FEMA Recovery Efforts Continue on the Island with Funding Obligations for 155 Projects Release Date: April 21, 2020 GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – FEMA and the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience, or COR3, have obligated nearly $20.8 million in funds for 155 projects related to the recovery and reconstruction of Puerto Rico due to Hurricane María. These funds were obligated between April 10 and April 16 and represent the largest number of projects obligated in a given week this year. “Our commitment to the island’s recovery is not only evident in the unprecedent number of projects we are obligating each week, but in our staff’s dedication to the mission during the ongoing situation. We are determined to continue working to help rebuild a stronger, more resilient island, one project a time,” said Alex Amparo, Federal Disaster Recovery Coordinator for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. As the island continues to safeguard its residents with social distancing and self- quarantine measures, FEMA and COR3 remain focused on prioritizing obligations of funds to municipalities for eligible expenses to help communities recover. To date, over $6.6 billion has been approved for Puerto Rico under FEMA's Public Assistance program. The latest grants obligated are as follows: Nearly $7.6 million for repairs to parks and recreational facilities. Nearly $7.3 million for repairs to roads and bridges. Over $3.1 million for repairs to public buildings and equipment. Over $936,800 for emergency protective measures. Over $372,000 for public utilities. Nearly $3,600 to municipalities and government agencies for administrative costs. “Definitely, in these last few weeks, despite all the challenges we have faced, we can see from the number of projects with funding obligations that recovery work on the island has not stopped. We have been able to see how both the COR3 and FEMA teams have continued working to meet the established goals. Communication and coordination of work continue in order to keep Puerto Rico's recovery moving forward,” said Ottmar Chávez, Director for COR3. A total of nearly $2.8 million has been awarded to Patillas for repairs to parks and recreational facilities this month. Of these funds, over $610,000 were approved this week for repairs to a basketball court and baseball park in Sector Buena Vista, Barrio Guardaraya. Work at the baseball park includes repairs to the bleachers, locker rooms and dugout as well as repairs to the basketball court and its perimeter. Over the course of this month, 27 projects have been obligated to fund permanent work in this municipality. Among the obligations for repairs to roads and bridges this week, over $3.3 million were awarded to Salinas, with more than $955,600 for repairs to various streets in the Hucar Sector located in Barrio Aguirre. To prevent future damage, reinforced asphalt will be used, resulting in a fortified road and a more resilient community. Also, over $92,000 was approved for Orocovis to address hurricane-related damage on road PR-590 in Sector La Francia in Barrio Bauta Abajo. Work to be completed includes removal and replacement of asphalt road resurfacing, culvert repairs, repairs to the base of the roads and upstream debris removal. Funding for permanent work includes projects like roads, bridges, water control, buildings and equipment, utilities and park and recreation facilities as authorized under Section 406 of the Robert T. Stafford Act. Emergency protective measures are actions taken to eliminate or lessen immediate threats either to lives, public health or safety, or significant additional damage to public or private property in a cost-effective manner.
