This folder contained the following: 1. Burial records from the church register of Elmore Reformed Church, 1858 – 1888. These records can also be found in the Cemetery Data Base. The hard copy of these burial records can be found only in Cemetery Series Book 7. Burial records vary considerably in the amount of detail given, depending on the pastor or scribe. These appear to have been photocopied from a hand-written set, which in turn had been copied from the original register. In some instances, the writer of this first hand- written copy wrote far into the right-hand margin, that when this was first photocopied, a small amount of the far right side did not get photocopied. Mr. Reese’s note at the end of the list of burials reads: These records I found at the United Church of Christ in Campbellsport. [Note: This burial record is also included in the Cemetery Data Base, even though it is not a cemetery record per se, but is rather taken from a church death register. It could include persons who died at Elmore, but were buried elsewhere. Also, the complete cemetery record for that period may well include names of persons who died elsewhere, but were buried at Elmore, and are therefore not listed here.] 2. A list of 1874 Town of Ashford business places 3. A short biography of Rev. Matthew Edward Heigl, pastor of St. Martin’s Church, Ashford 4. Short history of St. Martin’s Church, Ashford, WI, written by Rev. George S. Etzel. No date. Includes abstract record for St. Martin’s 5. Cemetery Record: Rauch Cemetery. Will not be found here. 1. Death Register, Elmore Reformed Church, 1858-1888 ♦ These records are not a cemetery register, or a list of tombstones inscriptions done by a genealogical or historical society. They are part of a church register. Mr. Reese wrote at the bottom of the last page: These records I found at the United Church of Christ in Campbellsport. ♦ We have provided two arrangements: - as given in the record, which is basically chronological - in alphabetical order ♦ [Sic] indicates that what was written appears to be an error, but it is copied as written. ♦ Notations by the person who did the computer entry are in brackets, in italics. ♦ The surname Jung is sometimes spelled Yung, and occasionally Young, even when it refers to the same person. I have consistently spelled it Jung for the convenience of researchers who use the Edit/find feature. ♦ There is SOME overlap with the records found in R-064, German Evangelical Reformed Church of Elmore, but the records are clearly not identical. ♦ Note: When these deaths occurred, Elmore was called Ashford. When the record states that someone lived in Ashford, the writer is referring to either the town we now know as Elmore, or Ashford Township. The village we now know as Ashford was hardly a village at that time.

3. Biography of Rev. Matthew Edward Heigl

Rev. Matthew Edward Heigl, pastor of St. Martin’s Church of Ashford, Wis., was born in Tyrol, , on the 2nd of June, 1844, and is a son of Joseph and Josephine (Florian) Heigl. His father is a director in the government mines of his native country, a position he has held for many years. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Heigl numbered twelve children, but only three are now living: Matthew E., Mary, and Paulina. Joseph, who represented the Board of Commercefrom the State of Kaernthen, in the Austrian government, and was also a member of the Supreme Court, died in 1886. Frank, Guido, Fred, Gusstaff, and Paul are all deceased; Matthew and Mary are the next in order of birth, and were followed by Anistena, Martens, Josephina, and Angela, who are also deceased; Paulina is the youngest of the family. From five until twenty-two years of age, Father Heigl spent his life as a student. He attended the University at Innsbruck, the capitol city of Tyrol, as a student of theology, and at the age of twenty-two years was ordained a priest of the Canon of St. Norbert, of which he had become a member when nineteen years of age. In 1871 he was sent by his abbot to America to become an assistant of the old missionary, Adalbert Inama, who was then located at Roxbury, Dane Co., Wis. He made his home in that county for nine years. One year prior to his removal, 1885, the death of Father Inama occurred. During his residence in Dane County, Father Heigl had been

Page 20 of 26 instrumental in the erection of a large and fine church at Roxbury, and another at Franklin, Milwaukee county.

