Empire of Hope and Tragedy: Jordanes and the Invention of Roman-Gothic History Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian Swain Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Timothy Gregory, Co-advisor Anthony Kaldellis Kristina Sessa, Co-advisor Copyright by Brian Swain 2014 Abstract This dissertation explores the intersection of political and ethnic conflict during the emperor Justinian’s wars of reconquest through the figure and texts of Jordanes, the earliest barbarian voice to survive antiquity. Jordanes was ethnically Gothic - and yet he also claimed a Roman identity. Writing from Constantinople in 551, he penned two Latin histories on the Gothic and Roman pasts respectively. Crucially, Jordanes wrote while Goths and Romans clashed in the imperial war to reclaim the Italian homeland that had been under Gothic rule since 493. That a Roman Goth wrote about Goths while Rome was at war with Goths is significant and has no analogue in the ancient record. I argue that it was precisely this conflict which prompted Jordanes’ historical inquiry. Jordanes, though, has long been considered a mere copyist, and seldom treated as an historian with ideas of his own. And the few scholars who have treated Jordanes as an original author have dampened the significance of his Gothicness by arguing that barbarian ethnicities were evanescent and subsumed by the gravity of a Roman political identity. They hold that Jordanes was simply a Roman who can tell us only about Roman things, and supported the Roman emperor in his war against the Goths. -

1004604 Assessing Jordanes’ Getica By Ferdinand Goetzen 1 1004604 Jordanes Seminar Paper The Origins and Deeds of the Goths, also known as Getica is not only the biggest but also the most disputed source when it comes to determining the origins and identity of the Barbarians. Written as an abridged version of Cassiodorius’ 12 volume History of the Goths in 551 by Jordanes, a retired Byzantine bureaucrat of Gothic descent, Getica has been subject to much dispute and controversy. Jordanes’ work on the Goths attempts to recount their history and noble legacy, from early beginnings in Scandinavia to their military fate endured at the hands of Justinian I. Given the circumstances in which both works were compiled, there is much disagreement as to how much of Getica reflects the true history and identity of the Goths. This paper intends to explain and assess the issues that revolve around Getica by analyzing the source itself as well as the theories of major scholars. Three factors must be taken into account when assessing the reliability of Getica as a historical source, the first being Cassiodorius’ intentions while writing his 12-volume History of the Goths. Cassiodorius’ intentions were not literary but political. It is suggested by Christensen and Goffart that his work is entirely fictitious1. Working as a roman nobleman under the rule of the Gothic King Theoderic, it is thought that Cassiodorius was commissioned or at least inspired to write a history of the Goths that would celebrate their long and noble legacy. GRAECO-LATINA BRUNENSIA 17, 2012, 2 VÁCLAV BLAŽEK (MASARYK UNIVERSITY) VISIGOTHAE VERSUS OSTROGOTHAE In this article, new interpretations of the ethnonyms Visigoths and Ostrogoths are proposed in a wider context of Germanic and Indo-European ethnonyms. The first component of the ethn- onym Visigothae is etymologized on the basis of Old High German wisa “meadow, pasture”, to express the way of livelihood of its bearers, Goths-Pastoralists. On the other way, the first com- ponent of the ethnonym Austrogoti/Ostrogothae may be identified with Old High German ustrī & ustarī “diligence, activity”. These etymologies allow us to determine in both the ethnonyms the pair representing the functional opposition: Goths-Pastoralists vs. Goths-Farmers, resem- bling another pair of Gothic ethnonyms, for this once environmental, Greutungi vs. Tervingi, originally “people from the stony or sandy country” vs. “people from forests”, respectively. THE ORIGIN OF THE GOTHS by Frederik Kortlandt - Leiden Witold Manczak has argued that Gothic is closer to Upper German than to Middle German, closer to High German than to Low German, closer to German than to Scandinavian, closer to Danish than to Swe dish, and that the original homeland of the Goths must therefore be located in the southernmost part of the Germanic territories, not in Scandinavia (1982, 1984, 1987a, 1987b, 1992). I think that his argu ment is correct and that it is time to abandon lordanes' classic view that the Goths came from Scandinavia. We must therefore reconsider the grounds for adopting the latter position and the reasons why it al ways has remained popular. The reconstruction of Gothic history and the historical value of Ior danes' Getica have been analyzed in detail by Peter Heather (1991: 3- 67). As he points out about this prime literary source (p. 5): "Two features have made it central to modern historical reconstructions. First, it covers the entire sweep of Gothic history. [... ] Second, there is a Gothic origin to some of the Getica's material, which makes it uni que among surviving sources." Iordanes' work draws heavily on the lost Gothic histories of Ablabius and Cassiodorus, who "would seem to have been in the employ of Gothic dynasts and had to produce Gothic histories of a kind that their employers wished to hear" (Heather 1991: 67). As to the origin of the Goths and their neighbors, the Gothic migrations and the great kings of the past, oral history is the most likely source of the stories. -

Recibido 15/11/2015, aceptado 04/05/2016 197 OTÁVIO VIEIRA PINTO lost or ignored by Roman authors, centred in their own cultural and literary scopes.1 In the past decades, the Getica sparkled countless historiographical debates concerning its factual accuracy, its general purpose and its effectiveness in dealing with veridical Gothic matters.2 Because it was written as Justinian was finishing – and winning – his campaign against the Ostrogoths in Italy, some researchers, such as Walter Goffart, saw in it a propagandistic tone, whose value was embedded in a contextual setup rather than a proper historical narrative (Goffart, 1988: 20- 111). -

On the Origin of Alpine Slovenes
On the Origin of Alpine Slovenes Aleš Iglič University of Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia Some historians believe that Slovenes were drawn into the European cultural circle by (Bavarian) feudalism, although it is this very same feudalism that also prevented them access to the resources needed for their social and cultural development – it is precisely this fact, they suggest, that presented one of the most significant obstacles for the further development of the Slovene nation. We cannot agree with this viewpoint. Rather, Slovenes owe their inclusion in the medieval European civilisation, which originates from European antique traditions stemming from ancient Greece, primarily to Roman and other indigenous peoples, as well as to Christian missionaries from the non-Germanic parts of Europe (Iglič, 2007a), i.e. Ireland and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, who spread Christianity and the culture of the antiquity in the region of the Diocese of Salzburg, from where missionaries came to Carantania, Carniola and Lower Pannonia (Fig. 1). The first Apostle of Carantania Modestus, for example, was sent to Carantania on the orders of the Irish monk Vergilius of Salzburg (Gruden, 1992). Overall, Irish monks contributed greatly to the preservation of the European civilisation in the Early Middle Ages also in other parts of Europe (Cahill, 1995). By passing on the preserved antique knowledge, for example literacy, onto the barbarian peoples, Byzantine missionaries from Greece and Aquileia (Grivec, 1927; Bratož, 1990) as well as Irish missionaries (monks) preserved the European civilisation, which is based on the accomplishments of ancient Greece in the fields of philosophy, science, art, and political organisation (democracy).
