In this paper, glacier and climate changes in Xinjiang during the past decades were comprehensively discussed based on glacier inventory data, individual monitored glacier observations, recent publications, as well as meteorological records. The results show that glaciers have been in continuous mass loss and dimensional shrinkage since the 1960s, although there are spatial differences between mountains and sub-regions, and the significant temperature increase is the dominant controlling factor of glacier change. The mass loss of monitored glaciers in the Tien Shan has accelerated since the late 1990s, but has a slight slowing after 2010. Remote sensing results also show a more negative mass balance in the 2000s and mass loss slowing in the latest decade (2010s) in most regions. -

Committee of Emergency Situations & Civil Defense, ECHO and UNDP Tajikistan Project “Strengthened Disaster Risk Management in Tajikistan” Minutes of the REACT Meeting 12 March 2010, UN Conference Hall Chair: Mr. Khaybullo Latipov, Chairman, Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CoES) Participants: REACT partners (Annex I- attached) 1. Introduction Mr. Latipov, opened the meeting and welcomed all the participants. 2. Government recovery action plan in Vanj district: • Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense Mr. Latipov, chairman of CoES, briefed participants that following the earthquake occurred in Vanj district on January 2nd, 2010, overall 5 different meetings with REACT partners have been convened covering issues related to Vanj earthquake response and recovery operations: 1) January 5, 2010 – Extraordinary REACT meeting; 2) January 8, 2010 – Meeting with the first deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; 3) January 20, 2010 – Regular REACT meeting; 4) February 10, 2010 – Regular REACT meeting; 5) February 18, 2010 – Early Recovery Planning meeting. As of disaster occurrence date up to this date, following response measures have been undertaken by the Government of Tajikistan: - Governmental Commission under the chairmanship of Prime Minister has visited the disaster site on January 2010; - Assessment of the caused damage has been conducted; - Affected households identified and list finalized; - Delivery of tents to the disaster site organized; - Land plot identified for relocation of the population and engineering-geological assessment conducted; - Master Plan of the new settlement, design of the water supply and electricity supply system developed; Mr. Latipov announced that representatives of specialized state agencies, responsible for recovery actions in Vanj district have been invited to the meeting and passed the floor to invited representatives for more detailed briefing. -

Short Form: Tajikistan. Term for Citizen(s): Tajikistani(s). Capital: Dushanbe. Other Major Cities: Istravshan, Khujand, Kulob, and Qurghonteppa. Independence: The official date of independence is September 9, 1991, the date on which Tajikistan withdrew from the Soviet Union. Public Holidays: New Year’s Day (January 1), International Women’s Day (March 8), Navruz (Persian New Year, March 20, 21, or 22), International Labor Day (May 1), Victory Day (May 9), Independence Day (September 9), Constitution Day (November 6), and National Reconciliation Day (November 9). Flag: The flag features three horizontal stripes: a wide middle white stripe with narrower red (top) and green stripes. Centered in the white stripe is a golden crown topped by seven gold, five-pointed stars. The red is taken from the flag of the Soviet Union; the green represents agriculture and the white, cotton. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Early History: Iranian peoples such as the Soghdians and the Bactrians are the ethnic forbears of the modern Tajiks. They have inhabited parts of Central Asia for at least 2,500 years, assimilating with Turkic and Mongol groups. Between the sixth and fourth centuries B.C., present-day Tajikistan was part of the Persian Achaemenian Empire, which was conquered by Alexander the Great in the fourth century B.C. After that conquest, Tajikistan was part of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, a successor state to Alexander’s empire. -

