (Problems of Early Ethnic Associations) Armen Petrosyan Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Yerevan The foundation legends of the first capitals of Armenia and Georgia – Armawir and Armazi – have several common features. A specific cult of the moon god is attested in both cities in the triadic temples along with the supreme thunder god and the sun god. The names of Armawir and Armazi may be associated with the Anatolian Arma- ‘moon (god).’ The Armenian ethnonym (exonym) Armen may also be derived from the same stem. The sacred character of cultic localities is extremely enduring. The cults were changed, but the localities kept their sacred character for millennia. At the transition to a new religious system the new cults were often simply imposed on the old ones (e.g., the old temple was renamed after a new deity, or the new temple was built on the site or near the ruins of the old one). The new deities inherited the characteristics of the old ones, or, one may say, the old cults were simply renamed, which could have been accompanied by some changes of the cult practices. Evidently, in the new system more or less comparable images were chosen to replace the old ones: similarity of functions, rituals, names, concurrence of days of cult, etc (Petrosyan 2006: 4 f.; Petrosyan 2007a: 175).1 On the other hand, in the course of religious changes, old gods often descend to the lower level of epic heroes. Thus, one may argue that Global Studies and Globalistics can well be combined with Global History and Big History and such a multi- disciplinary approach can open wide horizons for the modern university education as it helps to form a global view of various processes.

[ Note - the (DNA) citations are only partial / general indicators.] There were altogether really quite a few (R1a1a1, Z280 Northern variants ) Baltic Satem speaking cultures - the early West Baltic ( Pamariai / Bay Coast ) Barrow culture in the West - the growing Middle Dnieper in the middle / with a Dnieper-Desna variant - and the geographically immense East Baltic speaking Fatyanovo-Balanovo cultures, settled among (and eventually merging with, among others) neighboring Finno-Ugrics ( N1c1) and Narva substratum on territory in the North & East - up to the Ural mountains and Kama-Volga rivers. A later phase of the Catacomb ( MVK - Mnogovalikovo ) & Pit- grave ( Poltavka ) influenced border Fatyanovo-Balanovo was the Corded Ware Abashevo culture. To the South of these bordered complexes like Sosnica, that later became the Baltic-type Milograd & Bondarikha ( > Jukhnovo ) cultures.

Corded Ware, Fatyanovo and Abashevo culture sites on the flood-plain of the Moskva River. Sprawozdania Archeologiczne 65, 415–426. This article presents new evidence from excavations in the Moskva river valley, where Early Bronze Age sites have been found under alluvial sediments on the flood plain. The finds were identified to the Corded Ware, Fatyanovo and Abashevo cultures. Radiocarbon dates and stratigraphy demonstrate that these sites developed from the middle to the end of the 3rd millennium BC. Analysis of pollen identified ancient fields and provided a general picture of the proportion of wild and culture landscapes.     Eastern Europe within the Ancient World-Systems* Tatyana L. Shestova Eastern Europe is considered as a space of the world trade systems expan- sion/contraction process in the early world-systems from Chalcolithic to early Iron Age. The author identifies system-forming agents and six major periods in the development of the trade relations in the ancient world which involved East- ern Europe. The paper shows the relationship between the boundaries of early exchange systems and metallurgical provinces. Keywords: early world-systems, expansion/contraction of world-systems, East- ern Europe, system-forming subjects, the basic trade-system element, metallurgi- cal provinces, Balkan-Carpathian, Circumpontic, Trans Eurasian, Greek and Roman trade systems. In recent decades there have been many works devoted to the origin of the world econom- ic system and to the role of early civilizations in the formation of the foundations of long- distance trade (Frank 1993; Frank, Thompson 2005; Gills and Thompson 2006; Chase- Dunn and Manning 2002; Chase-Dunn et al. 2010; Chase-Dunn and Hall 1997; Hall et al. 2009; Abu-Lughod 1989; Barfield 1989; Grinin, Ilyin, and Korotayev 2012; Grinin and Korotayev 2012). Unfortunately, the authors of the world-system approach – Andre Gunder Frank, Barry Gills, William Thompson, Janet Abu-Lughod, Christopher Chase- Dunn, Thomas Hall and others – commonly pay little attention to the regions located in the north of the early civilizations and, in particular, to Eastern Europe. For example, Frank and Thompson excluded Eastern Europe from the list of areas of economic expansion, when highlighting their indicators of the world-systems ‘expansion/contraction’ in the ear- ly Iron Age (Frank and Thompson 2006: 144).

    Indo-European Expansion Cycles Axel Kristinsson The Reykjavik Academy http://www.axelkrist.com/ Hypothetical solutions to the ‘homeland problem’ in Indo- European studies are often hampered by the lack of clear causes for the expansion of the IE languages. The author uses a recently developed model of expansion cycles to address this situation. The model suggests that cultures comprised of several autonomous political units often constitute competitive systems which, through their inner dynamics, produce massive expansions after some centuries of competition. Using this model, the author finds that an intermediary solution between the Kurgan and Neolithic hypotheses seems to best fit the evidence. This suggests IE origins on the forest-steppe around the 4th millennium BC in the Cucuteni-Tripolye culture. Instead of seeing the wide distribution of Indo- European (IE) languages as a problem, we can see it as evidence. Something happened, probably around the 4th millennium BC, that caused the IE languages to start spreading over most of Europe and much of Asia, eventually to spawn the languages spoken by almost half of mankind. Whatever it was, it must have been quite unusual, spectacular and historically important. This importance has nothing to do with the IE languages as such. IE expansion did not take place because of some grammatical features of these languages; their spread is simply the smoking gun, the remaining evidence of an expansion that started around five or six thousand years ago. From this point of view, it is quite irrelevant what language was spoken at the core of the expansion; what matters is that the language dispersal that took place is evidence of an expansion that profoundly affected the societies involved.

Here, we report new genome-wide sequence data from 30 individuals north of this area, from the understudied western part of present-day Russia, including 3 Stone Age hunter-gatherers (10,800 to 4250 cal BCE) and 26 Bronze Age farmers from the Corded Ware complex Fatyanovo Culture (2900 to 2050 cal BCE). We show that Eastern hunter-gatherer ancestry was present in northwestern Russia already from around 10,000 BCE. Furthermore, we see a change in ancestry with the arrival of farming— Fatyanovo Culture individuals were genetically similar to other Corded Ware cultures, carrying a mixture of Downloaded from Steppe and European early farmer ancestry. Thus, they likely originate from a fast migration toward the northeast from somewhere near modern-day Ukraine—the closest area where these ancestries coexisted from around 3000 BCE.

OLDEST INFORMATION References to deposits of some kind of fossil resins in the Northern Pontic Area and data on their excavation, often connected with their long-distance export, appeared in the literature already in antiquity. According to W. Tuckij [Tuckij 2005: 37] already Pliny the Elder mentioned amber deposits in Scythia in the first century AD. Some historians claim that ancient Greeks had quite precise knowledge on the places where amber occurred in the Northern Pontic Area [Evans 1914: 44-45; Tuckij 2005: 37]. There are also Early Medieval records of the common use of amber on the Dnieper [Evans 1914: 44, where he cites the opinions of Prof. V. Chvojko of Kiev].
