CONNECTING COMMUNITIES CREATING OPPORTUNITIES

PROJECT MILESTONES We are on track for revenue service on the Crenshaw LAX Transit Corridor to begin in Fall 2019, with major milestones being reached constantly along the 8.5- mile alignment. WSCC recently completed construction on the Project’s iconic bridge over the I-405 Freeway. This nearly 800-foot-long bridge crosses what is dubbed the busiest and most congested freeway in the United States, the I-405 freeway. In addition to the north and south lanes of the 405 freeway this impressive structure also spans, over La Cienega Blvd. and Hyde Park. We have also completed excavation and shoring of Underground Guideway #3 (UG3), a 4,215-foot-long reinforced concrete cut and cover tunnel located 30 feet below the surface of Crenshaw Blvd, running from Brynhurst Ave at the southern limit to 59th Street at the northern limit. WSCC crews spent over twelve months shoring and excavating for the cut and cover tunnel down the center of Crenshaw Blvd. Our crews installed approximately 8,000,000 lbs of steel soldier piles in the ground and excavated over 130,000 cubic yards of dirt.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES WSCC is proud to partner with community-based organizations like the Anti- Recidivism Coalition, Second Call, the Southwest Carpenter’s Training Fund’s Brother’s Keeper Program and the Los Angeles Urban League to create job opportunities for the community on the Crenshaw LAX Transit Corridor. One of our team members is Jason Thomas, who is fulfilling his boyhood dream of becoming an Operating Engineer. Jason imagined being an operating engineering since he was a young boy playing with Tonka trunks. But at 18, while a freshman at USC on a football scholarship, he committed a crime that resulted in a 23-year incarceration. The experience changed him, and today he strives to not just rebuild his community physically through the building trades, but socially by traveling with the Anti- Recidivism Coalition (ARC) throughout California to share his story of change and redemption with current inmates. The day after graduation his ARC graduation, he was interviewed by WSCC and was immediately sponsored into Operators Local 12 Don’t give up. Study your arithmetic and offered a full-time position—one year after completing his prison term.

“ and math. Above all that, be ready to work and work hard and show up Jason made the most of his second chance, and today is a team player, quick learner,

on time—which means at least 30 dependable, fearless and a natural problem solver. He embraces his responsibility minutes early! Nothing worth having “ to complete quality projects safely and on time. His advice to others with a criminal background seeking careers in construction: “Don’t give up. Study your arithmetic is easily attained. You’re going to fall and math. Above all that, be ready to work and work hard and show up on time— but it’s about how you get back up. which means at least 30 minutes early! Nothing worth having is easily attained. You’re going to fall but it’s about how you get back up.”

INVESTING IN THE COMMUNITY In keeping with our core values and reaffirming our commitment to being good neighbors in the community we are serving, WSCC has been actively working with local organizations to make a difference along Crenshaw Blvd. One way our team is helping make a difference is by supporting local efforts to maintain Crenshaw Blvd clear of debris. Over the past twelve months, WSCC has partnered with the Crenshaw Chamber of Commerce and the Coalition for Responsible Community Development to sponsor two cleanup crews composed of local community members tasked with the monthly removal of weeds and trash along Crenshaw Blvd. Since the inception of this program, the teams have removed over 20 tons of trash from Crenshaw Blvd! Armen Ross, President of the Crenshaw Chamber of Commerce: “Walsh Shea’s support has allowed us to launch a cleanup program that the Crenshaw Chamber of Commerce has wanted to start for years. We are now able to provide the cleanliness and standards that the Crenshaw community deserves.”
