Behind Enemy Lines: World War II Civilian Resistance Efforts in Europe by Felishia A. Hendra Elliot L. Hearst, Faculty Mentor PACE UNIVERSITY August 31, 2019 Cover of the underground Yiddish newspaper, Jugend Shtimme (Voice of the Youth), which was distributed in the Warsaw Ghetto. The Yiddish caption reads "Fascism must be smashed!" Date: 1941 | Source: United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Introduction The notion that perception is reality is often false. During World War II, the Nazis put their long-held plans of annihilating the Jews from Europe into action. Members of other groups they believed to be inferior were also targeted, such as those with developmental or mental issues, Romani, homosexuals, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Many people are of the opinion that their victims went to their fates passively, sometimes described with the cliché of going “like a lamb to the slaughter”. The well-known Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is widely recognized as one of the few, if not only, attempts at resistance. While it is true that many of the doomed did not resist much, if at all, important considerations to keep in mind are that for the most part these individuals were unarmed due to Nazi-imposed gun control laws, they were minorities who were vastly outnumbered, and many of their neighbors were either Nazi sympathizers or outright collaborators themselves. It is also important to note that their captors constantly and deliberately lied to these people, routinely telling them they were going to work camps for a short time, or sent them to live in other areas, when in truth death was their ultimate predetermined destination.

For starters, everyone in the novel is an idiot, and I mean that as sincerely as possible. The entire cast has about half a cup of intelligence between them, though Harry Turtledove seems to think they're all sharp as tacks. He repeatedly tells us how clever and wry his characters are, even as they spout their idiotic nonsense ineffectually masquerading as wit. • Early Testimonies of Jewish Survivors of World War II
Tragedy and Triumph Early Testimonies of Jewish Survivors of World War II Compiled and Translated by Freda Hodge ABOUT THIS BOOK In this collection Freda Hodge retrieves early voices of Holocaust survivors. Men, women and children relate experiences of deportation and ghetto isation, forced labour camps and death camps, death marches and liber ation. Such eyewitness accounts collected in the immediate postwar period constitute, as the historian Feliks Tych points out, the most important body of Jewish documents pertaining to the history of the Holocaust. The fresh ness of memory makes these early voices profoundly different from, and historically more significant than, later recollections gathered in oral history programs. Carefully selected and painstakingly translated, these survivor accounts were first published between 1946 and 1948 in the Yiddish journal Fun Letzten Khurben (‘From the Last Destruction’) in postwar Germany, by refugees waiting in ‘Displaced Persons’ camps, in the American zone of occupation, for the arrival of travel documents and visas. These accounts have not previously been available in English. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Freda Hodge holds degrees in English, Linguistics and Jewish Studies, and has taught at universities and colleges in South Africa and Australia. Fluent in Hebrew as well as Yiddish, she works at the Holocaust Centre in Melbourne conducting interviews with survivors and families. • The Radegast Station Holocaust Monument – Its History, Contemporary Function and Perception in the Eyes of Tourists and Lodz Inhabitants
BULLETIN OF GEOGRAPHY /SOCIO-ECONOMIC SERIES/ NO. 9/2008 WALDEMAR CUDNY UNIVERSITY OF LODZ THE RADEGAST STATION HOLOCAUST MONUMENT – iTS HISTORY, CONTEMPORARY FUNCTION AND PERCEPTION IN THE EYES OF TOURISTS AND LODZ INHABITANTS DOI: 10.2478/v10089-008-0008-4 ABSTRACT: The article presents the problems of the Lodz Ghetto organized by the Germans during World War II and the role of the ghetto railway station – called Radegast Station. The author also describes the contemporary function of the station, paying particular attention to the initiative of the local authorities, which led to building a monument within its premises, commemorating the Holocaust of the Lodz Jewish population. Following that, the author presents the results of a survey conducted in the monument area in 2007, which allowed the local authorities’ activity and its indirect influence on the image of Lodz to be assessed. KEY WORDS: Lodz, Ghetto, the Holocaust, perception, tourism. Lodz (Łódź in Polish) became a big city in the 19th c. as a result of rapid industrialization processes. Due to the decisions taken by the Polish Kingdom authorities concerning the localization of a new industrial city in that area, Lodz developed from a small farming settlement into a large industrial centre, based on textile production. In the 19th c. the city became a “promised land” to entrepreneurs from the Russian Empire and Western Europe. Settlers from the Polish Kingdom, Russia, Saxony, and the Czechs together with the Brits went there to stay. The ethnic composition of the city included mostly Poles, Jews, Germans, and Russians. The Jews, next to Germans, were the owners of the largest industrial fortunes.
