Amen Well it is a new season, a new year in the life of the church. Advent, a season that is worshiped in a more solemn, quiet, less festive manor than other seasons in the church. There is no joyous Christmas music during the four weeks of advent. Advent is a time where Christians around the world commemorate the first coming of the messiah and our ardent anticipation of Christ’s second coming as Judge. Actually, the word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus which means “coming” or “Arrival”. Advent is a time to prepare for his coming. A time to look at our lives, a second chance to be the kind of person the lord knows we can be. The bible stories of John the Baptist are stories of preparation and transition. John has come to “Make Straight The Path”. To quote one of my favorite songs from the play Godspell “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord”. That is actually Mark chapter 1 verse 3, but I really liked Godspell. John the Baptist is a transition from the PROMISE of the Old Testament to the New Testament REALITY of Christ in the flesh. In Advent each year, we remember that reality and the new promise of his second coming. In Jeremiah, we heard God tell Jeremiah: “I Will Fulfill The Promise I Made To The House Of Israel And The House Of Judah” we also heard that god will have “A Righteous Branch Spring Up From David” This is the Messianic message told throughout the Old Testament, told by the Patriarchs and the Profits.

Advisor Professor Mandy Fox, M.F.A. Professor Kristine Kearney, M.F.A. Copyright by Sarah Sugarbaker 2009 Abstract In April of 2009 the Ohio State University Theatre Department produced Godspell, a musical originally conceived by John‐Michael Tebelak with music by Stephen Schwartz. This production was built and technically rehearsed in the Thurber Theatre, and then moved to the Southern Theatre in downtown Columbus, OH. As the scenic designer of this production I developed an environment in which the actors and director created their presentation of the text. Briefly, the director’s concept (Appendix A) for this production was to find a way to make the production relevant to the local population. Godspell centers around the creation and support of a community, so by choosing to reference the City Center Mall, an empty shopping center in downtown Columbus, the need for making a change as a community was emphasized. This environment consisted of three large walls that resembled an obscured version of the Columbus skyline, inspired by advertisements within the shopping center. Each wall had enlarged newspapers that could be seen under a paint treatment of vibrant colors. The headlines on these papers referenced articles that the local paper has written about the situation at the shopping center, therefore making the connection more clear.

Norman Jewison, 1973) is a hybrid which, though influenced yb Jesus films, also transcends them. Its rock opera format and its focus on Holy Week make it congenial to the adaptation of the Gospels and its characterization of a plausible, non-stereotypical Jesus capable of change sets it apart from the traditional films and aligns it with The Last Temptation of Christ and Jesus of Montreal. It uses its depiction of Jesus as a means not of reverence but of interrogation, asking him questions by placing him in a context full of overtones of the culture of the early 1970s, English-speaking West, attempting to understand him by converting him into a pop-idol, with adoring groupies among whom Jesus struggles, out of context, in an alien culture that ultimately crushes him, crucifies him and leaves him behind.

On one hand, these people could literally be Jesus, John, and the disciples, in a story updated to modern day New York. With this approach, their colorful outfits, face-painting, and childish antics truly puts into perspective how bizarre and radical Jesus’ actions must have been in first century Israel, and yet these people are filled with so much joy and happiness that, much like in The Apostle, we find their lifestyle contagious. Blizek Passion-ate Moments in the Jesus Film Genre Adele Reinhartz, Wilfrid Laurier University Introduction [1] From the very first known Jesus movie, called The Passion Play at Oberammergau (1898; cf. Kinnard and Davis: 20), to the upcoming Mel Gibson release, the events of Jesus’ passion – his betrayal, trials, condemnation and death – have been brought to life on the silver screen. This focus was a natural extension of the venerable Passion Play tradition, the dramatization of Jesus’ last days that was once a keystone of popular Christianity in Europe, and persists to this very day (Shapiro). The impulse to act out the life, and, especially, the death of Jesus likely goes back even further than the medieval Passion Play tradition to the earliest period of Christianity. The Gospels lend themselves to dramatic rendition; indeed, it is likely that the Gospels were written to be proclaimed aloud, from start to finish, to an appreciative audience, not to be savored silently or sampled selectively (Kelber). Indeed, some have argued that the Gospels themselves are extended and detailed scripts that provide not only words but also stage directions for full-fledged theatre productions (Brant). [2] The Passion has all the elements of classical tragedy: powerful characters, and a powerful plot filled with suspense and tension. But the centrality of the Passion to the Jesus film genre reflects not only the dramatic power of Jesus’ Passion but also its importance within the first-century Gospel traditions themselves.

Warm-up (10–15 minutes) • Begin the session by having the students share their analyses of TV and radio advertisements aimed at teens (from the third “Applying What You Have Learned” activity on page 213). Encourage the teens to evaluate the sort of messages these media are selling about/to teens and whether they enhance human worth and dignity. • Go on to ask the students to spend a few minutes counting their blessings. Have the students think of the many ways they have been blessed and then write them on a sheet of paper. If you wish, list the following ideas on the board to help the students along. • Count your blessings resulting from: a personal talent; being a member of your family; living where you do; being baptized in the Catholic faith; the troubles you’ve gone through; the friendships you have; the activities in which you’re involved; your pets. • When the teens finish writing, make sure they all have a solid list of blessings. To this end, I first conduct a dramatistic analysis of the crucifixion of Jesus, working to explicate its performativity. Viewing this performative event through the lens of the Grotesque, I then discuss its various grotesqueries, to propose the concept of the Grotesque Cross. As such, the term “Grotesque Cross” functions as shorthand for the performative event of the crucifixion of Jesus, as it is characterized by various aspects of the Grotesque. I develop the concept of the Grotesque Cross thematically through focused studies of representations of the crucifixion: the film, Jesus of Montreal (Arcand, 1989), Philip Turner’s play, Christ in the Concrete City, and an autoethnographic examination of Cross-wearing as performance. I examine each representation through the lens of the Grotesque to define various facets of the Grotesque Cross. iv For Drs. Answer from Stephen Schwartz: The main thing to remember is that the story of the show is that Jesus comes into a group of disparate and desperate individuals and leads them into becoming a community. The word "leads" is important -- he is the driving force in the show; therefore he needs to have the most energy, the most humor, and the most will- power of all the characters. He starts the games, he teaches the lessons, he motivates the action. When the show goes wrong it is usually because Jesus is played too reverently, standing off to the sidelines and watching beatifically as the rest of the cast clowns around. GODSPELL HISTORY Godspell was written in the 1970’s by award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz. It is based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew and tells the story of the life of Jesus. Set in a playground in a New Hampshire, New England style, the actors will tell the story of the parables from the early beginnings of the baptism through the crucifixion and resurrection. THE SONGS With great numbers like “Day By Day” and “Oh Bless the Lord My Soul” to the haunting lyrics of “By My Side” and “On the Willows,” Godspell is a musical event that will stay with you the rest of your life.
