The funding is ring-fenced, which means it can only be spent on the provision of PE and sport in schools. The Seaton Valley first and middle schools have pooled their money to achieve maximum impact and to ensure pupils across Seaton Valley have similar opportunities. In February 2014, the Prime Minister committed to continue the funding for the Sports Premium until 2020. He also clarified the purpose of the funding: To improve the quality of existing PE teaching, so that all primary pupils improve their health, skills and physical literacy and have a broader exposure to a range of sports. Increase the quality of initial teacher training in PE and sport. Schools to understand the value and benefits of high quality PE and sport, including its use as a tool for whole school improvement.     Great Strike of the Northumberland and Durham Coalfield in 1844 ‐ (Part 01 of 11) by Derrik Scott “Come Let us Reason Together” Introduction Of all the recorded strikes in the great Northumberland and Durham Coalfield from 1765 until the closing of the mines at the end of the twentieth century, certain strikes have been “famous” (or infamous, depending on one’s viewpoint) and have passed into mining folklore and legend. The earliest recorded strike was in 1765 when the miners struck over a clause in the Yearly Bond which meant that they would have to obtain a “leaving certificate” from their colliery manager before being employed at another mine. The miners, who were not unionised at that time, saw the implications and the power this would give the employers, so together, they struck work and stayed out for six weeks until the owners gave in. There was no trouble in the mining villages although Dragoons were drafted in “just in case”. The leaving certificate was dropped and was not heard of again. The next notable recorded strike was the Bindings Strike of 1810 when the owners wanted to change the date of binding from October to January. Finally the men agreed to be “bound” from April. Although there was no miners’ union, the men were united and solid in their resolve and finally won the day. The Great Strike of 1831 ended in victory for the miners. Under their leader, Thomas Hepburn, a union of Northumberland and Durham miners had been formed much to the annoyance of the coal owners.

    Seaton Valley Neighbourhood Plan Referendum Version May 2021 Seaton Valley Neighbourhood Plan: Referendum Version (May 2021) Foreword On behalf of Seaton Valley Community Council, welcome to the referendum version neighbourhood plan for our area. When we commenced work on the plan in 2015 our focus was on the protection of our Green Belt, affordable housing, economy, transport, infrastructure and our environment. The initial work on the plan focused on the concerns of the community in New Hartley around the proposed housing development in the village. Following the granting of planning permission for the development in New Hartley at appeal in September 2017, our work lost some of its momentum. In July 2017 Northumberland County Council took the decision to end work on the Northumberland Core Strategy and to prepare a local plan for the county. The Northumberland Local Plan is currently at examination. In early 2020, the council decided to recommence the work on the plan and that the focus of the plan should be the protection of the important open spaces in our villages. The council believes that the Northumberland Local Plan addresses many of the issues in the area around the protection of the Green Belt, future housing and employment sites, transport issues and the protection of the environment and communities. However, we wanted to ensure that the open and green spaces in our villages are also protected. We commenced consultation in February 2020 and invited residents for their views on which open spaces we should protect through the plan and why. We received a positive response and from that we created a background paper to explain the process that has led to the proposed local green spaces and protected open spaces that we have included.

    EDITORIAL By the time you read this our Conference will be over, and the Autumn session of meetings will be well under way. The Society continues to grow, and the various local groups are all flourishing. Various projects such as Census Indexing and M.I. Recording are proceeding, but more volunteers to assist in the work are always welcome. As mentioned in the last issue of the Journal, our Treasurer John Scott is retiring from the job after a stint of eight years, and in recognition of his long and devoted service he is to be made an Honorary Life Member of the Society. We were worried about finding a successor to take over from John, but fortunately a volunteer, Miss Cindy Winters, has come forward, and we wish her well in her new position. Liz Lyall, the prime mover in the organisation of our Annual Conferences, is also retiring, and we take this opportunity of thanking her for all the work she has put in to make our Conferences so successful. I trust that members will continue to submit articles and other items of interest for publication in the Journal. It is time we had a Durham parish in the `Know Your Parish' series: there have only been six (Medomsley, Heworth, Chester-le-Street, Washington, Tanfield and Hetton-le-Hole) since the series started more than eight years ago! During March to May 2015, Your Back Yard consulted local people through a survey of residents and public meetings in each village, plus discussions with organisations working in the area, engagement with the local schools, and detailed conversations with Seaton Valley Council. Village plans have been drawn up based on the views expressed in this consultation: this is the village plan for Seghill, which reflects feedback from local people and organisations that work in the village. It is not a legal document, but sets out some practical steps that can be taken to improve the village. People from the Seghill community can lead on some of them, while others will need to be led by Seaton Valley Council, working with local people. It is intended that the Plan can be used by local people and organisations to help in their planning and seeking support or funding for their activities. The results of the consultation for Seghill and the results from Seaton Valley as a whole, together with the Valley Wide Plan are available on request from Seaton Valley Council.