On the 8th of July, 1886, he came to Fond du Lac county, locating in Ashford, where he was placed in charge of the parish of St. Martin’s. During the succeeding three years he has labored with untiring zeal, and his work has been very effective. He also has charge of St. Mary’s Church at Lomira. He has relieved the church from all indebtedness, and has added many improvements, and is an active and able leader in church and charitable work. He is the spiritual director of the Ashford branch of the Catholic Knignts, of which he was the founder and is also State delegate. In connection with that branch, he also organized eleven others, and has done much good in that line. He enjoys the confidence and love of his congregation, and is honored and respected throughout the entire community. Genial in disposition, and gentlemanly in deportment, he wins friends wherever he goes, and is widely known throughout Fond du Lac County. In politics, he is a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party.

4. Short History of St. Martin’s Church, Ashford (Consists of two short articles, all written on St. Martin’s Congregation letterhead)

The first article: One of the earliest churches in Fond du Lac County was St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church in Ashford (Rt. 1, Campbellsport, Wis.). As a parish, its history began in 1847 with a small group of settlers who had immigrated [Sic] from the Moselle and Rhine river valleys in Germany. Among them were the Bergs, Leisses, Greifs, Jaegers, Hilberts, Thelens, and Fleischman families.

In the first days of parish history, the settlers had Holy Mass offered for them in private homes by a visiting missionary priest, Father Schraudenbach. Later, divine services were held in a small shack on a hill with a crucifix erected on a tree stump. The Reverend Michael Beitter was the first resident pastor of the congregation. In his time, the first church was built of logs (16’ X 20’) in 1849. Seven years later, and then under the direction of Father Kasper Rehrl, the second church was built somewhat larger than the first. In 1870, the church of field stones, which now stands on one of our many hills in Ashford, was built while Fathers Mukerheide, Michaels, and Schilling were successively pastors.

Father Max Schmid came to St. Martin’s in September of 1898 and under his supervision, the parish school was built in 1900. Dominican Sisters from Racine taught the parish school from 1899 to 1908; they were succeeded by the School Sisters of St. Francis of Milwaukee who taught here through the years 1908 to 1968.

The forgoing facts present only a few of the various stages of material progress in the long history of St. Martin’s in Ashford. Interwoven and underlying these events was the spiritual motivation of the many successive priests, the long list of teaching sisters, and

Page 21 of 26 the generations of parish members. Dedication, generosity, and self-sacrifice were always characteristic.

Rev. George S. Etzel, Pastor

The second article In the year 1845 the first settlers came here in what is now known as St. Martin of Tours Parish in Ashford. They were immigrants from Moselle [Sic] and Rhine River valleys in Germany. Among them were the Bergs, Leisses, Greifs, Jaegers, Jaegers [Sic], Hilberts, Thelens, and Fleischman families.

At first, holy Mass and services were held in the homes of settlers by missionaries who traveled this part of the country. In 1847 the first log church was built a short distance west of what is now known as the “B’s Hive”. The first pastor was Michael Bitter, who served until 1855. The Reverend Casper Rehrl served from 1855 to 1864, and was followed by August Dunst until 1865. He was followed by Franz Spath for a short time, and was followed by Rev. H. Mukerheide who remained until 1869. Rev. A. Michels took over for a few months until Father J. Weller came and in 1870 the present church was built of field stones.

FROM ANOTHER ARTICLE: Seven years after the building of the first church, a second church, somewhat larger than the first, was built and located in the southern section on the present cemetery, near the existing cross. This second church was built under the direction of Rev. Casper Rehrl, a name and man prominent in the early history of this territory. Father Casper Rehrl was a holy missionary who had worked in the wilds of Wisconsin since 1845. He built numbers of churches and established schools in the vast territory around Lake Winnebago and the shores of Lake Michigan. The name Casper Rehrl, is recorded in the founding history of St. Joseph and St. Louis Parish, Fond du Lac, St. Michael Parish, Dotyville, Holy Cross Parish, Mt. Calvary, the parishes in Johnsburg, Marytown, Holy Cross, and Barton Father Rehrl was instrumental in founding the St. Agnes Sisters’ Community, Fond du Lac. Father Casper Rehrl traveled by foot many times from Barton to Green Bay.

