This is your chance to get involved in making local birth, marriage and death records available on the internet. Atlantics Geomatics, a local surveying and mapping company, is pioneering the development of a system to digitise the parish records and map the graveyard. Once completed this will provide a live source of information which will be easy to access. The company will map the graveyard using multiple photographs from drones as well as GPS and traditional surveying techniques and will plot all features of the area; they will photograph the headstones and will make digital copies of the registers. All the information will be cross referenced on a database set up by the company. This where the community involvement comes in. You can volunteer to be in right at the beginning of this project, inputting data, cross referencing records, or checking the information before it is published. It is hoped that a group will be established to meet together to make this valuable asset available to the local and wider community. The cost will be around £1500 to set up the scheme, and the annual running costs will be about £200. Dacre Church will help to finance the project but further sponsorship from individuals or businesses will be deeply appreciated. If you are interested in either helping with the database or with sponsorship, please ring Sue & Steve Huddart, on 01768483082 or email [email protected] Blencowe and Laithes Village Hall ● May 7th - We have a Pie and Pea Supper with a Beetle Drive 7pm - tickets £8/£6veggie/£5 under 16, in advance from Nick 01768 483864, Sue 01768 The Clickham Inn is now open 12- 483111, Susan 01768 480629 or Keith 11pm daily, with food served all day 077607753300 from 12-8.30pm ● June 11th - Celebrate The Queens 90th Birthday - Come along and try our Special menu. International Dawn Chorus Day Songbird Tour Visitors to Dalemain cannot quite believe their eyes when little wild birds, totally fearless, alight on the hand of the Bird Man of Dalemain Mr Jimmy Day. When he walks about a cloud of them are always following, or sitting up in the trees waiting for that ‘tell tale’ whistle when his hand dives into his pocket for the little titbits. Jimmy is the retired game keeper, who celebrated his 81st birthday this year and has lived at Dalemain in the courtyard for 40 years. Inspired by Jimmy and his love of birds, the songbird tour will take place in Dalemain’s beautiful Historic Gardens with our expert on birdsong, Raymond Clark. The garden has hundreds of songbirds and the mornings are a positive polyphony of twitter and tweet as the real tweeting in this world begins! The tour will begin at 4.30am, when dawn breaks, and will take approximately 1 hour. All proceeds will go to the Songbird Trust. Farmwatch and Sheep initiative In a sheep theft initiative, police in Eden are being trained to recognize suspicious stock movements as a result in high value sheep thefts in the area. With values of stock stolen varying between £4000 to £48000, this is a serious issue for farmers in the Eden area and police are responding appropriately. The organised nature of the thefts, for either movement onto breeding or the food chain, means that police are working with colleagues from the farming community, NFU, the Food Standards Agency, Trading Standards and the Vehicle and Operators Services Agency (VOSA) to increase the controls on stock movements across Cumbria. Behind the scenes, processes to pass on stock identification numbers to possible places of disposal, such as abattoirs, are being speeded up so that police can have stock numbers circulated within 24 hours of the theft being reported. Farmers are asked to keep good records, and be ready to pass on all identification numbers at the time of reporting any thefts to assist with this process. Any questions on the sheep theft initiative can be directed to PCSO Karen Dakin, PCSO Janet Allinson or Sergeant Mike James. Editor’s note - Recently a Stainton resident reported a suspicious vehicle to the Police, as 5 young people were in the car, with 2 of them getting out and walking the area. The Police sent vans out to investigate. Please alert your neighbours, especially any vulnerable residents, to be aware and 14 to report any incidents, and to ensure properties and valuables are kept secure.
