The most famous and the oldest of the charity’s awards is the PDSA Dickin Medal. It acknowledges outstanding acts of bravery displayed by animals serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war, worldwide. The Medal is recognised as the animals’ Victoria Cross and is the highest British honour for animal bravery in military conflicts. The medal was instituted in 1943 Maria Dickin. Maria Dickin CBE PDSA owes its foundation to the vision of one woman - Maria Elisabeth Dickin - and her determination to raise the status of animals, and the standard of their care, in society. During the First World War, Maria Dickin CBE worked to improve the dreadful state of animal health in the Whitechapel area of London. She wanted to open a clinic where East Enders living in poverty could receive free treatment for their sick and injured animals. Left: Despite the scepticism of the Establishment, Maria Dickin opened her free 'dispensary' in a Whitechapel basement on Saturday 17th November 1917. It was an immediate success and she was soon forced to find larger premises. Photo PDSA. Within six years this extraordinary woman had designed and equipped her first horse-drawn clinic and soon a fleet of mobile dispensaries was established. PDSA vehicles soon became a comforting and familiar sight throughout the country. With success came increased attention from her critics at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Ministry of Agrigulture.

    Introduction to International and Global Studies Shawn Smallman and Kimberley Brown Chapter 14: Language Language is the vehicle that carries and mediates communication in an increasingly globalized world, but in the discipline of international studies, it is often forgotten. To become global citizens, students of international studies must deal consciously with the vehicle that carries our communication. Language competence plays a critical role in the ability to move successfully between cultures and thrive within another culture. Success in global citizenship is always enhanced by fluency in a relevant second language. Research indicates that business ventures are more effective when there is an attempt to learn the host language and vastly more effective when fluency in that language has been achieved. Scholars and teachers routinely use languages other than their own to conduct research and synthesize material relevant for their classes. Foreign Service officers have little hope of becoming ambassadors without basic communication skills in at least one other language. Questions concerning language are a key aspect of cultural globalization. At the broadest level, a student of international studies needs to know something about the history and demographics of language, how many languages there are in the world, critical issues related to language, which peoples are about to lose their language, the extent to which English has become a killer language, and how interest groups use and abuse language. They also need to master at least one other language. In the future, global languages like English will carry more and more communication to the point of becoming commodities in and of themselves.

I sat in on a fascinating meeting yesterday with some independent Shia Muslims – that is to say, Shias who are trying to fight against Hezbollah’s influence in Lebanon. A linguistic history of Holland and Belgium VII Preface There has long been a need for a book in English about the Dutch language that presents important, interesting information in a form accessible even to those who know no Dutch and have no immediate intention of learning it. The need for such a book became all the more obvious to me, when, once employed in a position that entailed the dissemination of Dutch language and culture in an Anglo-Saxon society, I was continually amazed by the ignorance that prevails with regard to the Dutch language, even among colleagues involved in the teaching of other European languages. How often does one hear that Dutch is a dialect of German, or that Flemish and Dutch are closely related (but presumably separate) languages? To my knowledge there has never been a book in English that sets out to clarify such matters and to present other relevant issues to the general and studying public.1. Holland's contributions to European and world history, to art, to shipbuilding, hydraulic engineering, bulb growing and cheese manufacture for example, are all aspects of Dutch culture which have attracted the interest of other nations, and consequently there are numerous books in English and other languages on these subjects. But the language of the people that achieved so much in all those fields has been almost completely neglected by other nations, and to a degree even by the Dutch themselves who have long been admired for their polyglot talents but whose lack of interest in their own language seems never to have disturbed them.
