Sri Aurobindo: A Postmodern Sublime Poet Dr. Atal Kumar Among all the leading poets of the early twentieth century Indian English poets Sri Aurobindo is vibrant with the contemporary literary ethos–modernism vis-a-vis postmodernism. His modernism was not haunted by what T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound found during the First World War rather pressed by his inner urge of Sublime. Sri Aurobindo's Muse was drenched in the showers of Sublime. He had been a great Indian religious, philosophical and social thinker as well as postmodern sublime poet. The great spiritual master was born on 15 August 1872 in an aristocratic and anglicised family in Calcutta. Sri Krishnandan Ghose, his father, was among them who first went to England for his medical education and returned with anglophilic blood in his veins. Certainly, the early life of that mystic poet was moulded under the parasol of his father's anglicised habits, ideas and ideals. His father's anglophilic disposition induced him to keep his children away from the Indian ways of life. On the contrary Sri Aurobindo's mother Swarnlata Devi belonged to the clan of great Indian Renaissance man of the nineteenth century, Rishi Rajnarayan Bose. She was the adviser of the new composite culture of Indian soil. Dr. Krishnandan Ghose's inner temperament forced him to nurture him in English atmosphere and not from native ways and native language. As a result of that Sri Aurobindo along with his elder brothers Sri Manmohan Ghose and Sri Benoy Bhushan Ghose were admitted to Loreto Convent School at Darjeeling. -

Introduction The Asiatic Society, Kolkata. A toxic blend of coal dust and diesel exhaust streaks the façade with grime. The concrete of the new wing, once a soft yellow, now is dimmed. Mold, ever the enemy, creeps from around drainpipes. Inside, an old mahogany stair- case ascends past dusty paintings. The eighteenth-century fathers of the society line the stairs, their white linen and their pale skin yellow with age. I have come to sue for admission, bearing letters with university and government seals, hoping that official papers of one bureaucracy will be found acceptable by an- other. I am a little worried, as one must be about any bureaucratic encounter. But the person at the desk in reader services is polite, even friendly. Once he has enquired about my project, he becomes enthusiastic. “Ah, English language poetry,” he says. “Coleridge. ‘Oh Lady we receive but what we give . and in our lives alone doth nature live.’” And I, “Ours her wedding garment, ours her shroud.” And he, “In Xanadu did Kublai Khan a stately pleasure dome decree.” “Where Alf the sacred river ran,” I say. And we finish together, “down to the sunless sea.” I get my reader’s pass. But despite the clerk’s enthusiasm, the Asiatic Society was designed for a different project than mine. The catalog yields plentiful poems—in manuscript, on paper and on palm leaves, in printed editions of classical works, in Sanskrit and Persian, Bangla and Oriya—but no unread volumes of English language Indian poetry. In one sense, though, I have already found what I need: that appreciation of English poetry I have encountered everywhere, among strangers, friends, and col- leagues who studied in Indian English-medium schools. -

