Seeds are from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Cantare Bean - Bush. 50-55 days. Superior producer of nice straight dark-green pods for snaps. The slim 4-5-inch pods are stringless, and the flavor is every bit as outstanding as the yield! This French variety makes a fine crop for market growers or home gardeners. Excellent tolerance to bean mosaic virus. They are also great for canning and freezing. Dorinny Sweet Corn - 75 days. Early season sweet corn that yields well in cool climates, Dorinny was originally a Canadian cross between Golden Bantam and Pickaninny. Received a Market Gardeners’ Award of Merit in 1936. Reliable even where soils are cool. Yellow kernels on 6- to 7-inch cobs offer old-fashioned sweet corn flavor. Plants reach 4-5 feet in height and usually yield two ears per plant. 2 plants per pot provided. Marketmore 76 Cucumber - 70 days. White Currant Tomato - The fruit is tiny, barely an inch across, and creamy white, with skins having a pale yellow tint. The sweetest tomato we have ever grown, with superb flavor. Florence Fennel - (Foeniculum vulgare) Plant grows like dill. Used in Italian cooking; tasty. Very easy to grow. This plant is nearly grown and can be carefully transplanted into garden soil. Recommendation to cover with some type of dome with vents while transitioning to new environment. Do not remove dirt around bulb. Keep potted dirt intact and place directly into the ground. Wild Zaatar Oregano - (Origanum syriaca) We offer seeds from Israel for this plant that grows wild in Israel, Jordan and surrounding areas. Doubtless a common herb in Bible times, and still one of the tastiest! It has great flavor that blends hints of oregano, thyme and marjoram. A favorite. Japanese Parsley - (Cryptotaenia japonica) This delicate and refreshing Japanese herb is easy to grow. It loves shade; it can be grown in full to part shade and is perfect for low-light spaces in the garden.. It is typically used raw, sprinkled atop a meal to give it the perfect final touch. The leaves, stems, roots and seeds are all edible and excellent in stir fries, soups, salads and other Asian-inspired dishes. Rosemary (Rosy) - (Rosmarina officinalis) Tender perennial to 30 inches. The plant has been used for centuries, both medicinally and in the kitchen. Small evergreen shrub is covered with needle-like aromatic leaves and a myriad of tiny pink or blue flowers in summer. Grow in containers for overwintering indoors. The dark green leaves may be used fresh or dried. We offer select seed that is easier to start, but it still can be somewhat challenging. The plants are lovely and can live for years with proper care. Corrales Azafran Safflower - A wonderful and easy-to-grow, substitute for true saffron in cooking! Safflower is a wonderful plant with several uses and one of humanity’s oldest crops. This Corrales Azafran strain has stayed close to this original seed brought to New Mexico. flowers can be used as a coloring spice, dried to brew tea and also, a dye with a deep orange, almost red, pigment. The young plants make a delicious leafy green. Ageratum - Annual. Old-fashioned favorite in gentle pastel tones of lavender, blue and white. Ageratum flowers make a lot of nectar and support beneficial insect populations. They are also a choice plant for the front of the border, in rock gardens and more. So precious. Giant Perfection Aster - Beautiful, long-lasting cut flowers, an old-fashioned favorite. Peony-type, extra-large flowers that are great for cutting. This formula mix has all the best colors. This variety is popular with home and market growers. Blue Disc African Daisy - Annual. Silvery white ray flowers offset the steel-blue “eyes” or centers. Heat-loving daisy is easy from seed and thrives in heat. Plants to 24 inches. Very striking and makes a brave show all summer long! Indiana Giant Cockscomb - Jere Gettle received seeds of this amazing, mammoth variety from an Amish family while traveling in Indiana around 2004. The deep crimson, tightly curled heads can reach to 14 inches across! A perfect choice for cutting gardens, landscaping, and county fair displays. Purple Stardust Iceplant - (Delosperma Floribunda) A wonderful attraction that is as delicious as it is beautiful! The bright, shimmering blooms and succulent foliage of this fast-growing perennial form a beautiful flowering ground cover that is also edible and nutritious. Leaves and stems can be enjoyed raw or cooked, offering a slightly salty, delicious flavor. An excellent spinach substitute in salads! Prefers slightly dry soil. Gypsy Sunshine French Marigold - Upbeat yellow blooms on dwarf, bushy plants are ideal for beds, borders and containers. The pretty golden-yellow, double flowers make a magnificent natural dye for food and fabrics! Orange Flame Marigold - We love the unique blooms on this dwarf French type! An old Japanese variety, non-branching and grown for cut-flower use. Equally attractive in arrangements or in mass plantings in the garden. The tall, non-branching plants produce a single large flower in tones of yellow to orange, chocolate and sable. Florists adore the 8- to 10-inch flowers! Cupid Zinnia - 50 days. However, there is not many related papers or reports publicated related the study of the mountain celery in Taiwan, Chemical composition of essential oil, functional components of the different extract and antioxidant capability of mountain celery were studied in present study. The purpose of this study is to extract and analyze the essential oils composition of seeds, stems and leaves of mountain celery, and to fractionate the oils into different organic solvent (pentane, ether, acetone, methyl alcohol) by silica gel column chromatography seperation. Which were futher analyzed by GC-MS to determine its chemical composition and the fractionated’s antioxidant capability were also evaluated. In addition to that, blood lipemid reducing effect of mountain celery seeds(including : seeds powder, water extract, methanolic extract, essential oils and fractions of (pentane and ether). Were studied using male hamsters. The analysis of the functional components of mountain celery seeds and its water, methanolic extract. The obtained of essential oils from the seeds, stems and leaves of mountain celery was performed by steam distillion, and to found the seeds have the highest yield of essential oil of 0.4%(w/w), the second highest yield of essential oil are leaves of 0.03%, and the lowest yield of essential oil was determined to stems of 0.01%. The major of volatile components of mountain celery seeds, stems and leaves are the sesqueterpenes which contained 60.84%, 47.13%, 75.87%, where two major compounds are E-β-farnesene、germacrene D were found.

