The National Herald December 23, 2006 The National Herald is once again honored to join you and your family for Christmas. In addition to the other contents in this issue, we have spotlighted two short and abridged stories written by Photios Kontoglou (1895–1965), a gifted and spiritual artist. These stories depict two unique celebrations of Christmas in Aivali, Asia Minor. As the Christmas season draws near, many of us will be attending Orthodox churches and experiencing the spiritual power of Greek icons. Kondoglou was the foremost iconographer in Greece in the 20th century. He wrote extensively on the sacred art of iconography, in fact he is considered the man responsible for the revival of Byzantine iconography in the 1930’s. Kontoglou was born in 1895 in Aivali, Asia Minor. Together with his paintings and his writings, he published more than 3000 studies and articles, fighting for the eternal values of the Or- thodoxy and the Greek Tradition. Although known primarily as an iconist and philosopher, Kontoglou was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature. He was awarded the Cross-of-the- Commander of the Phoenix and received the Distinction of Letters and Arts from the Academy of Athens in recognition of all his exceptional work. We are also continuing our theme of Christmas past with a touching story, from the perspective of a Greek soldier, during the Albanian campaign of 1940-1941. Included in this insert is a lighthearted piece by Paul Papadeas about celebrating Christmas Greek style in North Carolina during the 1980’s. As for the story of Christmas present we leave it up to you, and from all of the staff of The National Herald we wish you “Χρόνια Πολλά.” Beverley MacDougall Special Section Assistant Editor 2 CHRISTMAS 2006 THE NATIONAL HERALD, DECEMBER 23, 2006 and fill their hearts and minds with The National Herald peace. -

Mistrzowski Koniec Roku

Put the white flour into a bowl and sprinkle the salt on top. Then pour the yeast mixture over as well as the milk and eggs mixture and mix well into the flour. Work the dough for about 20 minutes (or more) until it’s no longer sticking to your hands. 5. Place the dough into an oiled bowl and cover it with a clean towel. YOUR O.A.T. ADVENTURE TRAVEL PLANNING GUIDE® Jewels of Bohemia: Czech Republic, Slovakia & Hungary 2022 Small Groups: 8-16 travelers—guaranteed! (average of 13) Overseas Adventure Travel ® The Leader in Personalized Small Group Adventures on the Road Less Traveled 1 Dear Traveler, At last, the world is opening up again for curious travel lovers like you and me. And the O.A.T. Jewels of Bohemia: Czech Republic, Slovakia & Hungary itinerary you’ve expressed interest in will be a wonderful way to resume the discoveries that bring us so much joy. You might soon be enjoying standout moments like these: In my mind, there is nothing more quaint and picturesque than the rural villages that dot the countryside of the Czech Republic. To immerse myself in their traditions and everyday life, I explore rural communities like Slavonice, a small village nestled on the border with Austria. You’ll see what I mean when you experience A Day in the Life of a small, family-run farm here, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet the owners, lend a hand with the daily farm chores, and share a Home-Hosted Lunch with your hosts around the warmth of a bonfire. I believe the most moving stories you’ll hear are from the locals who live and work in the regions you travel to around the world, and that is what I found to be true in Prague when I spoke with Zdenek Vacek, a local teacher and lifelong Prague resident, about the Velvet Revolution. I was saddened to hear the reality of their turbulent past under the Czech Communist regime. -

Customs and Traditions of Christmas and New Year in Transylvania
Customs and traditions of Christmas and New Year in Transylvania Brief History The Romanian culture is very rich in tradition and folklore. The culture steams from the Dacians, who once occupied the area in the past, among other influences are the Romans. Festivals feature brightly ornamented costumes with traditional dancing. Wood carvings, skilfully woven carpets, and pottery are some of the elements of traditional Romanian culture. Christmas traditions in Transylvania In Transylvania, Christmas and mid-winter celebrations last from 20th December to 7th January. The 20th is when people celebrate St. Ignatius's Day. It is traditional that if the family keep pigs, one is killed on this day. The meat from the pig is used in the Christmas meals. The Christmas celebrations really begin on Christmas Eve, 24th, when it's time to decorate the Christmas Tree. This is done in the evening of Christmas Eve. Carol singing is also a very popular part of Christmas in Transylvania. On Christmas Eve, children go out carol singing from house to house performing to the adults in the houses proclaiming the Savior. Adults go carol singing on Christmas Day evening and night. A traditional Romanian Carol is the 'Star Carol'. The star, made of colored paper and often decorated with tinsel, silver foil and sometimes bells, is put on a pole. In the middle of the star is a picture of baby Jesus or a nativity scene. Carol singers take the star with them when they go carol singing. Christmas food in Transylvania Traditional Romanian Christmas foods include Roast Gammon and Pork Chops , which is a slightly sour vegetable soup made with fermented bran and pork meatballs; cabbage leaves stuffed with ground pork and served with polenta; 'Cozonac' a rich fruit bread; Romanian doughnuts and cheesecakes.
