A candidate for federal listing as an endangered species, the wekiu bug was first discovered in 1979 by entomologists on Pu‘u Wekiu, the summit cinder cone. “Wekiu” is Hawaiian for “topmost” or “summit.” The wekiu bug belongs to the family Lygaeidae within the order of insects known as Heteroptera (true bugs). Most of the 26 endemic Hawaiian Nysius species use a tube-like beak to feed on native plant seed heads, but the wekiu bug uses its beak to suck the hemolymph (blood) from other insects. HOWARTH (Hawaii Biological Survey, Bishop Museum, PO Box 19000, Honolulu, Hawaii 96817, USA) The following are notable new distribution records for terrestrial isopods in Hawaii. Four species are newly recorded from the state, and many new island records are given for other species, especially for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, where only one species (Porcellionides pruinosus [Brandt]) was previously known. All included records are based on specimens deposited in Bishop Museum. Taiti & Ferrara (1991) presented new distribution records and taxonomic information on 27 species and provided an overview of the terrestrial isopod fauna of the Hawaiian Islands, and Nishida (1994) list- ed all species recorded from the islands together with the island distributions of each. We call special attention to the several endemic armadillid pillbugs that have not been recollected in more than 60 years. These are Hawaiodillo danae (Dollfus) and H. sharpi (Dollfus) from Kauai, H. perkinsi (Dollfus) from Maui, Spherillo albospinosus (Dollfus) from Oahu, and S. carinulatus Budde-Lund from Kauai. In addition, S. hawai- ensis Dana, previously recorded from Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, and Lanai was last collected on the main islands in 1933 on Oahu although it appears to be still common on Nihoa. We fear some species in this complex may be extinct and encourage field biologists to watch for them in potential refugia. Box 52 Hawaii National Park, HI 96718 November, 2004 Mauna Loa Reconnaissance 2003 Executive Summary and Acknowledgements The Mauna Loa Reconnaissance project was designed to generate archival and inventory/survey level recordation for previously known and unknown cultural resources within the high elevation zones (montane, sub-alpine, and alpine) of Mauna Loa. Field survey efforts included collecting GPS data at sites, preparing detailed site plan maps and feature descriptions, providing site assessment and National Register eligibility, and integrating the collected data into existing site data bases within the CRM Division at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO). Project implementation included both pedestrian transects and aerial transects to accomplish field survey components and included both NPS and Research Corporation University of Hawaii (RCUH) personnel. Reconnaissance of remote alpine areas was needed to increase existing data on historic and archeological sites on Mauna Loa to allow park managers to better plan for future projects. The reconnaissance report includes a project introduction; background sections including physical descriptions, cultural setting overview, and previous archeological studies; fieldwork sections describing methods, results, and feature and site summaries; and a section on conclusions and findings that provide site significance assessments and recommendations. -

Coring and excavations in a large sinkhole and cave system formed in an eolianite deposit on the south coast of Kaua`i in the Hawaiian Islands reveal a fossil site with remarkable preservation and diversity of plant and animal remains. Radiocarbon dating and investigations of the sediments and their fossil contents, including diatoms, invertebrate shells, vertebrate bones, pollen, and plant macrofossils, provide a more complete picture of prehuman ecological conditions in the Hawaiian lowlands than has been previously available. The evidence con®rms that a highly diverse prehuman landscape has been com- pletely transformed, with the decline or extirpation of most native species and their re- placement with introduced species. The stratigraphy documents many late Holocene extinctions, including previously un- described species, and suggests that the pattern of extirpation for snails occurred in three temporal stages, corresponding to initial settlement, late prehistoric, and historic impacts. -

Price Assistant Professor University of Hawaii-Manoa 1910 East-West Road Sherman Hall Rm 118 Honolulu, HI 96822 Phone: 808-956-7774 Email: [email protected] January 31, 2020 1 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 3 The Hawaiian Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni) is an endangered subspecies of the 4 Black-necked stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) that inhabits wetlands throughout the Hawaiian 5 Islands. Depredation of eggs and chicks by introduced predators is a major threat to Hawaiian 6 Stilt populations. Where and when a bird decides to nest may impact the likelihood of egg or 7 chick depredation. Nesting in close proximity to water may decrease depredation rates by 8 mammals, as water can act as a barrier to mammalian predators, does not hold scent, and 9 provides an obstacle-free escape route for chicks. Alternatively, some mammalian predators may 10 be attracted to water, and a number of aquatic species have been identified as predators of 11 Hawaiian Stilt chicks, including the American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus). Vegetation 12 height is also an important factor for egg and chick survival, as taller vegetation may help 13 conceal nests and chicks from predators, particularly aerial species. Additionally, depredation is 14 often not constant across the breeding season due to changes in parental activity, nest and chick 15 abundance, or habitat characteristics. The Hawaiian Stilt nests from February to September 16 across the Hawaiian Islands. -
