WUNDERLICH, 75334 Straubenhardt, Germany. Abstract: The fossil mygalomorph spiders (Araneae: Mygalomorpha) in Baltic and Do- minican amber are listed, a key to the taxa is given. Two species of the genus Ummidia THORELL 1875 (Ctenizidae: Pachylomerinae) in Baltic amber are redescribed, Clos- thes priscus MENGE 1869 (Dipluridae) from Baltic amber is revised, two gen. indet. (Dipluridae) fram Baltic amber are reported. The first fossil member of the family Micro- stigmatidae: Parvomygale n. gen., Parvomygale distineta n. sp. This spider is a member of the family Dipluridae (Funnelweb Mygalomorphs) and is redescribed in this paper; only juveniles are known. Two further species of Mygalomorpha are described from this kind of amber, these are members of the family Ctenizidae (Trapdoor spiders). - Fossil members of the Mygalo- morphae in Dominican amber were described by WUNDERLICH (1988). -

Hembree Trace fossils are useful for interpreting the environmental conditions and ecological composition of strata. Neoichnological studies are necessary to provide informed interpretations, but few studies have examined the traces produced by continental species and how these organisms respond to changes in environmental conditions. Spiders are major predators in modern ecosystems. The fossil record of spiders extends to the Carboniferous, but few body fossils have been found earlier than the Cretaceous. Although the earliest spiders were probably burrowing species, burrows attributed to spiders are known primarily from the Pleistocene. The identification of spider burrows in the fossil record would allow for better paleoecological interpretations and provide a more complete understanding of the order’s evolutionary history. This study examines the morphology of burrows produced by the mygalomorph spider Gorgyrella inermis and the araneomorph spider Hogna lenta (Arachnida: Araneae). -

The collection was started by Dr. L.H. Hale during 1970, and was resurrected and expanded from 1979 due to the foresight and energy of Dr “Jack” Tenorio, who also contributed a great number of specimens. Originally the collection was intended as an insect collection to assist identification of insects affecting agriculture, horticulture and silviculture in the Northern Marianas, and to contribute to the ability of pupils and students to learn more about the subject. During 2001 the collection was expanded to include all terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates, and a collection management protocol was established (see Appendices 1 and 2). The collection was originally owned by the CNMI Department of Land and Natural Resources , and was on loan to the NMC Entomology Unit for curation. During 2001 it was transferred to the NMC by agreement with Dr. “Jack” Tenorio, who emphasized the need to maintain separate teaChing material as well as identified specimens in the main collection. -

Maternally inherited bacterial endosymbionts such as Wolbachia can potentially have a major impact on the reproduction of their arthropod hosts. Most previous studies have focused on the effects on insects, but recent evidence demonstrates that the endosymbionts Wolbachia, Rickettsia, and Spiroplasma are also common in spiders. Such infections potentially explain observed characteristics of reproduction in this group such as skewed sex ratios or reported cases of parthenogenesis. Here we test spiders and a range of other arachnids for infection with another, more recently described maternally acquired endosymbiont, Cardinium. We present data from a survey of spiders and other arachnids collected in the field and obtained from museum collections. Infections with Cardinium are found to be very widespread, perhaps more so than in other arthropod groups.
