Anderson Religious Education Master of Religious Education This thesis answers the question of how a vision recorded in Joseph Smith’s journal found its home in the Doctrine and Covenants and become recognized as canonized scripture. The April 3, 1836, journal entry became known as Section 110. Section 110 serves as a foundation for the current practices and doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, involving temple building and temple ordinances. Thus it is important to understand the history of this Section from journal entry to canonization because it is an example of recovering revelation. -

These officers assisted him before the principal quorums of Church leadership were formed or fully developed. This growing board of managers printed the first collection of Joseph Smith’s revelations; planned for the new city of Zion and its temples, as it did for Kirtland; operated the Lord’s storehouses; and fostered other com- mercial interests. -

Arrington] was church historian occurred on June 9, 1978, when the First Presidency announced a divine revelation that all worthy males might be granted the priesthood…. Just before noon my secretary, Nedra Yeates Pace, telephoned with remarkable news: Spencer W. Kimball had just announced a revelation that all worthy males, including those of African descent, might be ordained to the priesthood. Within five minutes, my son Carle Wayne telephoned from New York City to say he had heard the news. I was in the midst of sobbing with gratitude for this answer to our prayers and could hardly speak with him. -

Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

Mickey i Acknowledgements Throughout the last six and a half years I have benefited enormously from the mentorship and friendship of my wonderful dissertation committee members: Bill Clark, Anna Grzymala-Busse, Andy Markovits, Rob Mickey and Rob Franzese. I assembled this committee before I even knew what I wanted to write about, and I made the right choices—I cannot imagine a more supportive, patient and insightful group of advisers. They gave me badly-needed discipline when I needed it (which was all the time) and oversaw numerous episodes of Schumpeterian “creative destruction.” They also gave me more ideas than I could ever hope to assimilate, ideas which will be providing me with directions for future research for many years to come. But these huge contributions are minor in comparison to the fact that they taught me how to think like a political scientist. I couldn’t ask for anything more. All of these papers had trial runs in various internal workshops and seminars at the University of Michigan, and I profited greatly from the structured feedback that I received from the Michigan political science community, faculty and grad students alike. Do Mormon “Scriptures” Pass the Tests for Divine Inspiration?1 Let us examine the Mormon “scriptures” to determine if they past the tests of divine inspiration. In order to qualify as inspired, a text must pass all the tests for inspiration: 1. Be spoken from, and in the name of, the Lord (Jeremiah 30:2, 1 Peter 1:21). 2. Exalt and glorify God (John 5:39 &; 17:4-10; Ephesians 1:13-14). 3. Directs the love of men toward God (Colossians 3:16; Revelation 19:10). 4. Draw men to repent of their rebellion against God and to submit fully to Him (Psalms 19:17; 2 Timothy 3:16). 5. Prophecies come to fulfillment with 100 percent accuracy (Deuteronomy 18:20-222). 6. Support the laws, precepts, and principles set forth in the rest of Scripture-without contradiction (Isaiah 8:20; Matthew 5:17; John 10:353). 7. Communicate only truth, in all disciplines of knowledge (Psalms 119:160; Hebrews 6:18 4). Upon examination, one finds all the Mormon “scriptures” fail one or more of the last three tests. 5. Prophecies come to fulfillment with 100 percent accuracy. The Bible warns us regarding false prophecy: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). In addition, we are told to “examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Contrary to Mormon teachings, which encourage prayer to receive a “burning in the bosom,” the Bible tells us to test truthfulness of prophecy by seeing if the prophecy comes to pass. -

You are listening to the Mormon Channel. Worthy young men in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have the privilege of receiving the Aaronic Priesthood. This allows them to belong to a quorum where they learn to serve and administer in some of the ordinances of the Church. In the April 1997 General Priesthood Meeting, Elder David B. Haight reminisced about his youth and how the priesthood helped him progress. (Elder David B. Haight, Priesthood Session, April 1997) “Those of you who are young today--and I'm thinking of the deacons who are assembled in meetings throughout the world--I remember when I was ordained a deacon by Bishop Adams. He took the place of my father when he died. My father baptized me, but he wasn't there when I received the Aaronic Priesthood. I remember the thrill that I had when I became a deacon and now held the priesthood, as they explained to me in a simple way and simple language that I had received the power to help in the organization and the moving forward of the Lord's program upon the earth. We receive that as 12-year-old boys. We go through those early ranks of the lesser priesthood--a deacon, a teacher, and then a priest--learning little by little, here a little and there a little, growing in knowledge and wisdom. That little testimony that you start out with begins to grow, and you see it magnifying and you see it building in a way that is understandable to you. -

FAMILY STORIES: HANDLE WITH CARE, ESPECIALLY THE MOST DRAMATIC ONES WILLIAM G. HARTLEY Rare is the family story that does not get “better” as retold over time. A few families have in them characters who like to tell tall tales, or at least embellish information they relate about their parents or grandparents. Most often, however, misinformation gains currency unintentionally. People assume they have the story right, but in fact they misunderstood minor and sometimes major details. We need to record and treasure family stories that come to us, even though most are wheat with chaff. Folklorist Bert Wilson has shown us that repeatedly told family stories, be they true or false, convey a truth about what the family values. He suggests we ask why that story matters so much to the family that it continues to be told.1 But, as history students are taught early, we need to keep an attitude of skepticism about how accurate our sources of historical information are.
