206 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. FEBRUARY 5th, 1875. ROBERT ETHERIDGE, Esq., F.R.S., F.G.S., &c., Vice-President, in the Chair. The following Report was read by the Honorary Secretary :- REPORT OF THE GENERAL COMMITTEE FOR 1874. The General Committee have much pleasure in congratulating the Association upon the results of the past year. A considerable number of new Members have been added to the list, and several of these are already well known throughout the country, by their study and practice of Geological Science. There have been a few losses by death, and, if the number of those who have retired is somewhat more numerous than has been the case of later years, they consisted, with few exceptions, of Members whose interest in the proceedings of the Association was never very ardent. Members elected during 1874 49 Withdrawals 14, Deaths 4 . 18 Increase 31 The Census of the Association on the 1st January, 1875, gave the following results :- Honorary Members 12 Life Members. 42 Old Country Members 28 Other Members 257 339 The lamented death of Professor Phillips, reduces the number of Honorary Members to 12. A short notice of the sad occurrence, which deprived the Association of one amongst the most eminent 206 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. of its body, will be found in the forthcoming number of Vol. iv. of the" Proceedings." The financial position of the Association is very satisfactory, and the large number of Members now contributing has yielded a sum which amply provides for an increased expenditure, the benefits of which are shared by all. -
James Hutton's Reputation Among Geologists in the Late Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries

Celâl Şengör* İTÜ Avrasya Yerbilimleri Enstitüsü ve Maden Fakültesi, Jeoloji Bölümü, Ayazağa 34469 İstanbul, Turkey ABSTRACT A recent fad in the historiography of geology is to consider the Scottish polymath James Hutton’s Theory of the Earth the last of the “theories of the earth” genre of publications that had begun developing in the seventeenth century and to regard it as something behind the times already in the late eighteenth century and which was subsequently remembered only because some later geologists, particularly Hutton’s countryman Sir Archibald Geikie, found it convenient to represent it as a precursor of the prevailing opinions of the day. By contrast, the available documentation, pub- lished and unpublished, shows that Hutton’s theory was considered as something completely new by his contemporaries, very different from anything that preceded it, whether they agreed with him or not, and that it was widely discussed both in his own country and abroad—from St. Petersburg through Europe to New York. By the end of the third decade in the nineteenth century, many very respectable geologists began seeing in him “the father of modern geology” even before Sir Archibald was born (in 1835). Before long, even popular books on geology and general encyclopedias began spreading the same conviction. A review of the geological literature of the late eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries shows that Hutton was not only remembered, but his ideas were in fact considered part of the current science and discussed accord- ingly. -

Whenever the Newsletter came in the post I would always sit down with a nice cup of tea and enjoy reading about what was going on with the other PalAss members and feel a real connection to the community. This was particularly true during a postdoc position in Germany working in a mineralogy department; the PalAss Newsletter arriving in my pigeon-hole was a joyous triannual event, helping me to feel part of a larger network of palaeontologists with research values and interests more in line with my own than those of my immediate colleagues. It is very much down to previous Newsletter editors and contributors helping to draw together this focus that keeps us connected between Annual Meetings. This is no easy feat with an ever-expanding membership that grows globally each year. -

Published by HMSO in 1937 this work was to become one of the key texts for anyone carrying out research into the development of the Survey. One section, Appendix 2, is an invaluable reference list of those who served on the staff of the Survey between 1835 and 1935.The Prefatory Note in Flett's work acknowledges the contribution of Miss E M Guppy in the compilation of the staff list. While the list as it appears in the published work provides only brief biographical details on each individual member of staff, the BGS Library Archives include the full MSS notes (GSM1/718) made by Miss Guppy. -

Eighteen-year-old Arthur Woodward (1864–1944) joined the museum in 1882, was ordered to change his name and was catapulted into vertebrate palaeontology, beginning work on Austra- lian fossils in 1888. His subsequent career spanned six decades across the nineteenth to mid-twen- tieth centuries and, although Smith (renamed to distinguish him from NHMUK colleagues) Woodward never visited Australia, he made significant contributions to the study of Australian fos- sil fishes and other vertebrates. ‘ASW’ described Australian and Antarctic Palaeozoic to Quater- nary fossils in some 30 papers, often deciding or confirming the age of Australasian rock units for the first time, many of which have contributed to our understanding of fish evolution. Smith Woodward’s legacy to vertebrate palaeontology was blighted by one late middle-age misjudge- ment, which led him away from his first-chosen path. -

Texas A&M University Press, College Station, 261 p. Hardcover, US$ 34.95. As a paleontologist, I know Frank Springer (1848 – 1927) (Figure 1) as the dominant student of fossil crinoids during the latter nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and was surprised to learn that his scientific contributions were a sideline to his real profession as a lawyer in the nascent New Mexico Territory. Alternatively, David Caffey, a historian of New Mexico, found “To discover that this same man had carried on a parallel career as a paleontologist, amassing collections, conducting research, and publishing his finding in the leading scientific institutions, was somewhat astounding.”1 Frank Springer and New Mexico is a welcome biography of Frank Springer, a “many-sided man”—a man of great accomplishments. This book is not for the Earth scientist who wants to learn about the history of ideas in the productive collaboration of Frank Springer and Charles Wachsmuth or in the scientific debates between Frank Springer and Francis Bather (British Museum, Natural History, London). That history has yet to be written. Instead, Frank Springer and New Mexico is a complete biography of Frank Springer, emphasizing his contributions to the development of the New Mexico Territory, his profession, and placing his many other accomplishments within this primary context. Frank Springer was born on June 17, 1848, in Wapello, Iowa. At the age of 14, Springer enrolled at the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, graduating in 1867 with a bachelor of philosophy degree.