地理学論集 Geographical Studies №84(2009) №84(2009) Mapping Features of Fedchenko Glacier, the Pamirs, Central Asia from Space 宇宙から見た中央アジア,パミールのフェドチェンコ氷河の特徴 Shuji IWATA* 岩田 修二* Key words:glacier basin form, compound basins valley glacier, glacier front fluctuation, surge, basin piracies キーワード:氷河流域形態,複合流域谷氷河,末端変動,サージ,流域争奪 要旨 さまざまなインターネット情報,とくにGoogle Earthの立体画像やGoogle Mapの等高線地図によってフェドチェンコ氷 河の地形特徴を明らかにできるようになった。これらの情報と1970年代のソビエト陸軍の地図(1:100,000)を用いると, ロシア語圏以外の人々にはあまり知られていないフェドチェンコ氷河の氷河地形学的側面が理解できる。フェドチェンコ 氷河はパミールの北西部の山岳地にある長さ77 ㎞の巨大な谷氷河で,偏西風によって大西洋からの湿気によっておもに冬 に涵養される。フェドチェンコ氷河は革命峰(6,940 m)の西側斜面の海抜5,400 mから始まり北に流れ高度 2,900 mの末 端で終わる。氷河下流区間(末端から30 ㎞まで)は表面岩屑に覆われた細長い氷舌で,中流区間(30 ㎞地点,高度4,050 mから45 ㎞地点,高度4,500 mまで)は南東から北西に流下し多くの支氷河を合わせる。中間地点の最上部の右岸には, 氷河本流が東側にあふれ出し小規模な氷舌(タヌィマス末端)を形成している。上流区間(45 ㎞から流域上端まで)は, 非対称形である。右岸側には革命峰を含む6,000 m級の山塊になっているが左岸側には顕著な高まりがなく,氷河に覆わ れた緩やかな分水界を経て,南西側の谷氷河へと通じている。氷河の上流区間を含む流域は小規模な氷原,または横断 型氷河系を形成しているが全体としてみると,フェドチェンコ氷河は谷氷河である。氷河下流区間で本流に接しているビ バーク氷河(パミール最高峰イスモイル=ソモニ,7,495 mがある)では,繰り返し氷河サージが起こっている。人工衛星 画像の比較によれば,1990年代以後のフェドチェンコ氷河の末端の縮小はおこっていない。氷河変動の状況はカラコラム 山脈の大型氷河とよく似ている。フドチェンコ氷河がこのような大きな氷河にまで発達したのは氷河侵食による流域の争 奪が起こったからと考えられる。 Ⅰ.Introduction The Pamirs in eastern Tajikistan are called the roof of the world. Country Report for the Preparation of the First Report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China June 2003 Beijing CONTENTS Executive Summary Biological diversity is the basis for the existence and development of human society and has aroused the increasing great attention of international society. In June 1992, more than 150 countries including China had jointly signed the "Pact of Biological Diversity". Domestic animal genetic resources are an important component of biological diversity, precious resources formed through long-term evolution, and also the closest and most direct part of relation with human beings. Therefore, in order to realize a sustainable, stable and high-efficient animal production, it is of great significance to meet even higher demand for animal and poultry product varieties and quality by human society, strengthen conservation, and effective, rational and sustainable utilization of animal and poultry genetic resources. The "Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") was compiled in accordance with the requirements of the "World Status of Animal Genetic Resource " compiled by the FAO. The Ministry of Agriculture" (MOA) has attached great importance to the compilation of the Report, organized nearly 20 experts from administrative, technical extension, research institutes and universities to participate in the compilation team. In 1999, the first meeting of the compilation staff members had been held in the National Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Service, discussed on the compilation outline and division of labor in the Report compilation, and smoothly fulfilled the tasks to each of the compilers. -

SUDANWORKINGPAPER Comparing borderland dynamics Processes of territorialisation in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan, southern Yunnan in China, and the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan Leif Ole Manger Department of Social Anthropology, (UiB) Universtity of Bergen SWP 2015: 3 The programme Assisting Regional Universities in Sudan and South Sudan (ARUSS) aims to build academic bridges between Sudan and South Sudan. The overall objective is to enhance the quality and relevance of teaching and research in regional universities. As part of the program, research is carried out on a number of topics which are deemed important for lasting peace and development within and between the two countries. Efforts are also made to influence policy debates and improve the basis for decision making in both countries as well as among international actors. ARUSS is supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. About the author Leif Ole Manger is Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen. His research has emphasis on the Horn of Africa, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean, with long-term field research in the Sudan, and shorter fieldworks in Yemen, Hyderabad, India, Singapore and China. His research focuses on economic and ecological anthropology, development studies, planning, land tenure, trade, communal labour, Arabization and Islamization. Mixing a broad cultural historical understanding of a region with current events is also important in Manger’s latest work on borders and borderland populations. Regionally this work focuses the borderland situations between Sudan and the new nation state of South Sudan, between post-Soviet Tajikistan, China and Afghanistan, and between contemporary China, Myanmar and India. -

Tian Shan system is important water resource in Central Asia: mountains river waters are intensely taken for hydropower energy, urban systems, irrigation. But geopolitics in Tian Shan is difficult: it crosses five densely populated countries. Current problem consists in water delivery between territories located in the highlands with excellent water supply and those located in valleys with water shortage.
