CONFIRMATION 2012: Meetings for those wishing to be confirmed are now taking place on ongoing Saturday mornings at 10.30 am. This year’s Parish Confirmation is at Leeds Parish Church on Sunday 24 June at 10.30 when the Diocesan Bishop celebrates and presides. ROYAL SCHOOL OF CHURCH MUSIC: Evensong on Saturday 9 June at 4.00 will be sung by Diocesan Choirs and includes the presentation of Dean’s and Bishop’s Awards to successful candidates at the recent examinations held in Leeds and Harrogate. CALLING ALL HOLIDAY MAKERS: It’s by no means too early to be thinking of bringing a gift home from your holiday for the Rector’s Gift Stall at this year’s Christmas Gift Fair at Church on Saturday 24 November! Your help will be very gratefully appreciated. BATTLE OF THE ORGANS: The 2012 Battle takes place on Wednesday evening 13 June at 7.30 pm. We hope that all parishioners will give this popular concert their support. Admission is free and the retiring collection will, once again, be in aid of Bridging the Gap. The programme looks immensely appetising, including as it does such golden oldies as Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, The Last Sleep of the Virgin by Massenet, Grainger’s Handel in the Strand, the Processional from Pines of Rome and, at the close of the evening, the singing of Parry’s Jerusalem by all present. Also programmed is Edward Marsh’s stupendous arrangement of the Thunderbirds March and Toch’s hilarious Geographical Fugue rendered by the organists. There’s also repertoire by Verdi, Nevin, Hollins, Whitlock and Vierne among others. ANNUAL SERVICE AT ST JOHN’S BRIGGATE: This year, Choral Evensong at St John’s is on Wednesday 20 June at 6.00 and all are warmly welcome to attend. Please put the date in your diary now and let your friends know about it! SPECIAL WEEKEND EVENTS IN JULY: On Saturday 7 July, at 3.15, Dr Lindley presents reminiscence and recollection entitled Places where they sing and on the following Saturday, 14 July, there will a further Fun Day for all at the Parish Church in the afternoon between 2.00 and 5.00 pm. Both occasions are in aid of Church Funds. THE LORD MAYOR: Congratulations to the incoming Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Ann Castle, whose year of office was inaugurated on Monday 21 May. Councillor Castle takes over from Councillor The Reverend Canon Alan Taylor, whose year of office has now ended. Councillor Taylor writes: It has been a great honour to represent the city as Lord Mayor over the last twelve months. The people of Leeds have been extremely kind to me during my term and have helped to raise a substantial amount of money for my chosen charity Voluntary Action Leeds. It has been fantastic to have such an important role in my last year, as a councillor and as Lord Mayor. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I wish Ann all the very best for her year as Lord Mayor. Looking back over the sixty years of her reign, there have been massive social changes, amazing events and progress in our world, as well as the many, many memories held by us all. One of the most significant aspects, though, can be linked particularly to our Christian faith at this time of the Christian year. The ‘Gifts of the Spirit’ at Pentecost are love, happiness, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control and faithfulness.

    Headingley Development Trust Promoting Headingley A Headline History of Headingley Headingley Village The beginnings of Headingley village are lost in the mists of time. But its situation in a prime location suggests that it might be very ancient. The village is located on the higher, drier ridge between what would have been the less hospitable valleys of the River Aire to the west and Meanwood Beck to the east. And it is in a saddle on the ridge, providing ready access between the valleys. [An off-set cross-roads is still central to Headingley.] The Anglo-Saxon Era During the sixth century, the Angles arrived, settling in the north, giving England its name – and also naming the village. Among their number were Headda and his family, who founded, or perhaps occupied, the settlement on the hill, which became known as ‘Headda’s people’s place’ – or ‘Head-ing-ley’. Under Headda’s descendants, the village evidently flourished. [One field remains, on Headingley Hill, now used for grazing.] The Viking Era The Vikings colonised the north in the ninth century, and Jorvik Scir (York Shire) became one of the fourteen shires of the Danelaw. The Shire was divided into Ridings (thirdings), each in turn comprising wapentakes (where votes were taken by a show of weapons). The West Riding included Skyrack Wapentake, extending from the Wharfe to the Aire, and named after the Scir Ac (or Shire Oak) meeting place on the edge of Headingley village green. So, a millennium ago, Headingley was the number one settlement in Skyrack Wapentake. [The oak stood for another thousand years, finally collapsing in 1941.] The Norman Era The north did not take kindly to William of Normandy’s conquest in 1066, and rebellion broke out.

    Surveying the administrative boundaries of Lancashire and Yorkshire after the 1841 Ordnance Survey Act John L Cruickshank In Sheetlines 91 Richard Oliver showed (once more) that the commonly asserted obligation on the OS under the 1841 Ordnance Survey Act to record public boundaries is complete bunkum.1 In so doing he has slaughtered a sacred cow that had lived far too long. His article is welcome indeed. One simply hopes the cow stays dead! However, perhaps because of his desire to achieve clarity, and also because he wished to focus on the mapping of tidelines, he has understated some of the legal difficulties inherent in a boundary survey carried out under the provisions of the 1841 Act. He has also glossed over the complexity of the situation encountered by the Ordnance surveyors when they first set to work recording administrative boundaries on the six-inch survey of Lancashire and Yorkshire. Richard does point out that while the 1825 Acts for the Irish survey had enacted that the various boundaries recorded there would thenceforth be the legal boundaries, the 1841 Act for the survey of Great Britain did not give the boundaries recorded by the OS any legal status. He did not however emphasise that the OS was explicitly not authorised to settle the position of any disputed or uncertain boundary.2 Furthermore Richard mentions that from 1849 the OS established a separate department for boundary work in England located in London where it was able to use the tithe surveys of 1836-1850. He also subsequently mentions the campaign for the rationalisation of administrative boundaries during the 1870s and 1880s and the fact that the OS at that time worked closely with the Local Government Board both to ensure that rationalisations took place before the OS carried out large-scale surveys, and to ensure that the OS did not attempt to record the full complexity of administrative boundaries as they existed before legislation of 1876.
