Crowdsourcing research and practice have taken this to heart, attempting to show that thousands of heads can be even better. This is not limited to leveraging a crowd’s knowledge, but also their creativity—the ability to generate something not only useful, but also novel. In practice, there are initiatives such as Free and Open Source Software communities developing innovative software. In research, the field of crowdsourced creativity, which attempts to design scalable support mechanisms, is blooming. However, both contexts still present many opportunities for advancement. In this dissertation, I seek to advance both the knowledge of limitations in current technologies used in practice as well as the mechanisms that can be used for large-scale support. The overall research question I explore is: “How can we support large-scale creative collaboration in distributed online communities?” I first advance existing support techniques by evaluating the impact of active support in brainstorming performance. Furthermore, I leverage existing theoretical models of individual idea generation as well as recommender system techniques to design CrowdMuse, a novel adaptive large-scale idea generation system. CrowdMuse models users in order to adapt itself to each individual. I evaluate the system’s efficacy through two large-scale studies. I also advance knowledge of current large-scale practices by examining common communication channels under the lens of Creativity Support Tools, yielding a list of creativity bottlenecks brought about by the affordances of these channels. Finally, I connect both ends of this dissertation by deploying CrowdMuse in an Open Source online i community for two weeks. I evaluate their usage of the system as well as its perceived benefits and issues compared to traditional communication tools. This dissertation makes the following contributions to the field of large-scale creativity: 1) the design and evaluation of a first-of-its-kind adaptive brainstorming system; 2) the evaluation of the effects of active inspirations compared to simple idea exposure; 3) the development and application of a set of creativity support design heuristics to uncover creativity bottlenecks; and 4) an exploration of large-scale brainstorming systems’ usefulness to online communities. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am forever in debt to both of my advisors, Winslow Burleson and Erin Walker, for their guidance, expertise, and patience throughout this long academic journey. This game was originally based on minetest_game, minus a couple GitHub: VanessaE of mods that I don't like, with a number of minor things changed, and a number of extra mods added on. Since then, IRC: VanessaE many things have changed - while much of the base game is still the same, some stuff is different, and many more mods In-game: have been added. Many of the mods contained in this game have been tweaked from their deault states. Mods are VanessaEzekowitz generally kept up-to-date, and from time to time, if an interesting feature pops up in minetest_game, I may port that over also. Website This game is in use on my Creative server and my Survival server. Both servers have a few extra mods installed for their specific needs, but should give you a pretty good idea nonetheless.

    Framework for Real-Time Editing of Endless Procedural Terrains Johan Klokkhammer Helsing Master of Science in Computer Science Submission date: July 2014 Supervisor: Anne Cathrine Elster, IDI Norwegian University of Science and Technology Department of Computer and Information Science Problem description Game developers commonly re-implement terrain generating code for each project they are working on, thus using up valuable development time. Furthermore, terrain generating code is often written in compiled languages, and this usually requires the code to be recompiled and the application relaunched each time a change has been made to the generator. Games and other virtual environments often use terrains generated using the implicit procedural techniques of Perlin and Musgrave. These techniques have also been applied to heightmap-generating software and 3D-modeling software. Such programs commonly offer a node editor letting the user visually edit an expression tree consisting of common procedural algorithms and mathematical functions. The results of the changes can often be viewed in real time. These packages, however, do not let you run the generation on the client. A heightmap has to be generated in its entirety first; and can then be imported by the game or application as a non-procedural model. Hence, many of the desirable properties of procedural generation are lost in the process, such as the ability to generate infinite worlds or a new world each time a game is started. The goal of this project is to combine the ease of use of visually editing an expression tree in a node editor with the ability to generate terrain on demand at the player's computer.
