We hope that this handbook will inform you of the way in which we fulfil our responsibilities as educators and how we look after the children in our care. Skelmorlie Primary is a small rural school in the village of Skelmorlie in the North Ayrshire coast. Our school has a particularly warm and friendly ethos and a nurturing environment for learning. We aim to provide opportunities for all children to attain and achieve their full potential and children are encouraged to develop positive attitudes towards their learning and a caring attitude towards themselves, others and our local and global environment. Our school is at the heart of the local community and we take great pride in supporting community events. We have a highly dedicated team of staff who are there to support our children academically, emotionally and socially within a safe and caring environment. All pupils and staff have a mutual respect for one another. Skelmorlie Primary has an active Parent Council who are extremely supportive and contribute to the working life of the school. They warmly welcome new parents. Prospective new parents and children are welcome to visit our school to experience the warm atmosphere and view our facilities. However, this may have restrictions due to Covid-19 and may have to be organised out with the school day. Covid-19 has impacted on some of our school routines and procedures. It has also affected pupil committees and after school clubs. However, we hope to be up and running with all of these activities when Covid-19 restrictions are eased. I have included all of this information below. I look forward to welcoming you into our school where we can work in partnership to provide the best possible education for your children. Kind Regards, Lynn Currie 4 Communities Directorate (Education Services) What we want to achieve Our Overall Aim Ensuring our children and young people experience the best start in life. A number of security measures are used including the use of a visitors’ book, badges and escorts while visitors are within the school building. Any parent/carer or visitor at a school for any reason will be asked to report to the school office. The school staff will then make any necessary arrangements in connection with the visit to the school. It is the policy of the school that any member of staff will approach a visitor and ask for verification of identity. This measure ensures that children work in a safe and protected environment. We appreciate your support in carrying out all of the above measures. Positive Relationships The school is committed to developing a nurturing approach and promoting positive relationships. Like every community, our school is built on the relationships within it, across it and its connections with others. Every member of staff is responsible for establishing and maintaining positive relationships with each other, with parents and with partners and most importantly with the young people in their care. Our expectations of behaviour for children and young people are high. Some children