In 1871 Father Spath returned to Ashford and stayed for ten years. He was succeeded by Father Peter Freiden. The latter left in 1884 and the Reverend B. Nuttman served as pastor temporarily until Rev. J. Korfgagen came. He was followed by Rev. Math. Heigl in 1886. Father Heigl had the first cross erected on the hill east of the church. This first of three crosses was erected back in 1880 [Sic]. Father Math Heigl is buried here in the parish cemetery.

Father Nuttman returned in 1890 and remained in Ashford until 1896. The next pastor was Rev. Henry Blum, who stayed until 1898, when the Rev. Max Schmid took over. It was under the leadership of Rev. Schmid that the present school building was erected in 1900. Father Schmid died in 1904, and was succeeded by the Rev. Theo Toeller. In the

Page 22 of 26 pastorate of Father Toeller a new sanctuary and sacristies were added to the south end of the church building. New stations were erected, a wood carving for the main altar was imported from Austria, and the interior of the church was decorated by an Austrian artist in 1909 (Joseph Hahn). The paintings of Joseph Hahn are still present in the church; these were renovated and preserved by George Josten in 1973.

Father Theo Toeller left Ashford in 1922, having served the parish of St. Martin for 18 years. He was succeeded by the Rev. Alois Fiorioli for a year and a half. The second cross was erected by Father Alois Fiorioli in 1923. Then came Father John Gruenewald who served the people of Ashford from 1924 to 1948. In his 24 years, he had electric lights and a new organ installed. During the sick leave of Father Gruenewald, the parish was served by Father Cyril Spieglhoff.

Then in 1948 the Rev. Francis Knoerschild arrived and remained until 1951 when he died here. In the same year Rev. Alois Kraus was assigned to St. Martin Parish; he had new lighting fixtures, flooring, and pews installed in church. Father Kraus left St. Martin in 1954 for another parish in East Troy. But he returned again in 1956. In the meantime the parish was served by Rev. Leonard Koehring and Rev. Francis Sutscheck. Father Kraus continued to serve the parish until 1963.

Rev. Alois Kraus was followed by Rev. JosephCconley who ministered to the people from 1963-1966. Then came Rev. Linus Schmelzer who stayed from 1966 to 1967. The present pastor, the Rev. George Etzel, followed him here. [The following sentence was inserted here by Mr. Reese: The third cross was erected by Fr. Linus Schmelzer in 1966.]

In 1970 a new addition was added to the parish church, providing a new front entrance, new facilities, and the parish hall was remodeled and painted. In 1973 a new hot water base-board heating system was installed in the church building; new confessional and side altar shrines were added, and the interior of the church was renovated and redecorated, but retaining the original antiquity.

This is a hurried history because much more should be added about the dedication of the teaching sisters who left in 1968 when the parish school was closed; much more could be written of the accomplishments of the priests who served here, and most of all by the people who make up the parish. Many of the families still with us today are well established names that you will find throughout the long history of St. Martin Parish in Ashford. The parish, as of January 1, 1975, shows 101 families and 388 members.