Perseus the Deliverer by Aurobindo Ghosh
DSE: Indian Literature I Perseus the Deliverer by Aurobindo Ghosh Part of the DSE Course for Sem II Students of Department of English, University of Calcutta ● Text: ○ ‘First Complete Edition’ of 1955. This is a text that appeared after Sri Aurobindo's death in 1950. The text is published by and printed at Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry. ○ Collected Poems and Plays, Vol I is the earliest available copy of the play in a book. The volume is the seventieth birth anniversary collection published in 1942, published by Nolini Kanta Gupta of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry. Strangely this volume was printed at Government Central Press at Hyderabad. ● Note on the text: ○ The editor of the 1942 volume states “The dramatic poem “Perseus the Deliverer” was written somewhere between the end of the nineties and the first years of the following decade.” ○ Further, the publisher of the 1955 volume notes “Perseus the Deliverer was originally published in serial form in the weekly Bande Mataram of Calcutta (1907).” However, the publisher also notes that two scnes Act II, scenes ii and iii were missing from the 1942 edition. and they were incorporated into the 1955 edition. Hence the 1955 text is considered the first complete edition. ● Issues: [Following should be taken as thought-prompts rather than fully developed critical arguments. Hence their value to be directly transferred to exam answers is quite minimal. More structured ones are indicated in the bibliography section.] ○ Aurobindo Ghosh vs Sri Aurobindo. For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Recounted Remembrances of Times Past: Relics of the Raj, Stayers-on and Anglicised Indians Abstract In urban folk narrative, somewhere between the 'urban legend', which is melodramatic fiction, and the ' family story', which is of interest only to the family, lies what I call 'hardened gossip': outright inventions, embroidered 'factual' stories and stray dicta that outlive the usual fate of ephemeral tittle-tattle. Across a fairly wide social ambit, these tales become set-pieces in 'standard conversations' when familiar topics arise (for example, childhood, servants, ghosts). I listened transfixed in my childhood to such talk on 'the Old Days and their Legacy' — that is the Aftermath of the British Raj. Here is something of what I heard. Anglophone in Colonial India, 1780-1913: a Critical Anthology
Introduction d D n 1799, a British o2cer took it upon himself to catalog and celebrate “the most distinguished men of the Asiatic society” of Calcutta. the society, then Ijust 0fteen years old, had already changed the landscape of European litera- ture, giving impetus to a new kind of orientalism in British poetry. British verse, imbued with orientalist tropes and themes, in its turn was shaping English lan- guage poetry written in India. At the beginning of this complex formation of literary culture, that same English o2cer—one John horsford, former fellow of st. Johns, Oxford—commemorated sir William Jones, the founder of the Asiatic society. Jones, horsford wrote, had been commissioned by Britannia herself to explore the “mystic mines of Asiatic Lore.”1 Horsford’s panegyric captured an important moment in the creation of English language letters, for Jones’s excursions into “Asiatic Lore” brought Europeans and north Americans access to Persian and sanskrit verse. Jones’s translations inlu- enced the English romantic poets and inspired Goethe and schiller, Emerson and thoreau. In the decades following Jones’s death in 1794, poets born in India, in turn, made poems shaped by Persian, sanskrit, and vernacular poetry as well as by the poetic practices of British romanticism. Over the course of the nineteenth century, the range of English language poetic production in India widened, draw- ing poets from varied backgrounds and moving into realms domestic, religious, and political. Anglophone Poetry in Colonial India, 1780–1913 traces these arcs of cultural exchange from the beginnings of English language literature in India through the long nineteenth century. -

K Student, BA Literature, KLE’s JT College, Gadag, Karnataka, India ABSTRACT The Indian Poetry in English started with verse romances, melody, and lyrics. The Indian Poetry matured in the mid 19th century. The famous poets were mainly from Bengal and most of them were highly educated. The poets were mainly influenced by Victorian and romantic strain. They started imitating the western poets like Keats, Eliot, Pound etc. Poets were influenced by culture, environment, tradition, struggle for Independence etc. Women poets like Toru Dutt and sarojini Naidu constituted a kind of watershed between the two phases, In that they have shared their Predecessor’s nostalgia and successor’s sense of crisis and quest of identity. To conclude, Indian English poetry is a mixture of Africa, America, British and Australian English. The poets being influenced by various conditions have contributed immensely to the field of English literature. KEYWORDS: Romanticism, Indianess, Socio-Religious, Influences INTRODUCTION The Indian English Poetry began with romanticism. It started with verse romances and lyrics written in romantic verse. The origin of Indian poets in English have shrouded the dim pre-history of the Indo-Western encounter centuries prior to the birth of derozio. The first of these two conditions, the Indianization of the English language, began much before the Anglicization of Indians. The Indians writing in English can be dated from the landing of Vasco Da Gama in kerala in 1498. -

The story of the growth and development of Indian poetry in English is one of tradition and experiment, convention and revolt. The most remarkable thing about this genre is that in the course of its development it has not been an imitation of English poetry or aiming at the nearness of English poetry rather it has “developed into an independent tradition that thrives on the meeting of two cultures, the Indian and English”, remarks Professor V.K. Gokak in his article “Indian Women Poets in English”.
