Consequently a gradual drop in the support and resources that the Journal had in the past enjoyed from the University has ensued. Faced with limited and decreasing resources, the reduction in the Journal‟s content was necessary to ensure that the quality of editing and reviewing was not compromised. This Journal‟s issue is thus quite late and smaller in content than its predecessors; for this we apologise. The Journal has had an excellent support from you, our contributors and readers; just as importantly it still enjoys the support of the crowd safety and security industries as demonstrated by the keen willingness of authors to have their work published on the electronic pages of the Journal and by the growing visits to the Journal‟s website by individuals working in these industries. A number of organisations, Higher Education institutions, and specialist national colleges have also requested to be placed on the Journal‟s database and to be alerted as new Journal issues become available. The fledgling, but now emerging discourses of crowd safety and protective security can only grow to meet the persistent demands for explanations of the practices in these expanding industries. Like in other social science discourses, the debate, which has already started (see Dr Clayton‟s article in this issue), will escalate as to whether the scientific school or the humanistic one provides better explanations. Irrespective of the direction this debate may take, whether these practices are viewed as scientific or cultural and artistic endeavors, the central task is to communicate them through publishing the nascent research of experienced student practitioners and contributions from concerned academics. As journal editors we intend to do this; more importantly, as editors of this Journal, we want this research to be published in the JCSSM. We are still driven by the vision to continue this work within the constraints of diminishing resources; and to continue publishing the Journal twice a year as originally planned. We owe this to you, our readers and contributors, and more than ever before, we seek, in these difficult times, your continuing help and support. The Journal seeks primarily to publish: a) Summarised and edited versions of practitioners‟ work-based projects. The aim is to share and disseminate the findings of these projects to a wider audience. Practitioners‟ projects are selected, not necessarily because of their methodological rigour or the significance of their findings, rather they are chosen because of the relevance and importance of their work to the current development in the industry. Although practitioners‟ projects are summarised and edited, the responsibility for the rigour of the research and the validity and reliability of the findings remains with the authors. b) Good quality well developed industry-based research articles after subjecting them to double blind reviews. In addition, the Journal will publish essays, discussion and research notes, book reviews, and commentaries. The overriding aim of the Journal is to contribute actively to the professionalisation of the crowd safety and security industry by creating a platform which encourages dialogue between the industry and academia, and promotes research and good practice. In apparent contrast to the risk-averse society of 21st Century Britain, these events appear to expose participants to situations of extreme danger thereby inviting litigation. A qualitative research approach was adopted where a purposive sample of key individuals involved in the management of these events were interviewed. The main findings show; crowd sizes have grown significantly, many injuries were sustained, lawyers are likely to focus their attention on these events unless safety shortcomings are addressed, the need to establish mandatory Safety Advisory Groups, reluctance on the part of Local Authorities and stakeholder agencies to intervene, and confusion among these agencies over their statutory responsibilities. These tentative findings suggest that stakeholder agencies should work together to ensure consistency in enforcing legislation that currently exists, and to lobby for new legislation; both are areas requiring further research. The threat comes not only from the rise of political movements that openly reject liberal democratic values, including the governing parties of Hungary and Poland, but also from the risk of creeping authoritarianism caused by a gradual decline in standards of governance and the weakening of important democratic underpinnings, such as the rule of law. Romania is a country of particular concern. Although it has earned international praise for its recent efforts to stamp out corruption, a detailed examination of Romania’s anti-corruption activities shows that they often provide convenient cover for acts of political score settling and serious human rights violations. The methods used show a considerable degree of continuity with the practices and attitudes of the communist era. The strong correlation between those targeted for prosecution and the interests of those in power is indicative of politicised justice. Cases have often been accompanied by campaigns of public vilification designed to maximise their political impact. Far from being above politics, Romania’s National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) is an active participant in its partisan struggles. Although the rule of law requires the justice system to work independently of government, there is clear evidence of collusion between prosecutors and the executive in Romania.

As in many places, the wartime damage was seized upon as the opportunity to replan, sometimes radically, at all scales from the City core to the county and region. The hierarchy of plans thus produced, especially those by Abercrombie, is often celebrated as ‘models’, cited as being highly influential in shaping post-war planning thought and practice, and innovative. But much critical attention has also focused on the proposed physical product, especially the seductively-illustrated but flawed beaux-arts street layouts of the Royal Academy plans. Reconstruction-era replanning has been the focus of much attention over the past two decades, and it is appropriate now to re-consider the London experience in the light of our more detailed knowledge of processes and plans elsewhere in the UK. This paper therefore evaluates the London plan hierarchy in terms of process, using new biographical work on some of the authors together with archival research; product, examining exactly what was proposed, and the extent to which the different plans and different levels in the spatial planning hierarchy were integrated; and impact, particularly in terms of how concepts developed (or perhaps more accurately promoted) in the London plans influenced subsequent plans and planning in the UK.

    ANDREAS HAGER Christian Rock Concerts as a Meeting between Religion and Popular Culture Introduction Different forms of artistic expression play a vital role in religious practices of the most diverse traditions. One very important such expression is music. This paper deals with a contemporary form of religious music, Christian rock. Rock or popular music has been used within Christianity as a means for evangelization and worship since the end of the 1960s.1 The genre of "contemporary Christian music", or Christian rock, stands by definition with one foot in established institutional (in practicality often evangelical) Christianity, and the other in the commercial rock music industry. The subject of this paper is to study how this intermediate position is manifested and negotiated in Christian rock concerts. Such a performance of Christian rock music is here assumed to be both a rock concert and a religious service. The paper will examine how this duality is expressed in practices at Christian rock concerts. The research context of the study is, on the one hand, the sociology of religion, and on the other, the small but growing field of the study of religion and popular culture. The sociology of religion discusses the role and posi- tion of religion in contemporary society and culture. The duality of Chris- tian rock and Christian rock concerts, being part of both a traditional religion and a modern medium and business, is understood here as a concrete exam- ple of the relation of religion to modern society. The study of the relations between religion and popular culture seems to have been a latent field within research on religion at least since the 1970s, when the possibility of the research topic was suggested in a pioneer volume by John Nelson (1976).

    ‘Till Martyrdom Do Us Part’ Gender and the ISIS Phenomenon erin marie saltman melanie smith About this paper This report represents the second publication in ISD’s Women and Extremism (WaE) programme, launched in January 2015 to fill a large blind spot in the evolution of the global extremist threat. This report also builds upon ICSR’s research into the foreign fighter phenomenonlxviii. Questions are now being posed as to how and why females are being recruited, what role they play within violent extremist organizations, and what tools will best work to counter this new threat. Yet very little work has been done to not only answer these questions but to build sustainable preventative measures. WaE serves to pioneer new research, develop global networks, seed local initiatives, and influence social media, in-line with work already being piloted by the ISD. About the authors Dr. Erin Marie Saltman is a Senior Researcher at ISD overseeing research and project development on Women and Extremism (WaE). WaE aims to fully analyse the radicalisation processes of women into violent extremist networks as well as increase the role women play in countering extremism. Erin’s background includes research and analysis work on both far-right and Islamist processes of radicalisation, political socialization and counter-extremism programmes. She regularly advises governments and security sectors across Europe and North America on issues related to online extremism and the role of the internet in radicalisation. Erin holds a PhD in political science from University College London. Melanie Smith is a Research Associate working on ISD’s WaE programme.

The Plaintiff is the spouse of the Decedent and the Personal Representative of the estate. Plaintiff is pursuing a wrongful death claim against the rock band, claiming the Defendant failed to cancel the concert due to the bad weather and failed to communicate weather conditions to concert goers.
