The opening of our major traveling exhibition Warhol and the West was a great party. Even Andy Warhol himself (played skillfully by Alan Sanders) made an appearance. The celebrations will continue through our annual Cowboy Festival and Symposium when we will welcome Andy’s nephew James Warhola to The Booth. James wrote and illustrated the book depicted on our cover from his remembrances of visiting his uncle in New York City when he was a boy. And, yes, Andy’s original last name was Warhola. He dropped the “a” when he first moved to New York City after college to pursue a career as an illustrator, believing it sounded “too ethnic.” During his visit, James will talk about his famous uncle in two different sessions, but he will also discuss his own artwork and read or draw portions of his book for families visiting the McNair Store during the Cowboy Festival and Symposium at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm on Saturday, October 26.

While much of our focus is on Warhol, we do have two great photography exhibitions on view. Every fall we look forward to the opening of the Booth Photography Guild Annual Exhibition in Borderlands Gallery. I am always eager to see the new and different ways photographers are pushing the boundaries of the art form. Yet, I also marvel at some of the stunningly simple images that without much enhancement can also stop you in your tracks. Speaking of simple, our Lonesome Dove photography exhibition currently on view has a number of simple, yet highly effective images that convey the bond between men, the spirit of the West and their impending mortality. Bill Wittliff, the photographer who shot these great images passed away earlier this year, but his images of Gus and Call will preserve the Texas spirit and his legacy for generations to come.

Booth Photography Guild Annual Exhibition Through November 10 This juried exhibition showcases works of fine art photography by members of the Booth Photography Guild. The Photography Guild meets monthly for educational programing and fellowship. 16th Annual Kid’s Cowboy Up! November 12, 2019 - January 5, 2020 As part of the Museum’s outreach programing with the Boys & Girls Club of Bartow County and the Hands of Christ After School Program, this exhibition features artwork created over the previous year in a variety of media. Join these young artists on November 21st for a family friendly opening.

Lonesome Dove: Photographs by Bill Wittliff Through February 9, 2020 First aired in 1989 on CBS, the miniseries “Lonesome Dove” continues to capture audiences today. Bill Wittliff, the screenwriter who brought Larry McMurty’s award winning book to life, was also a renowned photographer. He documented the filming of the series with his camera. Visitors to the exhibition will encounter 55 of his iconic sepia toned photographs.

Tickets are available for purchase for the Cowboy Festival & Symposium Featured Entertainer concert starring the Sons of the Pioneers with Roy “Dusty” Rogers, Jr., on October 26 at 7:00 pm at The Grand Theatre. For more than 85 years, Sons of the Pioneers have performed the music of the American West. Their signature songs include “Cool Water,” ”Ghost Riders in the Sky” and “Tumbling Tumbleweed.” Tickets are $26.75 for members and $37.45 for not-yet-members. Prices include taxes and fees.
