It certainly was a picture. A very respectable entry at all three sales met as we expected a very cautious trade for the breeding sheep. No one can quite tell me the reason for this as the fat trade has been good if not very good for most of the year. We can only assume that everyone quite rightly is acting with extreme caution as we move forward with or without Brexit. However, the store lamb trade was very good at all of the sales, showing there is some confidence going forward from the finishing men. Therefore I hope we can look ahead now for a stable market for our quality produce and look to continue to do what we have done in the past and what we do best. Again I thank all our sponsors, judges and members of the North Yorkshire Moors Quality Sheep Association for their continued support, together with all vendors and purchasers who attended the sales. [email protected] th WOMBLETON SHEEP SALE, THURSDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 2018 Cundalls held their annual first show and sale of gimmer lambs and breeding sheep at Wombleton on Thursday. It was a bright and sunny morning and all the sheep looked well in the in the open pens. There was a particularly high turnout of buyers in all departments with a near 100% clearance of stock entered. However the prize winning pen of Mule gimmer lambs realised £10/head more than last year Trade was maintained at a respectable level throughout the day despite the change in weather conditions which saw some very welcome rain. In contrast to last year the sun shone throughout the day and the sheep looked wonderful in the open pens and through the sales rings which were packed with buyers from all parts. Trade for the breeding stock although back on last year was satisfactory however in contrast the store lamb trade was as buoyant as it has ever been showing there is some confidence going forward into next year with or without Brexit. 2339 store lambs were sold on the day and topped at £72.00 with an overall average of £9.00/head better than last year. Continental gimmer lambs topped at an excellent £124 to average £77.81 Less numbers of Mule gimmer lambs were forward than usual with 910 been sold on the day and topped at £118 with an average of £59.30, some £8.00 /lamb back on last year. A stronger entry of 772 Mule shearlings made a trade representative of the seasonal demand to top at £142 and average £94.48, some £20.00/head back on last year. The trade in the Ram ring was very competitive with Suffolk’s topping at a firm 320 guineas; Continentals at 580 guineas; Blue Faced Leicester’s at 230 guineas and Cheviots at a very impressive 480 guineas.
