Firefly Season 2” Is the Only Work of Fan Fiction I’Ve Ever Written, and I Wouldn’T Be Surprised If It’S the Only One I Ever Write
Firefly 201 + script bible 30th January 2016 revision Mike Le Page Author’s notes: The act of creating art is something I hold sacred, and I have no interest in shitting on someone else’s work, especially someone I respect as much as Joss Whedon. The following spec script for “Firefly season 2” is the only work of fan fiction I’ve ever written, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the only one I ever write. I only wrote it because I had a waking dream that provided a neat way to tie up several loose ends from the series/movie as well as a way to bring Wash back that performs a critical plot function and isn’t just fan-service. This was written with longer-format episodes in mind. The crazy idea I had was that Firefly would be the ideal property with which to trial a kind of in-cinema, once-a-month mini-movie format which would promote the community of fans gathering at cinemas and allow studios to recoup the costs of shooting more expensive “TV” shows – much the same way that iMAX cinemas sold out for showings of Game of Thrones episodes. The idea was a second season of 8x 80-90 minute minimovies of Firefly, shot in a LOTR style shoot and released once a month over a single calendar year. This idea is in no way necessary for this script to work, but it perhaps goes some way to explain the length of this script. What you’ll notice is that I’ve erred on the side of changing things considerably from the first season/movie, separating the crew and mothballing Serenity for reasons to be explained: I don’t think it’s plausible that we could come back to the crew 10+ years later and have it be exactly the same. -

It Reveals Who I Really Am”: New Metaphors, Symbols, and Motifs in Representations of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Popular Culture
“IT REVEALS WHO I REALLY AM”: NEW METAPHORS, SYMBOLS, AND MOTIFS IN REPRESENTATIONS OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS IN POPULAR CULTURE By Summer Joy O’Neal A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Middle Tennessee State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Angela Hague, Chair Dr. David Lavery Dr. Robert Petersen Copyright © 2013 Summer Joy O’Neal ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There simply is not enough thanks to thank my family, my faithful parents, T. Brian and Pamela O’Neal, and my understanding sisters, Auburn and Taffeta, for their lifelong support; without their love, belief in my strengths, patience with my struggles, and encouragement, I would not be in this position today. I am forever grateful to my wonderful director, Dr. Angela Hague, whose commitment to this project went above and beyond what I deserved to expect. To the rest of my committee, Dr. David Lavery and Dr. Robert Petersen, for their seasoned advice and willingness to participate, I am also indebted. Beyond these, I would like to recognize some “unofficial” members of my committee, including Dr. Elyce Helford, Dr. Alicia Broderick, Ari Ne’eman, Chris Foss, and Melanie Yergau, who graciously offered me necessary guidance and insightful advice for this project, particularly in the field of Disability Studies. Yet most of all, Ephesians 3.20-21. iii ABSTRACT Autism has been sensationalized by the media because of the disorder’s purported prevalence: Diagnoses of this condition that was traditionally considered to be quite rare have radically increased in recent years, and an analogous fascination with autism has emerged in the field of popular culture. -

