It is an important conceptual contribution which respects the users intelligence and creativity and allows one the freedom to remain oneself musically while exploring unheard of possibilities for the guitar." ----NEY MELLO Preface The Picking Hand Grimoirium provides in one volume, the necessary exercises for the development of the picking hand for string instrumentalist of 4, 5, 6 or 7 string instruments. The exercises focus on the “micro” movements of the picking hand through permutations of strings and notes-per-strings. The musician can isolate, and then develop one specific picking hand movement with the exerecises. By using this method, it insures complete picking hand development before adding the fretting hand. Since the exercises are “micro” picking hand movements only, detailed attention can be placed on technique, tempo, rhythm, dynamics and consistent string attack for optimum picking hand development. The exercises can and should be applied to ALL picking techniques that the musician chooses in their form of expression such as free strokes, rest strokes, alternate picking, economy picking, hybrid picking, finger picking, tremolos, slapping, double thumping, plucking, etc. As the musician progresses through the various exercises, new picking patterns will be encountered that could aid the musician in composing new and unique ideas. The permutations in the Picking Hand Grimoirium were created by computer program developed by the author. This insures that ALL permutations of strings and notes-per-strings are included. -

This is what a lot of mandolin players are using all the time and it's easy! Closed Position means using no open strings. Basic Double Stop Series: (AB-I) Double stops are one of the mandolin's signature sounds. In this class, we will learn a basic double stop series that moves up and down the neck for both major and minor chords. Freeing Up the Right Hand (B-I) This class is geared towards folks who have learned a number of fiddle tunes and have gotten pretty comfortable playing those melodies but are wondering how to speed them up a bit or breathe a little more life into them now. AY17-18 Montgomery County Community College MUS 152 Commercial & Jazz Guitar Studies 1-1-2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to further develop the skills students have acquired on their own or in Guitar I class. This course will introduce intermediate techniques focusing on plectrum style guitar playing in the Jazz/Commercial genres. Students will develop the necessary skills to function as a guitarist by learning to 1) play a variety of accompaniment styles, 2) improvise using scales and arpeggio patterns combined with a knowledge of chord-scale relationships, 3) read chord charts and melody lines and 4) perform a continually expanding repertoire. Double Stops
Double stops When playing double stops, notice that the bow pressure should be unequally distributed between the two strings involved. Generally, the string producing the lowest pitch should be given the highest pressure. Here is why: Figure 1: Perfect fifth. The D‐ and G‐strings slip on the string 150 and 100 times, respectively. The string with the lowest pitch shows larger amplitude. The bow’s position relative to the active string length (β) is about 1/7 for both strings, counted from the bridge. Imagine the two open cello strings G2 and D3, swinging with approximately 100 and 150 Hz, respectively. Ideally, the two strings should have been bowed with two different speeds in order to produce comparable tone colors, which of course in practice is not possible. However, real life implies that the upper string has to slip back on the bow‐hair ribbon 150 times per second, while the lower string makes 100 only. If the bow is moving with a speed of 15 cm/second, each flyback on the G‐string (100 Hz) will thus be one‐and‐a‐half millimeter, while on the D‐string (150 Hz) the flyback will be one millimeter. (Frequency × Flyback distance = Bow speed.) Even if these two strings had the same wave resistance1, the G‐string will require a higher friction force than the D‐string to be pulled out to sufficient amplitude, particularly during the onset transient. In the case of playing octave, where the D‐string is stopped at the forth (G3) the raise in frequency will demand a further reduction of bow pressure, since the flyback now must be reduced to a mere 0.75 mm, i.e., the half of the flyback on the on the open G‐string (see Fig. -

Guitar Best Practices Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 Many schools today offer guitar classes and guitar ensembles as a form of music instruction. While guitar is a popular music choice for students to take, there are many teachers offering instruction where guitar is their secondary instrument. The NAfME Guitar Council collaborated and compiled lists of Guitar Best Practices for each year of study. They comprise a set of technical skills, music experiences, and music theory knowledge that guitar students should know through their scholastic career. As a Guitar Council, we have taken careful consideration to ensure that the lists are applicable to middle school and high school guitar class instruction, and may be covered through a wide variety of method books and music styles (classical, country, folk, jazz, pop). All items on the list can be performed on acoustic, classical, and/or electric guitars. Chapter V The Art of Picking Mike shares his picking concept and explains the importance of reaching for the sound in your head to guide your technical development rather than ascribing to any particular picking style. The Art of Picking “Every style, every player Mike insists that there isn’t one way to pick, nor is there - they all pick differently.” one kind of pick that will help you sound better. Mike points out that if you analyze various guitarists through- out history, there does not seem to be a concensus on picking methodology. Therefore, Mike explains that the key factor in understanding how to pick is understanding how you personally hear your musical ideas. Mike likes how horn players sound. He always knew that he wanted to emulate the legato and flow that horn players attain by blowing through their instrument with one breath. Mike wanted his lines to sound similar to this legato sound, so he devised his own picking style, a combination of sweep picking/economy picking and legato playing (hammer-ons/ pull-offs). Mike also utilizes more downstrokes when he wants to sharpen the attack and articulation of his notes. Mike recommends taking multiple bebop melodies or 8th note driven melodies and making them sound as clear, grooving, and articulate as possible. Experiment with different picking techniques according to how you want the melody to sound. Focusing on the sound in your head will guide you naturally through the process of discovering the best picking method for you. Rotten Taters Is a Snapshot of Some of the Material Mike Has Begun to Do in His Solo Endeavors
MIKE COMPTON “This recording is pure gold, through and through.” - Glen Herbert, KDHX Rotten Taters is a snapshot of some of the material Mike has begun to do in his solo endeavors. It’s a project which for the first time lets us see something that we’ve only glimpsed in the past Compton playing by himself, unaccompanied and undirected. And it’s simply stellar. For Compton, it’s all about rhythm, with the mandolin serving principally as a rhythmic instrument rather than a melodic one. These days, for this style of playing, he is the player that all others are compared to; if you play old-time or traditional bluegrass mandolin, you want to play like Mike Compton. Here, for the first time, is pure, unadorned Compton. Of the fifteen songs and tunes here, six are from Compton’s own pen. Tracks like “How Do you Want Your Rollin’ Done” and “I’ll Tell you About the Women” seem, in a sense, like portraits of Compton himself, his effervescence and humor laid bare. Of note, the cut “Forever Has Come to and End” is stark and longing, excellently accompanied only by mandolin chords and cross-picking, bringing out the desperation of the lyric. “Jenny Lynn” is a tribute to Monroe, staying close to Monroe’s style, as is the original piece “Wood Butcher’s Walkabout”, which is like a master class in the slides that are a hallmark of Compton’s playing. “Mike has taken a passel of influences -- “old Instruments Used on This Recording: time fiddle tunes, rock salt and nails Paul Duff F5 Mandolin, 2011.