9. ELMORE PASTOR PREACHED TO EARLY REFORMED CONGREGATION HERE 1865 (Author not named)

Page 24 of 26 Evangelical and Reformed The congregation was founded by German and Swiss emigrants who established their homes in and near the village of New Cassel, the present Campbellsport. Occasional worship services were at first conducted in the homes of these new settlers by the Rev. Accola, then pastor of the Reformed Church of Ashford, now Elmore. The Rev. J.F. Vergenz, who succeeded Pastor Accola, conducted the first regular worship services in the District 12 School in the New Cassel [school on Forest Street] [The part in brackets was hand-written in Mr. Reese’s writing.] This was in the year 1867. In the following year, 1868, July 26, twenty-seven men assembled in the same school house and organized “The German Evangelical and Reformed Church”. A house of worship substantial in construction and costing about Three Thousand Dollars was built the same summer and dedicated in the fall of 1868. The old church stood where the present St. Joseph’s Convent of the Sisters of St. Francis is located. The original lots were donated by Mr. M. Findeisen. The men who formed the first consistory were: Peter Johann, President, A. Holzhauer, Secretary, David Gudex, Jacob Terlinden, Martin Knickel, Trustees; Peter Johann and P. Gaul, Elders; F. Dickman and C. Steinecke, deacons. Originally the congregation was united with the Elmore Reformed Church under the pastorate of Rev. J.C. Vergenz until 1874. The new pastor was Rev. J.C. Huecker who served from 1874-1883.

During the pastorate of Rev. S. Elliker, 1883-1886, the congregation became independent of the Elmore Church and was served only for a short time in 1887 by Rev. Rucklin, a native Swiss, who left the same year because of doctrinal differences between him and his flock. Pastor H. Rusterholz, then minister at Elmore, shepherded the Campbellsport people until 1888, when the congregation called their former pastor, the Rev. J.C. Huecker. During his pastorate the old parsonage was bought for 1300 dollars and the present Ladies Aid organized in the year 1892. This society was responsible for the buying of the church bell which still rings in our new church.

Rev. Huecker’s pastorate ended in 1906 and his successor was Rev. Calvin M. Zenk. Under his leadership the first English service was held and Confirmation instruction given in both English and German. The congregation then called for its next pastor. The Rev. Wm. Landsiedel who served from 1908 to 1913. Plans for a new parsonage failed but the old manse was renovated and certain improvements were made.

After Pastor Landsiedel’s resignation in 1913, Rev. Wm. Zenk became the minister of this congregation. He was endowed with fine musical talents and while serving as pastor here he also was Professor of music in our Mission House college. He passed away unexpectedly in the spring of 1927. Rev. John Scheib became his successor from 1927-1930. It was during his stay that the W.M.S. was organized, the envelope system introduced and the transition from the to the English completed.

The congregation then called for its next pastor, Rev. Gilbert O. Wernecke. Under his guidance the old church was sold to the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent for the price

Page 25 of 26 of $6000. The last service in the old church was held on January 24, 1932. Plans for a new church were made immediately, and during the summer months of the same year present church was erected at the cost of about Ten Thousand Dollars. The dedication took place November 20, 1932. The building committee consisted of the following brethren: Herbert Schlomer, President; John Terlinden and the members of the consistory, namely Elders Wm. Ferber, Wm. Geidel, Peter Senn, Sr.; Deacons: R.G. Buettner, Fred Schleif, Alfred Van de Zande, Wallace Krueger. (Mr. R.G. Buettner was treasurer of the Building Fund.)

Rev. Wernecke resigned in 1936 to accept a call from the Manitowoc, Wis., Reformed Church where he labored only till 1938 when his Lord called him home.

The Rev. John Mohr preached his first sermon on November, 1936, and remained until the Fall of 1949 when he answered a call at Marshalltown, Iowa. In the spring of 1939 the old parsonage was sold and in the fall, on November 26, 1939 the new and present parsonage was dedicated. The Elmore Reformed Church, actually the mother of the present congregation, was forced to dissolve this same year and the remaining 40 members joined the Campbellsport Congregation.

The present pastor, the Rev. Leonard Stockmeier, began ministering to the congregation of July, 1950, being graduated from Mission House Seminary in June of the same year.

Present officers of the church are: Elders, Erwin Rusch, Arthur Vohs, Richard Trapp; Deacons, Marvin Furlong, Lewis Schwandt.

[A note in Mr. Reese’s handwriting is at the bottom of the page: The cemeteries that are used for burial are Auburn and Union of Campbellsport, the Elmore at Elmore.]
