Publication of the quarter

Parish Registers – A History and Guide; by Stuart A Raymond Are you puzzled about what is shown in Parish Registers? If so this is the book for you. It contains details about the origin of the registers, and why they began. In 1538 Thomas Cromwell issued injunctions which ordered parochial incumbents to keep one register where christenings, marriage and burials should be shown with the name and date they occurred. Both Catholics and Protestants started registers. There is full information on how the content of the church records developed over the years, and legislation which affected the entries. Hardwick’s Marriage Act in 1753 was to stop irregular and clandestine marriages which deprived clergy of income and ended the practice of common law marriage. There are chapters on indexes, associated documents, and the uses of Parish Registers for research. Price £5.95

Did you know?

About . Remains of Roman villas and brickfields were found on the slopes of Shotover. Once a which was approximately 15 square miles in area, established in Saxon times. The forest provided land used as a hunting ground for the Monarch.

The forest had deteriorated by 1660, and was no longer subject to Forest Laws. Shotover’s oaks were used during the Civil War as fortifications and fuel. For the next 250 years it was open heath and the flora was studied by local naturalists. In 1908 Rev.A H Johnson raised funds to buy part of Shotover for the University, this land was then leased to the City.

In 1940 – 1949 Tank training and grenade training for the war were done on Shotover. By 1952 the Oxford Preservation Trust had bought 180 acres, which were given to the City of Oxford as a permanent open space. Part of the land named Mary Sadler’s field was bought as a donation from Sir Michael Sadler a founder of the trust. In the 1970s the City began the restoration of important wildlife habitats.

Shotover is now used by many local residents for walking, cycling and picnicking. The views from the top extend across as far as Didcot and the Berkshire downs.
