If or when this letter appears I am rather expecting the normal and period spelling of cyclecar as one word to be replaced by the hyphenated cycle-car, which has ap- peared in several articles in The Bulletin recently. 37 My Morgan, by John Evans Then one day I realised that I was getting older; I read with interest Parky’s ode Soon I’d be quite past it and thought “Does he mean me?” So I must get much bolder! but as always, there is a tale I called this chap and told him which I’ll tell for all to see. I’m coming for my trike I’ll take it on my trailer Yes, I own a Morgan no matter what it’s like. For forty years it’s not been seen Fifty quid it cost me I now had a rolling chassis when I was young and keen. and half decent body frame, But the body was a gonner but I’m of limited ability and the rad was near its end, so further problems came. and the friendly local rad-man I found a body builder, said two hundred quid to mend. a man of high renown Now I was newly married, and all enquiries told me and with mortgage, always broke, he was the best in town. so much for one component He said he’d do the job in weeks, well… it could have been a joke! and it needn’t cost me dear, For several years she sat there, But as the weeks turned into months I ran her now and then the months became a year! but slowly things got better, then I really got the yen. So yes I own a Morgan, I met a Mog Club member She’s in my garage once again, (I will not give his name) Just a few more parts are needed Who said he’d do a re-build and I shall not search in vain. and it seemed he knew the game. At last I feel I’m nearly there but I’m now an O.A.P. This chap stripped down my Morgan Will I live to drive my dream? and then he sent a quote We’ll just have to wait and see! I was not at all disheartened in fact I liked what he had wrote. So thank you Mr Parkinson I told him to get on with it your words were nicely timed, and sent some cash for parts they’ve stirred me into action At first he made good progress (but yours were better rhymed) but then in fits and starts. A series of misfortunes Oh yes; that rad repair; then befell my new found friend. Two hundred quid I couldn’t stand. He lost his wife, his home, his health, Know what it cost me in the end? there seemed to be no end. Two and a half grand! He was always optimistic, said he’d be getting on with it The moral of this story is that But a call a few months later If you have a Mog, found another crisis hit. use it, drive, enjoy it Wheels went for powder coating even if it is a ‘dog’. Never to return, And if you feel you must rebuild, Had other parts gone missing? Don’t leave it to restore. Would I ever learn? Not only may it be too late, (If you now know who he is It’ll cost you ten times more! Don’t persecute this guy ‘cos there, but for the grace of God, could well go you or I )

44 HENRY LAIRD Henry Laird was a famous driver of Morgan Three-Wheelers in the 1920/30s who used his Morgans for racing, trials and rallies passen- gered by his wife “Barbie” or his brother Richard. His many achievements are well documented in the excellent “Morgan Sweeps the Board” by Dr J. D. Alderson and D. M. Rushton. The late Richard Laird was a keen competi- tion rider and Brough owner, and his son Rory recently contacted Website and Public- ity Officer Ian Parkinson who passed him on to Registrar, Steve Lister, Rory Laird had in his possession some of Henry’s trophies Rory and Sheila with trophies which he wished to donate to the Club. A silver cigarette box, the Mobiloil Trophy, won by Henry as part of the Morgan Team of T Rhodes, H Laird and H C Lones at the 1933 Light Car Club event at Brooklands for sec- ond place in the Third British Relay Race. A silver-plated cigarette box for success in the 1934 Colmore Trophy Trial. A bronze medal. 1938 TT Race. H Laird (Morgan) 24th at 52.78 M.P.H. It is hoped to add these items to the display of M.T.W.C, trophies on show at Brooklands. In addition to the trophies, we were allowed to copy numerous pictures from the family photo album covering the various events in which the Lairds took part in either “Red” or “Yellow” as the competition cars were known. These will be lodged with the Club Library.
