The show opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in the Visual and Performing Arts Lab, located behind the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art at Carthage, 2001 Alford Park Drive. Additional shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Written by Schwartz, -‐ a Tony nominated composer, “Godspell” covers the teachings of Jesus Christ and his eventual death, as told he mainly through t Gospel of Matthew. The company joins Jesus in presenting -‐ well known biblical readings, including the parable of Lazarus, the parable of the Prodigal Son, and the Beatitudes. The company invites audiences to join its journey toward compassion, utilizing a score of jubilant music and whimsy that maintains the feeling of love even throughout its darker moments. Under Jesus’ guidance, those in the ragtag and unorganized ensemble learn to work together and love one another to create something for that will last eternity. Spanuello’s production takes a modern approach to the award-‐winning Broadway staple. The production begins with an ensemble of characters disconnected from one another, glued to their smartphones, laptops, and tablets. They ments start petty argu over social media and find themselves tormented by the addiction to their devices. John the Baptist then awakens the characters and invites them to experience the teachings of Jesus. John the Baptist, as well as Judas, is played by Jessica Cepolski ’18. By casting her, Spanuello defies gender norms and expectations of who the characters are and explores the dynamic between Jesus and Judas, his most problematic disciple. -‐ From its high energy numbers to its sentimental ballads, “Godspell” will leave audiences wanting to sing along.