I am very honoured to be asked by the Board to serve as President and it is my intention to dedicate my efforts over the next year to the betterment of the Master Gardener organization. There are some important issues to contend with and we will need the help of all 740 Master Gardeners to achieve the kind of progress that we are hoping for. We need to strengthen the cohesiveness, the confidence and pride which we associate with being a Master Gardener. We are all members of the very same team, Master Gardeners of Ontario Inc., and we all benefit when we assist improve-ments elsewhere in the organization. We need to improve the sense of belonging and participation. We must do whatever is necessary to get MG's to know and understand each other in order to improve communication and teamwork. We have to face up to the issue of funding and realize that we can only improve our circumstances through a partial increase in membership fees. Many groups have demonstrated their strength in financial and operational terms. There is still a widespread problem of insufficient volunteering for positions of responsibility. Are your neighbouring groups doing as well as you are? Perhaps, the more successful groups could assist in the development of smaller, less successful ones.

    1 TAXONOMY, ORIGIN AND IMPORTANCE OF THE APIACEAE FAMILY JEAN-PIERRE REDURON* Mulhouse, France The Apiaceae (or Umbelliferae) is a plant family comprising at the present time 466 genera and about 3800 species (Plunkett et al., 2018). It is distributed nearly worldwide, but is most diverse in temperate climatic areas, such as Eurasia and North America. It is quite rare in tropical humid regions where it is limited to high mountains. Mediterranean and arid climatic conditions favour high species diversification. The Apiaceae are present in nearly all types of habi- tats, from sea-level to alpine zones: aquatic biotopes, grasslands, grazed pas- tures, forests including their clearings and margins, cliffs, screes, rocky hills, open sandy and gravelly soils, steppes, cultivated fields, fallows, road sides and waste grounds. The largest number of genera, 289, and the largest generic endemism, 177, is found in Asia. There are 126 genera in Europe, but only 17 are en- demic. Africa has about the same total with 121 genera, where North Africa encompasses the largest occurrence of 82 genera, 13 of which are endemic. North and Central America have a fairly high level of diversity with 80 genera and 44 endemics, where South America accommodates less generic diversity with 35 genera, 15 of which are endemic. Oceania is home to 27 genera and 18 endemics (Plunkett et al., 2018). The Apiaceae family appears to have originated in Australasia (region including Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, New Guinea, New Caledonia and several island groups), with this origin dated to the Late Cretaceous/ early Eocene, c.87 Ma (Nicolas and Plunkett, 2014).

    Parsley Trial at Elkus Research Garden 2011 Prepared by: Cynthia Morris, April 12, 2012 Master Gardener, San Mateo/ San Francisco Counties Introduction The Master Gardeners at Elkus Ranch designed a trial to test a variety of American and Italian parsleys comparing vigor, taste, and disease resistance in zone 17. Elkus Ranch is located near the coast approximately 6 miles south of Half Moon Bay. Over twelve different varieties of flat and curly parsley were planted including three types of Italian seed and seven varieties of American seed. I also planted a Japanese variety called ‘Mitsuba’ and a root parsley called ‘Arat’, to see how they compared to more familiar parsleys. Purpose The objective of the study was to observe the differences in growth and taste between Italian, American, Arat (parsnip rooted), and Japanese parsleys. Background History Our word parsley is a corruption of two Latin words, ‘petros’ and ‘selinon’ meaning ‘rock’ and ‘celery’, respectively. Dioscorides, a Greek physician of the early Roman Empire, is said to have given the plant its name, ‘Petioselunum crispum’. Parsley originally grew wild near the Mediterranean. The Greeks used it before recorded history. The ancient Greeks and Romans did not eat parsley. However, they did grow it in their gardens as a border plant, and thought it to be wonderful fodder for the chariot horses. Parsley was appreciated for its medicinal properties long before it became accepted as a food or spice. Because parsley was confused with false parsley (which is poisonous), the flat variety was not quick to catch on. However the curly leafed variety soon found its way to the plate and dishes.
