  • What Literature Knows: Forays Into Literary Knowledge Production
Contributions to English 2 Contributions to English and American Literary Studies 2 and American Literary Studies 2 Antje Kley / Kai Merten (eds.) Antje Kley / Kai Merten (eds.) Kai Merten (eds.) Merten Kai / What Literature Knows This volume sheds light on the nexus between knowledge and literature. Arranged What Literature Knows historically, contributions address both popular and canonical English and Antje Kley US-American writing from the early modern period to the present. They focus on how historically specific texts engage with epistemological questions in relation to Forays into Literary Knowledge Production material and social forms as well as representation. The authors discuss literature as a culturally embedded form of knowledge production in its own right, which deploys narrative and poetic means of exploration to establish an independent and sometimes dissident archive. The worlds that imaginary texts project are shown to open up alternative perspectives to be reckoned with in the academic articulation and public discussion of issues in economics and the sciences, identity formation and wellbeing, legal rationale and political decision-making. What Literature Knows The Editors Antje Kley is professor of American Literary Studies at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany. Her research interests focus on aesthetic forms and cultural functions of narrative, both autobiographical and fictional, in changing media environments between the eighteenth century and the present. Kai Merten is professor of British Literature at the University of Erfurt, Germany. His research focuses on contemporary poetry in English, Romantic culture in Britain as well as on questions of mediality in British literature and Postcolonial Studies. He is also the founder of the Erfurt Network on New Materialism.

“Supper at Emmaus,” by Matthais Stom, c.1600-52 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time + June 28, 2020 ENTRANCE “Come and Follow Me” 1. Come, be my light, be my voice to the nations. Be my hands, be my heart for the world. Would you go where I go? Where I lead, will you follow? Would you leave ev’rything for my sake? By the power of the Spirit, ev’ryone with ears to hear it will embrace the call to love within their heart. Refrain: If anyone would come and follow me, my disciple you would be. Leave the past behind, seek and you will find all you’re called to be. If anyone would come and follow me, know the truth will make you free. Give and you receive. Trust me and believe. Come and follow me. Text: Tom Franzak; b. 1954, © 1997, GIA Publications, Inc.Reprinted with permission under ONE LICENSE# A-718331 All rights reserved. FIRST READING—2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16A One day Elisha came to Shunem, where there was a woman of influence, who urged him to dine with her. Afterward, whenever he passed by, he used to stop there to dine. So she said to her husband, “I know that Elisha is a holy man of God. Since he visits us often, let us arrange a little room on the roof and furnish it for him with a bed, table, chair, and lamp, so that when he comes to us he can stay there.” Sometime later Elisha arrived and stayed in the room overnight.

Sermon #225 The New Park Street Pulpit 1 SATAN’S BANQUET NO. 225 A SERMON DELIVERED On SABBATH MORNING, NOVEMBER 28, 1858, BY THE REV. C. H. SPURGEON, AT THE MUSIC HALL, ROYAL SURREY GARDENS. “The governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and said unto him, every man at the beginning does set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but you have kept the good wine until now.” John 2:9, 10. THE governor of the feast said more than he intended to say, or ra- ther, there is more truth in what he said than he himself imagined! Ahithophel first presents the lordly dish of love and kind- ness to David; then afterwards that which is worse, for he forsakes his master and becomes the counselor of his rebel son. Judas presents first of all the dish of fair speech and of kindness; the Savior partook thereof, he walked to the house of God in company with Him and took sweet counsel with Him. But afterwards, there came the dregs of the wine—“He that eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.” Judas, the thief, betrayed his Master, bringing forth afterwards “that which is worse.” You have found it so with many whom you thought your friends.
