Council Report: Generating funds – and ideas and as a result, Council has invited the editors, Rabbis Elli Tikvah Sarah and Lea Muehlstein, together with the Chair of the Conference of Liberal Rabbis and Cantors, Rabbi Aaron Goldstein, to meet with them in January. The meeting was scheduled for the end of January, a©er the publication date for this newsletter and I will report on the outcome of the discussions in March. Council has been doing some ‘blue sky thinking’ on how to generate funds for our synagogue. This is very necessary, as you all know, with the increasing needs of the community and with a costly building to maintain. There is already a range of fundraising initiatives in place, such as the President’s Patron’s Appeal, a planned Comedy Night and the ‘Grow your Tenner’ campaign, but we wanted to add to the list to encourage as many diªerent people as possible to contribute.     Reform Judaism: In 1000 Words Gender Context One of the distinctive features of Reform Judaism is our unequivocal commitment to gender equality. Or is it? As Rabbi Barbara Borts of Darlington Hebrew Congregation writes, though there are many examples of equality in our movement (such as our exceptional siddur and women in senior rabbinic positions) the journey towards true equality in our communities has been a process of development over many years, and in some ways is not yet complete. Content The male rabbi who was approached to write this section demurred, believing it was inappropriate for him to write about gender issues. Gender, he believed, really meant ‘women.’ This is a natural conclusion. After all, Judaism developed as a patriarchal religion with strict delineations between male Jewish life and female Jewish life: male Judaism was the norm [a Jew and His Judaism] and the woman, a separate category.i Although the idea of gender now encompasses many aspects of sexual identity, for most people, ‘gender’ will mean ‘women’ and we will thus examine past and current thinking about women’s roles in the MRJ. In 1840 West London Synagogue, women’s equality was not part of the founders’ visions. Women sat in the balcony until 1910 (except for the Yamim Nora’im) and the choir was initially all-male, although women would join early on.ii Other founding synagogues discussed participation by women, but there was no consensus about what equality for women entailed, not even through the 1990s and perhaps beyond. The first women rabbis often encountered great opposition and found it difficult to gain employment against male candidates for particular jobs.

    The WCOMC (https://wcomc.org/) Faith Group was formed in 2014 and aims to explore the impact of faith on people’s working lives, both in the City and the wider livery movement, by holding evening events each year and inviting eminent speakers to address relevant topics. The focus of our earlier events was on “Religious Freedom” and the next event relates to the concerns of the Civic City in restoring ‘Trust in the City’ and how Faith might be relevant to this. We are a people who struggle with God, as Jacob did when he became Israel, and this struggle requires that we acknowledge that we can say nothing about God with certainty, and so find meaning when we create space for diverse voices around the table. We recognise that it is when we assert absolute certainty (either way) without space for dissenting voices that we exclude others from the conversation, and lessen our own potential for understanding.     10.14324/111.444.jhs.2016v47.014 Royal Jews: Jewish Life in Berkshire from the Readmission till Today jonathan romain In a previous article for Transactions,1 I covered the remarkable history of the medieval river Jews – those who arrived after the Norman Conquest, settled in London and then gradually moved out along the River Thames to places where Jews today go for Sunday picnics (to Windsor, Marlow, Henley), which were certainly not high-density Jewish areas in the Middle Ages, but where there was a Jewish presence. That came to an end following the expulsion of the Jews in 1290 and lasted until their readmission by Cromwell in 1656. In reality there were a few exceptions by those who made brief appearances in the area under examination, Berkshire (but occasionally straying across its borders to South Buckinghamshire and parts of Oxfordshire). One such individual was found in 1450 living near Eton College, which had been established ten years earlier by Henry VI. Once discovered, the only way he could remain in the country was to be baptized. This occurred under the auspices of the king and so he took the name Henry of Eton, presumably a way of reflecting both his loyalty to the monarch and his place of residence at the time. He went to live in the Domus Conversorum in London, but left after three years, after which his whereabouts are unknown.2 A much longer resident was a Jew who converted and took the name Henry of Windsor, who stayed there from 1488 until his death in 1509.3 Everything changed after Cromwell: Jews emerged in London and later migrated to the Home Counties, the area west of London covering Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire.

    60 YEARS OF MEMORIES OF WIMBLEDON & DISTRICT SYNAGOGUE 1949 2009 During May and June 2009 to help celebrate the 60th anniversary JTrails, worked with members of Wimbledon & District Synagogue to record memories of the Synagogue and its congregation over the past 60 years.