Pamela J. Cross1* and Richard Wright2 *1Archaeological Sciences, University of Bradford, Bradford UK, [email protected] 2Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, University of Sydney, Australia Abstract American celebrity aviator Amelia Earhart was lost over the Pacific Ocean during her press-making 1937 round-the-world flight. The iconic woman pilot remains a media interest nearly 80 years after her disappearance, with perennial claims of finds pinpointing her location. Though no sign of the celebrity pilot or her plane have been definitively identified, possible skeletal remains have been attributed to Earhart. The partial skeleton recovered and investigated by British officials in 1940. Their investigation concluded the remains were those of a stocky, middle-aged male. A private historic group re- evaluated the British analysis in 1998 as part of research to establish Gardner (Nikumaroro) Island as the crash site. The 1998 report discredited the British conclusions and used cranial analysis software (FORDISC) results to suggest the skeleton was potentially a Northern European woman, and consistent with Amelia Earhart. -
6 Killing Methods and Equipement in the Faroese Pilot Whale Hunt
KILLING METHODS AND EQUIPMENT IN THE FAROESE PILOT WHALE HUNT NAMMCO/99/WS/2 (Translation from Danish*) Jústines Olsen, Senior Veterinarian Faroe Veterinary Service Varðagøtu 85 FO-100 Tórshavn Faroe Islands * English translation of paper: “Om avlivningsmetoder og udstyr for færøsk grindefangst”(NAMMCO/99/WS/2), presented to the NAMMCO Workshop on Hunting Methods, Nuuk, Greenland, 9 – 11 February 1999. Abstract Pilot whales have been hunted for food in the Faroes since the early days of Norse settlement in the Viking age (800-900). Both the methods of hunting and the distribution of the catch are regulated by public authorities. Originally, regulations were primarily concerned with the collection by the authorities of a tax or tythe from the catch. There were strict requirements that each boat and whaling bay was to be properly equipped with the suitable hunting equipment. The whale hunt today is in general carried out in the same way as it has always been done, but there have been significant improvements in the techniques used, as well as in the organisation of the drive and in the regulation of whaling locations. This paper describes the equipment used for driving and securing whales and for slaughtering. The equipment and methods are assessed in terms of current regulations and the results of analyses of killing efficiency are presented, and the extent of loss of wounded and dead whales is also mentioned. The paper also presents a brief overview of regulations and methods for the hunting of other small cetaceans in the Faroes. The hunt in general as well as procedures for the authorisation of whaling bays are described elsewhere. -
Bones, Chalk and Cheese
Bones, Chalk and Cheese The pilot of the series Bones, from 2005, is a clear example of two characters who not only have distinctive voices, but are from different metaphorical planets. The show proved to be extremely successful and durable for Fox; it ran for twelve seasons, ending in 2017. When Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) talk to each other, it’s clear that one is from Mars and the other from Venus—but the stereotypical roles have been reversed. Brennan is scientific and technical; she has no idea about anything to do with pop culture at all. He’s exactly the opposite. I remember watching the excellent pilot (written by Hart Hanson, the showrunner) and noticing that whenever anybody says something that has any reference to pop culture, Brennan says, “I don't know what that means.” It’s a brilliant, deadpan catch phrase, and what’s fun about it is that she really doesn’t. She is so hyper-focused on being a forensic anthropologist that it’s all she really knows. She’s not connected to her emotional life and doesn’t understand humor —there’s an element of her that’s almost autistic. She lives in the world yet doesn’t really notice and participate in slang and cultural references as most of us tend to do. So Brennan’s distinctive voice is out of step and out of time. !1 Brennan and Booth are also out of step with each other—although she doesn't understand pop culture, he does. He’s street smart and has a lot of bravado and swagger, and she’s restrained, scientific and kind of emotionally shut down. -

BONES: THE FORENSIC FILES PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Paul Ruditis | 160 pages | 27 Oct 2009 | Titan Books Ltd | 9781845765903 | English | London, United Kingdom A Conspiracy of Bones Author, Kathy Reichs Shares her Forensic Files with Us | Better Reading Postmortem changes in the bones indicate that the body was burned and buried without embalming. The cranium was sectioned by a medical examiner, who worked with a forensic anthropologist after the remains were exhumed. The light color of the sawed edge of the cranial vault indicates that this cut occurred during the recent autopsy. Several teeth were also knocked out. Charring is evident on the top of the cranium and portions of the ankle and elbow bones — body parts least protected by soft tissues. How much and where the skeleton is burned gives information about the circumstances of death and the body's position. Erosion of bone can occur even in a coffin. The innominates and sacrum show erosion on the surface in contact with the bottom of the coffin. The pattern of the erosion indicates the body's position in the grave. As a result of the autopsy's findings and related criminal investigations in this case, a suspect was brought to trial and found guilty of murder and arson. Skip to main content. Brown, Ph.D., CCN Nutrition Education and Consulting Service 605 Franklin Park Drive East Syracuse, NY 13057 Tel: 315 -437-9384 Fax: 315-432-9231 [email protected] Confidential information Pilot Clinical Study of Dietary Supplement, Young Bones (A Traditional Chinese Herbal Formula) For Improvement of Aging, including Bone Mineral Loss, Pain, Mobility And Nocturnal Polyuria in Women Final 12-Week Report 12/1/2003 Introduction March 2003 the Osteoporosis Education Project began a clinical pilot study of the traditional Chinese herbal formula known as Young Bones. The aim of this clinical trial was to assess the effect of this herbal formula on aging/menopause symptoms including bone mineral loss, pain, mobility problems and excessive nighttime urination in postmenopausal women. This 12 week pilot study had two endpoints: (a) changes in bone resorption at 6 and 12 weeks, and; (b) changes in aging/menopausal symptoms at 12 weeks. Bone resorption was assessed with the Ostex International serum N-telopeptide assay (Serum NTx). The “least significant change” for this assay is 14% at a confidence interval of 90%. The symptoms were assessed via a questionnaire developed by Sagittarius Life Science, Corp. By the end of June, 2003 the last subjects were successfully screened and incorporated into the study. By the end September the last serum samples of this 12 weeks study were collected. The final 12-week symptom questionnaires were also administered at this time. The study in its entirety included 14 regular subjects, plus two extra, grouped as follows: • A Later Post-Menopause Group This group involved women more than five years past menopause.
