Welcome to Boulia Camel Races, a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Outback Queensland’s local culture and community, and hopefully explore some of the superb tourism experiences on offer here.

The impacts of the pandemic have provided incredible challenges, but thanks to the hard work of Queenslanders our state was one of the first to put in place a COVID Safe Event Framework which paved the way for events such as this one to take place.

The is proud to support Boulia Camel Races, through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program and it is a feature on our It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. Events are an important part of our state’s economic recovery from the pandemic because they attract visitors to the region which stimulates the local economy and supports local jobs. Events are also an important opportunity for communities, friends, families and visitors to come together, creating community pride and reconnecting us.

Congratulations to the event organisers and all those involved in organising this event – may it be a successful one. THE CRACK UP SISTERS FRIDAY NIGHT Welcome to Boulia Camel Races for the first time... The Crackup Sisters from Winton. Born and bred in Winton, the Ruth Sisters grew up with dirt on their faces, warm hearts and mischievous minds – chucking cartwheels and creating routines on the hills hoist. Mum Ruth, a dancer twirling her way around the globe, Dad Ruth, a truckie who could arm wrestle and drag race with the best. The sisters were chips off the old block. S.T (the oldest of the sisters) was left to raise the rabble of tackers in Winton, and The Crackup Sisters were born. Expect some aerial circus antics, whip cracking, knockabout acrobatics and gags that you’d never see coming! See their shows Saturday and Sunday at the ‘Homestead’, plus join them on the racetrack between camel races for some fun and games. LUKE GEIGER AND BAREBACK SATURDAY NIGHT Luke began performing at a young age on the Country Music Festival Circuit throughout Qld and the NT. His reputation for high energy performances has taken him to locations throughout the United States and Australia. He took his original music to the US, where he recorded and produced his songs with Kenny Royster (Hurricane - Luke Combs) in Nashville. Luke has new original music in the making, with plans to record and release, inspired by his passion for country music. See Luke and the band on stage Saturday night. LINC PHELPS FRIDAY NIGHT With inspiration from blues and soul pioneers such as Delbert McClinton and Bonnie Raitt, Linc has developed a truly authentic sound that has seen him attract a chorus of fans over his decade long career. His commanding voice prevails over a solid blues feel and wearing his heart on his sleeve, he brings a rock star swagger to every live performance. See Linc on stage Friday night. Charlie is a Boulia local and his ‘mum’ is camel trainer Dannileah. He is full height at 6yrs, but has and been coming to the races since he was little, having been found orphaned at 4 days old and Dannileah and Ronnie bottle-feeding him as their adopted ‘baby’. Charlie isn’t racing, he’s just here to cheer on his adopted brothers, but let’s be honest, he mostly comes for the perks… Charlie craves attention from tourists and he knows they bring his favourite treats: cappuccinos (one sugar please), coke and lollies! He shares kisses and even poses for photos – no kidding! Cross the racetrack to meet Charlie… he’s in the first yards you’ll find when you cross the track. (NOTE: Do not cross the track once race day has begun) SATURDAY RACING GUIDE

Meet our Race Caller Andrew Saunders How long have you been race calling Boulia Camel Races? I’ve been doing it since the very first races in 1997.

How did you get roped into it? It was Paddy McHugh first starting the camel races in Boulia and I got a call from John Tully at the Boulia hotel because I was doing the calling for the race meeting in Boulia and other race meetings around the north west.

How have things changed since the early days? The camel racing teams didn’t have racing colours back in the early days. The jockeys just wore a t-shirt and a vest over it, so I had to remember the t-shirt colours for the race calling. It’s made my job a lot easier since things have become more professional with racing colours. These days the camels rarely break and you can see they are lot better trained.

What’s it like being up there calling a race? The 400m in particular is very fast and so I’ve got to concentrate really hard as they are coming down the straight as there is not much room for error.

Do you have a stand-out memory? I’ve seen just about everything. One year a camel was about 100m in front and got near the finish line and just sat down. We’re all still talking about that one! ‘Old Reggie Boy’ was probably my favourite camel and the best I’ve ever seen. My best thrill was watching Wason win the Cup last Boulia Camel Races because it was a local win and they’d done so much work with that camel to get him there.

What’s your day job? Manager ABC Mount Isa

From the Boulia Camel Races Committee and all the cameleers thank you sincerely Andrew for your friendship and contribution to camel racing in Boulia! Our Judges Thank you to our local volunteer judges up in the tower: Brook McGlinchey, Robert Jensen, Frank Blacket, Adrian Wells and Sam Beauchamp. WITH THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS
