Campout this weekend Lake Patagonia

I am looking forward to our Campout this weekend at Lake Patagonia. Picking and grinning will get underway Friday afternoon!! Saturday we will be jamming all day followed by a potluck and then some more jamming!!! Sunday morning will be a gospel jam! If you haven't made reservations yet, sorry it's sold out. There maybe a Friday night spot left but no Saturday night, unless there is last minute cancellation. Check the lakes website for that. You can still come down (hour and a half drive) Saturday to jam and join in on the potluck. If you are coming to the potluck, bring a dish to share, your beverage and eating utensils. I will have some extra paper plates and utensils for the day trippers or those that forgot. Should be a beautiful weekend and a great time to be had by all!!! See you there!!!!! Our Annual Bluegrass Festival by Dave Polston Hey Pickers and Grinners, save this date, March 20-22, 2020!!! We will all be gathering at Gladden Farms Park for our annual festival. Hey Pickers and Grinners, save this date, March 20-22, 2020!!! We will all be gathering at Gladden Farms Park for our annual festival. We have a great group of people heading up the committee to ensure we have a successful weekend!

I would like to thank the following people for stepping up and volunteering to head the sub committees. Holly Tripp and Dale Vickroy will be my co-chairs, others who will work on specific duties to make sure the weekend is a success are, Paul Deo, Curt Holmes, Daniel Bieg, Jim Wagner, Carole Wothe, Suzette Sommerer, Brady Parker, Eileen Farland, Doug McMasters, Jonathon Grinder, Marlene Simpson, Susan Kellogg and Bonnie Lohman. These people are essential to a successful festival, doing all the work needed to make for a great weekend.

The town of Marana, led by Bob Stinson, has been a great partner to help us get this festival up and running. During the last 5 years they have provided or financed many essential things needed for the festival. Each year we have increased and adjusted our budget to cover these expenses. This year will be the final year of their assistance. Our budget will have about a 20% increase next year. One sure way to reach this new budget is income from attendance. Everyone of you can help by attending and bring 2 new people and introduce them to the wonderful world of bluegrass!!!

This year we are going to add a "kids zone" to make the festival more family friendly. Ideas for this include crafts, face painting, Hulu hoops, games, etc. If you have any ideas or supplies that would help please let us know.

We will start making some small "save the date" flyers so everyone can start passing out to friends and neighbors. We will later have bigger handouts and posters available. We will use a service to distribute them to a selected list but each of can put up a poster or two around your neighborhood. We are the best advertising we can afford!! Put one up where you get your oil change, haircut, have breakfast out, etc. You can also let those businesses know that they can also help by being a sponsor. Information for that can be found on the website or by sending leads to Holly Tripp.

We will also be having a silent auction (Holly Tripp) and an instrument raffle (Daniel Bieg). If you have any leads to help those please let us know. Those are major financial players to our festival income.

Last year we had some great jams in the campgrounds!! We hope to continue that this year!! At our first meeting we discussed possible bands and formats. We should have more details on that by the next newsletter. Stay tuned! PAGE 4 GRASS CLIPPINGS VOLUME 25 ISSUE 4

Reply via email to [email protected] or call Dave Polston - 520-245-6126. Notes from Pete Wernick, Dr. Banjo I love bluegrass and what it’s done for my life. I love the community, the grounding in honest, solid values, the spirit of both teamwork and independence… and … it sounds good! I think more people should play bluegrass and tap into what it offers. And truly, I think the world would be a better place if more people played bluegrass. Adults, kids, everybody.

Bluegrass is a rare type of music, in that it is almost always played entirely by ear. Virtually all great bluegrass has been played without reference to written notation of any kind. It grows out of experience, little by little, in a group context. It is only in the last few decades that the notes of songs and tunes have become readily available in printed form. Tablature has greatly facilitated learning, no doubt. In a short few years, bluegrass teachers, instruction books and videos have proliferated enormously to keep up with the demand. But tablature is not necessary, and is certainly not sufficient to learn how to play bluegrass music. Earl Scruggs once told me: “I have no idea how anyone can play a tune exactly the same way twice in a row.” PAGE 10 GRASS CLIPPINGS VOLUME 25 ISSUE 4
