SWAMINATHAN Department of Entomology, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur, Rajasthan 313001 India. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The genus Natula is a new record from the state of Rajasthan, India. Description of the species has been supported with photographs and line drawings leading to its identification. The other common sword-tailed crickets of the sub-family Trigonidiinae have also been described. Key words: Orthoptera, Gryllidae, Trigonidiinae, Natula, Trigonidium, Paratrigonidium, Metioche Introduction In a taxonomic review of Sword-tailed Crickets (Trigonidiinae) from Korea, Kim (2013) confirmed four members of the sub-family, named on the basis of the peculiar shape of the ovipositor (Kevan, 1982); also often referred to simply as ‘trigs’ (Otte, 1994b). Walker and Masaki (1989) opined that the ovipositor is shaped so in order to insert eggs into plant tissue and the adhesive tarsal pads of the legs adapted for running upside down on plant leaves. Though they are of small size (4–7mm), the crickets are conspicuous due to their remarkable vivid colorations and crawling behavior on the vegetation. They prefer humid habitats with abundant vegetation; such as swamps, marshes, and bogs, and they can be generally collected by net-sweeping or beating method.

  • Mitochondrial Genome Characterization of the Family Trigonidiidae
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Mitochondrial genome characterization of the family Trigonidiidae (Orthoptera) reveals novel structural features and nad1 transcript ends Chuan Ma1,3, Yeying Wang2,3, Licui Zhang1 & Jianke Li1* The Trigonidiidae, a family of crickets, comprises 981 valid species with only one mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequenced to date. To explore mitogenome features of Trigonidiidae, six mitogenomes from its two subfamilies (Nemobiinae and Trigonidiinae) were determined. Two types of gene rearrangements involving a trnN-trnS1-trnE inversion and a trnV shufing were shared by Trigonidiidae. A long intergenic spacer was observed between trnQ and trnM in Trigonidiinae (210−369 bp) and Nemobiinae (80–216 bp), which was capable of forming extensive stem-loop secondary structures in Trigonidiinae but not in Nemobiinae. The anticodon of trnS1 was TCT in Trigonidiinae, rather than GCT in Nemobiinae and other related subfamilies. There was no overlap between nad4 and nad4l in Dianemobius, as opposed to a conserved 7-bp overlap commonly found in insects. Furthermore, combined comparative analysis and transcript verifcation revealed that nad1 transcripts ended with a U, corresponding to the T immediately preceding a conserved motif GAGAC in the superfamily Grylloidea, plus poly-A tails. The resultant UAA served as a stop codon for species lacking full stop codons upstream of the motif. Our fndings gain novel understanding of mitogenome structural diversity and provide insight into accurate mitogenome annotation. Te typical mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of insects is a circular molecule ranging in size from 15 kb to 18 kb1. It harbors 37 genes including two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs).

), así como siete sinonimias específicas: Gryllomorpha (G.) dalmatina (Ocskay, 1832) (= Gryllomorpha dalmatina strumae Andreeva, 1982, syn. n.), Petaloptila (P.) aliena (Brunner-Wattenwyl, 1882) (= Discoptila eitschbergeri Harz, 1976, syn. n.), Acheta hispanicus Rambur, 1839 (= Gryllus erythrospilus Walker, 1869, syn. n., Gryllus hispanicus var. fusculus Bolívar, 1927, syn. n.), Eumodicogryllus bordigalensis (Latreille, 1802) (= Gryllodes ferdinandi Bolívar, 1899, syn. n., Gryllus chinensis var intermedia Bolívar, 1927, syn. n.), Eugryllodes pipiens (Dufour, 1820) (= Gryllodes pipiens var. provincialis Azam, 1901, syn. n.), y además cinco estatus nuevos y una combinación nueva.

  • The Reed Cricket Natula Averni (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)
ARTICULATA 2011 26 (1): 51௅65 FAUNISTIK In search of the most mysterious orthopteran of Europe: the Reed cricket Natula averni (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) Baudewijn Odé, Roy Kleukers, Leonardo Forbicioni, Bruno Massa, Christian Roesti, Emmanuel Boitier & Yoan Braud Abstract In the last few years a lot of new information has become available on Natula averni. As the common name we propose Reed cricket, because the species was found almost exclusively in reed beds. Recent findings show that this spe- cies is more abundant than previously thought. The species can easily be found with knowledge of distribution, habitat and song, all described in this publication. Nevertheless a lot of questions remain about the taxonomy. We hope that infor- mation gathered after this publication will help us to reveal the proper identity of reed crickets in Europe. Introduction The cricket Natula averni (subfamily Trigoniinae) (fig. 1a-d) was described by A. Costa in 1855. The species was later placed in Natula (GOROCHOV & LLORENTE 2001). Apart from an undated record from the Canary Islands the species was not recorded in Europe for more than 130 years.

Zoosystema 38 (4): 405-452. https:// doi.org/10.5252/z2016n4a1 ABSTRACT Crickets (Insecta, Orthoptera, Gryllidea) are amongst the most abundant and diverse insects in New Caledonia: 40 genera are recorded today from the Archipelago and 180 cricket species have been reported; 19 genera and more than 90% of the species are endemic. Owing to this diversity, crickets prove an interesting model to test evolutionary hypotheses about New Caledonia and its fauna.

  • Laying the Foundations of Evolutionary and Systematic Studies in Crickets (Insecta, Orthoptera): a Multilocus Phylogenetic Analysis
Cladistics Cladistics 32 (2016) 54–81 10.1111/cla.12114 Laying the foundations of evolutionary and systematic studies in crickets (Insecta, Orthoptera): a multilocus phylogenetic analysis Ioana C. We propose the first phylogenetic hypothesis for the evolu- tion of crickets sensu lato, based on analysis of 205 species, representing 88% of the subfamilies and 71% tribes currently listed in the database Orthoptera Species File (OSF). We reconstructed parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenies using fragments of 18S, 28SA, 28SD, H3, 12S, 16S, and cytb (~3600 bp). Our results support the monophyly of the cricket clade, and its subdivision into two clades: mole crickets and ant-loving crickets on the one hand, and all the other crickets on the other (i.e. crickets sensu stricto). Crickets sensu stricto form seven monophyletic clades, which support part of the OSF fami- lies, “subfamily groups”, or subfamilies: the mole crickets (OSF Gryllotalpidae), the scaly crickets (OSF Mogoplistidae), and the true crickets (OSF Gryllidae) are recovered as monophyletic.

Croat. Vol. 28, No 1, 131-146, 2019, Zagreb. During a study conducted in 2018 on Mt Sniježnica, the faunistically understudied southernmost karst mountain in Croatia, altogether 42 orthopteran and three mantid species were recorded at 18 localities at different altitudes. Two Poecilimon taxa new to Croatian fauna were found, one of them an undescribed species from the elegans group. Three bush-cricket species, namely Leptophyes intermedia, Platycleis albopunctata grisea and Pholidoptera fallax, were recorded for the first time in the Dubrovnik region. A curious variability of male cerci length, shape and position was observed within the Pachytrachis gracilis populations in the study area. The presence of several orthopteran species of importance for nature conservation was confirmed on Mt Sniježnica.
